The benefits accrued by these nations through shipbuilding have been summarised. Productivity measurement in shipbuilding has been examined and the problems with the current system have been highlighted, along with solutions. This book suggests the usage of Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA), a mathematical linear programming technique, as an appropriate tool to measure total productivity as well as profitability. The various ways of improving profitability in shipbuilding, by way of cost-cutting techniques, along with some Indian case studies have been explained in the book. Keeping the ‘Indian Maritime Agenda 2010-2020’ vision document in the backdrop, a strategic appreciation of the Indian shipbuilding industry has been undertaken using the SWOT, the Matrix and the Scenario analyses. Based on these analyses, strategies have been formulated for all the stakeholders who can influence the Indian shipbuilding industry. Thirukkural perhaps was a fitting reply to a host of conflicting and competing views that existed in Tamil speaking countries of the period on the right way of living, family, religion and governance, supported by various religions that reached the Tamil soil as well as those of indigenous ones and by philosophers who accompanied traders from far off countries. But unfortunately Thiruvalluvar himself did not give interpretation to his tersest couplets. The interpretations presented in 13nth century and earlier, in spite of the noble intention and extraordinary scholarship of the interpreters, I am afraid, understated its universality. Several centuries later, claims and counterclaims were made by the proponents of different religions including Christianity and the latest from atheists. I tried to remove the guise and achieved considerable success in this attempt. Fresh interpretations, which I believe truthfully reflect the thought of Thiruvalluvar, are provided in this book for nearly 360 couplets out of 1330 couplets. This conviction stems from my fresh look at Thirukkural that successfully shed away all the contradictions and unacceptable and unviable constructs it had to live with through the earlier interpretation(s). Thirukkural consists of 133 chapters with 10 couplets in each chapter. Each chapter is a life skill coaching material. They show how to live a soul-evolving life in the three arenas namely family, work and love. Business ethics can be both a normative and a descriptive discipline. As a corporate practice and a career specialisation, the field is primarily normative. In academia descriptive approaches are also taken. The range and quantity of business ethical issues reflects the degree to which business is perceived to be at odds with non-economic social values. Historically, interest in business ethics accelerated dramatically during the 1980s and 1990s, both within major corporations and within academia. For example, today most major corporate websites lay emphasis on commitment to promoting non-economic social values under a variety of headings (e.g. ethics codes, social responsibility charters). In some cases, corporations have redefined their core values in the light of business ethical considerations. Catching business ethics in action, however, remains a seldom-spotted nugget for in reality it depends on the characters of the characters.
