Book excerpt: Conformal antenna arrays offer many cost and weight advantages over conventional antenna systems. In the past, antenna designers have had to resort to expensive measurements in order to develop a conformal array design. This is due to the lack of rigorous mathematical models for conformal antenna arrays, and as a result the design of conformal arrays is primarily based on planar antenna design concepts. Recently, we have found the finite element-boundary integral method to be very successful in modeling large planar arrays of arbitrary composition in a metallic plane. Herewith we shall extend this formulation for conformal arrays on large metallic cylinders. In this we develop the mathematical formulation. In particular we discuss the finite element equations, the shape elements, and the boundary integral evaluation, and it is shown how this formulation can be applied with minimal computation and memory requirements. The implementation shall be discussed in a later report. Kempel, Leo C. and Volakis, John L. and Woo, Alex C. and Yu, C. Long Unspecified Center NCA2-543...

Book excerpt: Conformal antenna arrays offer many cost and weight advantages over conventional antenna systems. However, due to a lack of rigorous mathematical models for conformal antenna arrays, antenna designers resort to measurement and planar antenna concepts for designing non-planar conformal antennas. Recently, we have found the finite element-boundary integral method to be very successful in modeling large planar arrays of arbitrary composition in a metallic plane. We extend this formulation to conformal arrays on large metallic cylinders. In this report, we develop the mathematical formulation. In particular, we discuss the shape functions, the resulting finite elements and the boundary integral equations, and the solution of the conformal finite element-boundary integral system. Some validation results are presented and we further show how this formulation can be applied with minimal computational and memory resources. Kempel, Leo C. and Volakis, John L. Download or read book Handbook of Conformal Mappings and Applications written by Prem K. Kythe and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2019-03-04 with total page 663 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The subject of conformal mappings is a major part of geometric function theory that gained prominence after the publication of the Riemann mapping theorem — for every simply connected domain of the extended complex plane there is a univalent and meromorphic function that maps such a domain conformally onto the unit disk. The Handbook of Conformal Mappings and Applications is a compendium of at least all known conformal maps to date, with diagrams and description, and all possible applications in different scientific disciplines, such as: fluid flows, heat transfer, acoustics, electromagnetic fields as static fields in electricity and magnetism, various mathematical models and methods, including solutions of certain integral equations.

Book Synopsis Frequency Domain Hybrid Finite Element Methods in Electromagnetics by : John L. Volakis
Download or read book Frequency Domain Hybrid Finite Element Methods in Electromagnetics written by John L. Volakis and published by Morgan & Claypool Publishers. This book was released on 2006-12-01 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a brief overview of the popular Finite Element Method (FEM) and its hybrid versions for electromagnetics with applications to radar scattering, antennas and arrays, guided structures, microwave components, frequency selective surfaces, periodic media, and RF materials characterizations and related topics. It starts by presenting concepts based on Hilbert and Sobolev spaces as well as Curl and Divergence spaces for generating matrices, useful in all engineering simulation methods. It then proceeds to present applications of the finite element and finite element-boundary integral methods for scattering and radiation. Applications to periodic media, metamaterials and bandgap structures are also included. The hybrid volume integral equation method for high contrast dielectrics and is presented for the first time. Another unique feature of the book is the inclusion of design optimization techniques and their integration within commercial numerical analysis packages for shape and material design. To aid the reader with the method's utility, an entire chapter is devoted to two-dimensional problems. The book can be considered as an update on the latest developments since the publication of our earlier book (Finite Element Method for Electromagnetics, IEEE Press, 1998). The latter is certainly complementary companion to this one.
Book Synopsis Genetic Algorithms in Electromagnetics by : Randy L. Haupt
Download or read book Genetic Algorithms in Electromagnetics written by Randy L. Haupt and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2007-04-27 with total page 317 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A thorough and insightful introduction to using genetic algorithms to optimize electromagnetic systems Genetic Algorithms in Electromagnetics focuses on optimizing the objective function when a computer algorithm, analytical model, or experimental result describes the performance of an electromagnetic system. It offers expert guidance to optimizing electromagnetic systems using genetic algorithms (GA), which have proven to be tenacious in finding optimal results where traditional techniques fail. Genetic Algorithms in Electromagnetics begins with an introduction to optimization and several commonly used numerical optimization routines, and goes on to feature: Introductions to GA in both binary and continuous variable forms, complete with examples of MATLAB(r) commands Two step-by-step examples of optimizing antenna arrays as well as a comprehensive overview of applications of GA to antenna array design problems Coverage of GA as an adaptive algorithm, including adaptive and smart arrays as well as adaptive reflectors and crossed dipoles Explanations of the optimization of several different wire antennas, starting with the famous "crooked monopole" How to optimize horn, reflector, and microstrip patch antennas, which require significantly more computing power than wire antennas Coverage of GA optimization of scattering, including scattering from frequency selective surfaces and electromagnetic band gap materials Ideas on operator and parameter selection for a GA Detailed explanations of particle swarm optimization and multiple objective optimization An appendix of MATLAB code for experimentation

Book Synopsis Finite Element Method Electromagnetics by : John L. Volakis
Download or read book Finite Element Method Electromagnetics written by John L. Volakis and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 1998-06-15 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Employed in a large number of commercial electromagnetic simulation packages, the finite element method is one of the most popular and well-established numerical techniques in engineering. This book covers the theory, development, implementation, and application of the finite element method and its hybrid versions to electromagnetics. FINITE ELEMENT METHOD FOR ELECTROMAGNETICS begins with a step-by-step textbook presentation of the finite method and its variations then goes on to provide up-to-date coverage of three dimensional formulations and modern applications to open and closed domain problems. Worked out examples are included to aid the reader with the fine features of the method and the implementation of its hybridization with other techniques for a robust simulation of large scale radiation and scattering. The crucial treatment of local boundary conditions is carefully worked out in several stages in the book. Sponsored by: IEEE Antennas and Propagation Society.
