Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Familiar Illustration of Christian Baptism: In Which the Proper Subjects of That Ordinance and the Mode of Administration Are Ascertained From the Word of God and the History of the Church This method is liable to one objection. The writer has the opportunity 'of putting words into his opponent's mouth. All I can say to remove this, is, that I have studiously endeavoured to make my lebbeus a thorough Baptist. While the argument was in train, I carefully avoided putting any concession into his mouth, but what I have seen or heard advanced on that side (if the question. His arguments and objections are usually taken from some Baptist writer, and when the quotation could be made verbatim, or nearly so, it is designated as such. I have referred, but in few cases, to the authors' names, as it would be attaching to many pamphlets, a consequence, of which they are really uh worthy. The attention which has been bestowed upon them, is not on account of their intrinsic merits, but because of their imposing influence on the ignorant and unwary. The intelligent reader may be ready to imagine that, in some instances, 1 have descend ed to objections that were really unworthy of notice. My only apology is, I have been writing for the benefit of the illiterate, whose minds are often influenced by trifies. L have, therefore, past over no argument or objection on the Other side of the ques tion, that appeared calculated to impose on the uninformed mind. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Familiar Treatise on Christian Baptism: Illustrated With Engravings, Designed for Young Christians and Baptized Children The following treatise is not designed for the learne ed. The reader therefore need not expect to find any attempt at learned criticism. The first part, ex cept a few additions now made, was published sev enteen years ago, and addressed to a young convert, one of the author's pastoral charge, for Whose spe cial ben efit it was written. Fprepared it, as I then said in an introductory note, not because there are no works on the subject Which I for the most part approve, nor because I consider myself capable of writing With greater, or even equal ability with many whose writings are before the public; but because most of the works on this subject are either too long, are written With too much acrimony, or are not sufficiently simple for common readers. Book Synopsis The Old Faith in a New Nation by : Paul J. Gutacker
Download or read book The Old Faith in a New Nation written by Paul J. Gutacker and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2023 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Conventional wisdom holds that tradition and history meant little to nineteenth-century American Protestants, who relied on common sense and "the Bible alone." The Old Faith in a New Nation challenges this portrayal by recovering evangelical engagement with the Christian past. Even when they appeared to be most scornful toward tradition, most optimistic and forward-looking, and most confident in their grasp of the Bible, evangelicals found themselves returning, time and again, to Christian history. They studied religious historiography, reinterpreted the history of the church, and argued over its implications for the present. Between the Revolution and the Civil War, American Protestants were deeply interested in the meaning of the Christian past. Paul J. Gutacker draws from hundreds of print sources-sermons, books, speeches, legal arguments, political petitions, and more-to show how ordinary educated Americans remembered and used Christian history. While claiming to rely on the Bible alone, antebellum Protestants frequently turned to the Christian past on questions of import: how should the government relate to religion? Could Catholic immigrants become true Americans? What opportunities and rights should be available to women? To African Americans? Protestants across denominations answered these questions not only with the Bible but also with history. By recovering the ways in which American evangelicals remembered and used Christian history, The Old Faith in a New Nation shows how religious memory shaped the nation and interrogates the meaning of "biblicism."
