Book Synopsis Reforming the Scottish Parish by : John McCallum
Download or read book Reforming the Scottish Parish written by John McCallum and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-04-08 with total page 287 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Protestant Reformation of 1560 is widely acknowledged as being a watershed moment in Scottish history. However, whilst the antecedents of the reform movement have been widely explored, the actual process of establishing a reformed church in the parishes in the decades following 1560 has been largely ignored. This book helps remedy the situation by examining the foundation of the reformed church and the impact of Protestant discipline in the parishes of Fife. In early modern Scotland, Fife was both a distinct and important region, containing a preponderance of coastal burghs as well as St Andrews, the ecclesiastical capital of medieval Scotland. It also contained many rural and inland parishes, making it an ideal case study for analysing the course of religious reform in diverse communities. Nevertheless, the focus is on the Reformation, rather than on the county, and the book consistently places Fife's experience in the wider Scottish, British and European context. Based on a wide range of under-utilised sources, especially kirk session minutes, the study's focus is on the grass-roots religious life of the parish, rather than the more familiar themes of church politics and theology. It evaluates the success of the reformers in affecting both institutional and ideological change, and provides a detailed account of the workings of the reformed church, and its impact on ordinary people. In so doing it addresses important questions regarding the timescale and geographical patterns of reform, and how such dramatic religious change succeeded and endured without violence, or indeed, widespread opposition.

DISTRICT OF ST ANDREWS. PARISH OF ST ANDREWS. I. The parish of St Andrews, occupies the central portion of the east coast of the county, lying south-east of the estuary of the Eden, and between it and the parish of Kingsbarns. It is about 8 miles in length, from its south-east to its north-west extremity. The south-eastern part of the parish is only 2 miles in breadth from east to west; but towards the north-west, its breadth is increased to 4 miles. It is said altogether to contain an area of about 17 or 18 square miles. On the south it is bounded by the parishes of Ceres, Cameron, Denino, St Leonards, and Kingsbarns; on the east by the bay of St Andrews--a portion of the German ocean; on the north by the estuary of the Eden, which divides it from the parish of Leuchars; and on the west by the parishes of Leuchars and Kemback. The parish contains 21 miles 736 yards of turnpike roads, and six miles 472 yards of statute labour roads. Besides the city of St Andrews and its suburbs, there are three villages in the parish, Boarhills near the south-eastern boundary, Strathkinnes about 2 miles north-west of the city, and Kincaple north of Strathkinnes, and near the Eden. Of these Strathkinnes is the largest, containing a population of about 500. Along the estuary of the Eden, on the north-western division of the parish, the land is low and flat, a part of which is in tillage, though the larger portion forms links or downs, which afford pasture for sheep, and are also useful as a place of pleasant recreation for the inhabitants of the city. From the point at the mouth of the Eden to Kenly-burn, which divides the parish from Kingsbarns, there are about six miles of sea coast. Of this there are about two miles to the...

Download or read book Fife written by John Gifford and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2003-01-01 with total page 550 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fife's most famous buildings include Dunfermline Abbey, with its sturdy Norman nave; St Andrews cathedral, the focus of the old University town on the North Sea coast; the foursquare post-Reformation kirk at Burntisland; the palace of Falkland, where James V became Britain's first patron of Renaissance architecture on the grand scale; and the little royal burghs along the coastal fringe, each with its harbour and its strings of vernacular houses presided over by the kirk and tollbooth. Cupar, at the centre of Fife's long peninsula, is the seat of local government and one of the most charming and prosperous of Scottish towns. Less well known are Fife's tower houses like Scotstarvit, the old seaboard castles of St Andrews and Ravenscraig, the picturesque Balgonie Castle and the thoroughly domesticated Kellie Castle. Of Fife's churches one of the most beautiful is Dairsie; and three centuries of inventive design in burial monuments come to an unexpected climax in a work by Charles Rennie Mackintosh in the MacDuff cemetery, East Wemyss.
