Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Using data on mergers and acquisitions involving Korean firms, the authors identify which sectors and firms attracted foreign investment after the liberalization of investment of activity at the end of 1997. They find that domestic acquisitions are similar to foreign acquisitions by sector (of both the target and the acquiring firm), but that international transactions are larger than Korean transactions. This suggests that consolidation is a two-stage process: Firms consolidate first domestically, then internationally. The authors also find that foreign investment is focused on high-value-added sectors, on larger and more profitable firms, on firms with low debt, and on firms that export a large share of output. Their results suggest that growth induces foreign investment.

Book excerpt: Evidence from Central America's publicly owned and managed water supply companies indicates that the urban poor are ill served by current subsidy policies. The best way to improve water services for the urban poor, this study concludes, is for tariffs to reflect system costs and for consumption to be metered. This permits each household to determine how much it wants to spend on water while ensuring sustainability of services across the network. The attitudes of poor communities toward metering are generally positive.

Book Synopsis Developing a Sustainable Economy in Cameroon by : Aloysius Ajab Amin
Download or read book Developing a Sustainable Economy in Cameroon written by Aloysius Ajab Amin and published by African Books Collective. This book was released on 2008 with total page 439 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Developing a Sustainable Economy in Cameroon is an ambitious effort as the authors try to set a blue print for Cameroon's economy. In the 1980s facing economic crisis, and as dictated by the structural adjustment programme, Cameroon sharply cut public investment expenditures before later cutting government consumption which were followed by privatisation, liquidation of public companies and reduction in the size of the public sector. All these measures are believed to have had devastating effects on the economy. Given the performance of the economy so far the authors suggest that much more effort, with a strong commitment of the main stakeholders, is required to guarantee sustainable economic development in Cameroon. Truly, very few countries in Africa possess such enormous human and natural resources as Cameroon does. This volume brings out the challenges Cameroon faces in its quest for development as well as for designing appropriate strategies for addressing those development challenges.
