This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 403 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Social and Cultural Construction of Risk: Issues, Methods, and Case Studies Vincent T. Covello and Branden B. Johnson Risks to health, safety, and the environment abound in the world and people cope as best they can. But before action can be taken to control, reduce, or eliminate these risks, decisions must be made about which risks are important and which risks can safely be ignored. The challenge for decision makers is that consensus on these matters is often lacking. Risks believed by some individuals and groups to be tolerable or accept able - such as the risks of nuclear power or industrial pollutants - are intolerable and unacceptable to others. This book addresses this issue by exploring how particular technological risks come to be selected for societal attention and action. Each section of the volume examines, from a different perspective, how individuals, groups, communities, and societies decide what is risky, how risky it is, and what should be done. The writing of this book was inspired by another book: Risk and Culture: An Essay on the Selection of Technoloqical and Environmental Dangers. Published in 1982 and written by two distinguished scholars - Mary Douglas, a British social anthropologist, and Aaron Wildavsky, an American political scientist - the book received wide critical attention and offered several provocative ideas on the nature of risk selection, perception, and acceptance.

Book Synopsis Teaching the Writing Process in High School by :
Download or read book Teaching the Writing Process in High School written by and published by . This book was released on 1995 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book, part of a series which serve as guides for K-12 teachers who are striving to align lively, classroom-tested practices with standards, gathers together brief articles spotlighting suggestions for effective instruction. Beginning with activities that help students think through the audience and purpose for their writing, this book offers a wide range of classroom experiences that take students through pre-writing and drafting, peer editing and self-editing, and revision. Throughout the book the emphasis is on the classroom as a writing community and the student as an increasingly skilled and confident writer. The organization of the book aims to provide a strong conception of teaching the writing process and some useful pathways for appropriate classroom practice--an underlying assumption is that writing process instruction is a teaching model that makes use of the understanding of how real-world composing occurs. Book Synopsis The Manufactured Crisis by : David C. Berliner
Download or read book The Manufactured Crisis written by David C. Berliner and published by Longman Publishing Group. This book was released on 1997 with total page 436 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the past decade a rising chorus of critics - from William Bennett to Allan Bloom - has decried the supposedly dire state of our public schools. Kids aren't learning what they should, violence and chaos reign in the classroom, and bureaucracy strangles attempts at reform. But how much of that grim image is really true? In The Manufactured Crisis, two prominent scholars, prize-winning educational psychologist David C. Berliner and leading social psychologist Bruce J. Biddle, fight back with the good news. They debunk a whole series of familiar but untrue statistics about public schools - that SAT scores have been dropping, when for many groups they are in fact rising; that illiteracy is up, when in fact the numbers have been skewed because schools are now educating the traditionally disenfranchised in ever larger numbers; that investments in public education do not pay off when, in fact, they lead to greater student achievements and life earnings; that private schools are inherently better than public schools when, in fact, the evidence does not support this charge. Berliner and Biddle tear through these and other sensational myths to give the reader an honest look at public education in America and the misguided, often tragic proposals that critics have urged for correcting these fictive problems. In addition, they expose and offer solutions to the real problems American public schools face today, schools that continue to provide an increasingly diverse citizenry with the opportunity to better their lives.

Book Synopsis The Grace of Ars by : Frederick L. Miller
Download or read book The Grace of Ars written by Frederick L. Miller and published by Ignatius Press. This book was released on 2010 with total page 237 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: St. John Vianney, the famous Cure of Ars, is the patron saint of all parish priests. Interest in this great saint is always high, but even more because Pope Benedict XVI declared the Year of the Priest and held up John Vianney as the role model for this special year to honor the priesthood. Father Miller has taken many groups of priests and seminarians on pilgrimage to Ars, France, and there he has preached retreats on the life and ministry of Saint John Vianney. This work is based on his many years of personal experience at Ars, and the impact he has seen that the holy Cure has made on those who go there and learn from his inspiring life and work. These beautiful reflections focus on various aspects of the life of Vianney and the way he lived out his priesthood in the aftermath of the French Revolution - a very difficult time for Catholic priests in France. This book reveals that specific Grace of Ars - the unique movement of God that drew hundreds of thousands of people to Ars during his life there to receive the sacrament of reconciliation from Vianney and find peace with God and neighbor. The book will help anyone make a pilgrimage to the very place where St. John Vianney labored so long and so heroically for the good of souls and the love of God - and often in direct battle with Satan. The reader will have the experience of making a retreat in the presence of the saintly Cure, and be able to ponder the Grace of Ars, and especially what he has to say to Priests of the 21st century - another difficult time for those who seek to be faithful to their promises to God and build up the Church of Christ. This work will strengthen priests and seminarians in their vocations and help young men hear the call of Christ to follow him as priests. Laymen will find in this reflection on St. John Vianney a model parish priest who will inspire all to love the priesthood and pray for the sanctification of all priests, and through his holy example the Cure of Ars will help all understand that the priesthood is the love of the Heart of Jesus.

Book Synopsis The Writing Process in Action by : Jackie Proett
Download or read book The Writing Process in Action written by Jackie Proett and published by . This book was released on 1986 with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Intended for English teachers early in their careers and for teachers retraining to teach English, and applicable to English/language arts classrooms across all grade levels, this guide offers practices drawn from classroom experience and from writing project experience that implement a tenable, successful theory of learning to write. The introductory section to the guidebook discusses traditional theories about how students learn to write, writing as a process and as rhetorical choice, and the multiple functions of writing, and lists the premises about writing instruction upon which this manual is based. The first section focuses on prewriting activities such as logs, brainstorming, outlining, and oral activities; while activities in the second section concern various aspects of the writing process, including fluency and decision-making in writing, choices of rhetorical stance and content, and organizational patterns. The activities in the third section center on revision, proofreading, and evaluation after writing; while those in the fourth section present ways to highlight student writing to give classroom writing a realism usually lacking. Activities presented in the fifth section stress writing to learn in the content areas, and include writing to learn and writing to test learning. The last section of the guidebook is a source file for teachers and includes variations on book reports, composition activities, sample editing and response forms, journal starters, and framing patterns.
