Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the story of the Threat Assessment indicating United States Vulnerability to Surprise Atomic Attack-that was believed and acted- upon. (As contrasted to Assessments which were ignored with serious consequences-- like the Rudman Commission and Gilmore Panel in late 1990's, and in the Pacific just prior to Dec.7,1941). This Story is the "inside" perspective of the unlikely chain of events which led to the Inquiry being authorized, and then conducted. It postulates why its unsettling findings were accepted as credible and valid. It describes how the findings were utilized as the basis for the massive efforts to eliminate this Vulnerability.-ie.that the United States's System for deterring Nuclear World War III--(SAC)-- could be attacked by complete Surprise, and destroyed on the ground by the Soviet long-range Bomber force. Finally the Book speculates as to how the Inquiry helped end the Cold War-withoutNuclear detonations by either side.

Book excerpt: Despite the vital importance of the emerging area of biotechnology and its role in defense planning and policymaking, no definitive book has been written on the topic for the defense policymaker, the military student, and the private-sector bioscientist interested in the "emerging opportunities market" of national security. This edited volume is intended to help close this gap and provide the necessary backdrop for thinking strategically about biology in defense planning and policymaking. This volume is about applications of the biological sciences, here called "biologically inspired innovations," to the military. Rather than treating biology as a series of threats to be dealt with, such innovations generally approach the biological sciences as a set of opportunities for the military to gain strategic advantage over adversaries. These opportunities range from looking at everything from genes to brains, from enhancing human performance to creating renewable energy, from sensing the environment around us to harnessing its power.

Book excerpt: This book is designed as both a reference and a handbook for the study of fishes. It is a source of methods commonly used to research fish genetics, systematics, anatomy, physiology, developmental biology, toxicology, behavior, and ecology. Standard methods and their theoretical framework are presented for all these fields. Each of the book's 20 chapters also contains a background literature review which, though not exhaustive, allows readers to delve more deeply into subjects that particularly interest them. The main emphasis is on methodology, but the pros and cons of alternative procedures also are treated, as are the uses and misuses of data generated by the techniques.

Book excerpt: Following from Fish for Life – Interactive Governance for Fisheries (Kooiman et al., 2005), which presents an interdisciplinary and intersectoral approach to the governance of capture and aquaculture fisheries, this volume pursues what interactive governance theory and the governability perspective contribute to the resolution of key fisheries problems, these include overfishing, unemployment and poverty, food insecurity, and social injustice. Since these problems are varied and can be felt among governments, resource users and communities globally, the diagnosis must be holistic, and take account of principles, institutions, and operational conditions. The authors argue that ‘wicked problems’ and institutional limitations are inherent to each setting, and must be included in the analysis. The volume thereby offers a new lens and a systematic approach for analysing the nature of problems and challenges concerning the governance of fisheries, explores where these problems are situated, and how potential solutions may be found. ”It now seems clear that the crisis in the world’s fisheries [is] a much larger and more complex problem than many had imagined. Yet, examining it through the lens of governability may offer the best hope for alleviating it--as well as alleviating similar crises in other social systems.” James R. McGoodwin (Professor Emeritus, University of Colorado)

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The goal of the book Fish Biology and Fisheries is to help integrate the study of fish biology with the study of fisheries. One might not expect these two subjects to need further integration. However, strong declines in many fish stocks around the world, combined with growing concerns about the impact of fisheries on marine and freshwater biodiversity, are raising new questions about aspects of fish biology that have traditionally dwelt outside mainstream fisheries research. Fisheries form an important sector of the country's economy in terms of food supply, employment, income and foreign exchange earnings. Fishes are one of the important sources of cheap protein food for the people and millions of fishermen and several industries depend on this source. Lack of a comprehensive treatise on the biology of fishes has prompted this humble piece of work leading to Essentials of Fish Biology. A wide coverage of fish biology will make it of interest not only to ichthyologist but to professional fishery biologist as well desiring to learn basic structure and function of fish body in daily life of the fish. This is an ideal textbook of fish biology which will serve as valuable work for undergraduates and graduates looking for a comprehensive source on a wide variety of topics in fish Biology and Fisheries.

Book excerpt: Climate change has emerged as the most pressing global challenge of the 21st century and it has a dramatic effect on natural ecosystems and environment. Intelligent mitigation strategies to minimise climate change impacts can result in advanced, novel technologies; healthier aquatic ecosystems and higher food security and well-being for humans. The book includes 45 Chapters by expert authors, covering (i) Hydrometeorology and hydrology, (ii) Natural hazards and disaster risk management, (iii) Aquaculture, (iv) Changing biodiversity scenarios, (v) Capture fisheries, (vi) Food and nutritional insecurity, (vii) Climate change and socio-economic scenarios, and allied areas. It is hoped that this volume will further our understanding and research achievements in the field of climate change and its consequences and facilitate the synthesis of information on how climate-related changes will influence oceans, marine and inland ecosystems, hydrological cycles, fisheries and aquaculture and coastal communities and will be immensely useful to planners, scientists, conservationists, environmentalists, academicians, students and all those who are directly or indirectly involved in the study of impact of climate change and mitigation measures Note: T& F does not sell or distribute the Hardback in India, Pakistan, Nepal, Bhutan, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hawaii’s forest bird community is the most insular and most endangered in the world and serves as a case study for threatened species globally. Ten have disappeared in the past thirty years, nine are critically endangered, and even common species are currently in decline. Thane K. Pratt, his coeditors, and collaborators, all leaders in their field, describe the research and conservation efforts over the past thirty years to save Hawaii’s forest birds. They also offer the most comprehensive look at the reasons for these extinctions and attempts to overcome them in the future. Among the topics covered in this book are trends in bird populations, environmental and genetic factors limiting population size, avian diseases, predators, and competing alien bird species. Color plates by award-winning local photographer Jack Jeffrey illustrate all living species discussed or described.
