Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the last four decades, tremendous advances have been made towards the understanding of transport characteristics of contaminants in soils, solutes, and tracers in geological media. Transport & Fate of Chemicals in Soils: Principles & Applications offers a comprehensive treatment of the subject complete with supporting examples of mathematical models that describe contaminants reactivity and transport in soils and aquifers. This approach makes it a practical guide for designing experiments and collecting data that focus on characterizing retention as well as release kinetic reactions in soils and contaminant transport experiments in the laboratory, greenhouse), and in the field. The book provides the basic framework of the principals governing the sorption and transport of chemicalsin soils. It focuses on physical processes such as fractured media, multiregion, multiple porosities, and heterogeneity and effect of scale as well as chemical processes such as nonlinear kinetics, release and desorption hysteresis, multisite and multireaction reactions, and competitive-type reactions. The coverage also includes details of sorption behavior of chemicals with soil matrix surfaces as well the integration of sorption characteristics with mechanisms that govern solute transport in soils. The discussions of applications of the principles of sorption and transport are not restricted to contaminants, but also include nitrogen, phosphorus, and trace elements including essential micronutrients, heavy metals, military explosives, pesticides, and radionuclides. Written in a very clear and easy-to-follow language by a pioneer in soil science, this book details the basic framework of the physical and chemical processes governing the transport of contaminants, trace elements, and heavy metals in soils. Highly practical, it includes laboratory methods, examples, and empirical formulations. The approach taken by the author gives you not only the fundamentals of understanding of reactive chemicals retention and their transport in soils and aquifers, but practical guidance you can put to immediate use in designing experiments and collecting data.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Modeling Chemical Transport in Soils: Natural and Applied Contaminants provides a comprehensive discussion of mathematical models used to anticipate and predict the consequences and fate of natural and applied chemicals. The book evaluates the strengths, weaknesses, and possibilities for application of numerous models used throughout the world. It examines the theoretical support and need for experimental calibration for each model. The book also reviews world literature to discuss such topics as the movement of sorbed chemicals by soil erosion, the movement of reactive and nonreactive chemicals in the subsurface and groundwater, and salt transport in the landscape. Modeling Chemical Transport in Soils: Natural and Applied Contaminants is an important volume for environmental scientists, agricultural engineers, regulatory personnel, farm managers, consultants, and the chemical industry.

Book excerpt: This publication comes with computer software and presents a comprehensive simulation model designed to predict the hydrologic response, including potential for surface and groundwater contamination, of alternative crop-management systems. It simulates crop development and the movement of water, nutrients and pesticides over and through the root zone for a representative unit area of an agricultural field over multiple years. The model allows simulation of a wide spectrum of management practices and scenarios with special features such as the rapid transport of surface-applied chemicals through macropores to deeper depths and the preferential transport of chemicals within the soil matrix via mobile-immobile zones. The transfer of surface-applied chemicals (pesticides in particular) to runoff water is also an important component.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although the claypan of North Central Missouri is traditionally believed to protect the groundwater from contamination, low concentrations of the herbicide atrazine have been detected in a shallow glacial till aquifer. The fate of the atrazine in the aquifer is not well known. With the continued use of atrazine, the concentration in the aquifer could increase to levels of concern or decrease if the conditions are not favorable for persistence. Beginning in the Fall 2007 and continuing through the Fall 2008, concentrations of atrazine and its degradation products deethylatrazine (DEA) and deisopropylatrazine (DIA) were measured at a typical field in Northeast Boone County, Missouri. The concentration ratio of DEA to atrazine (DAR) supports the concept that preferential flow paths within the claypan allow for direct transport of atrazine to the aquifer. These data were also necessary for constructing computer based flow models of the aquifer. Using the programs MODFLOW and MT3DMS within GMS 6.0, a groundwater flow model was produced that was coupled with a solute transport model of atrazine within the saturated zone. The model was constructed using constraints of historical use of atrazine since 1991. The model results were similar to those measured in the field and predictive simulations did not indicate an increase of atrazine concentration to alarming levels.

This book was released on 1995 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Describes a study conducted to: determine the kinetics of dissipation & bound residue formation of widely used pesticides (the herbicides atrazine, metolachlor, & metribuzin) in the Great Lakes area; test laboratory derived dissipation & bound residue formation data; provide decay rates & hydrologic transport parameters for soils in the Great Lakes Basin as input for simulation models; and modify the LEACHP pesticide fate & transport model to provide improved measures of pesticide dissipation kinetics. The study involved a series of experiments and field tests to determine the effect of soil structure on dissipation & bound residue formation, the kinetics of dissipation & bound residue formation in the laboratory & field, the leaching of herbicides, the release of aged residues, and water & transport parameters for use in the model. Results discussed include the variations in herbicide dissipation among different types of soils and tillage practices, the mineralization & volatilization of herbicides in the field, and the performance of the modified LEACHP model.

Book excerpt: The EXPRES expert system is designed to aid regulatory personnel in their assessment of the potential for pesticides to contaminate the soil and shallow groundwater environment. The system consists of one screening assessment model and two mathematical simulation models. This report reviews the theory of pesticide transport and transformation in the unsaturated zone, the models used in the expert system, the development and operation of EXPRES, results from an evaluation of EXPRES using four case studies typical of a pesticide assessment, and scenarios illustrating the application of EXPRES. Appendices include a list of pesticides in the EXPRES data base, sample screens, and lists of EXPRES files. This report serves as a user manual for the expert system.
