Busy trying to keep her printing business afloat amidst rising taxes and the suppression of radical printers like her son, the last thing the widow wants is to be the victim of a thousand bees. But when a beautiful beekeeper arrives to take care of the pests, Agatha may be in danger of being stung by something far more dangerous… Penelope Flood exists between two worlds in her small seaside town, the society of rich landowners and the tradesfolk. Soon, tensions boil over when the formerly exiled Queen arrives on England’s shores—and when Penelope’s long-absent husband returns to Melliton, she once again finds herself torn, between her burgeoning love for Agatha and her loyalty to the man who once gave her refuge. As Penelope finally discovers her true place, Agatha must learn to accept the changing world in front of her. But will these longing hearts settle for a safe but stale existence or will they learn to fight for the future they most desire?

No matter how one prepares, the depth of the love indicates the length of time one grieves and in most cases how one grieves. This book shares how the author experienced the stages of grief generally and specifically within widowhood. It is sure to trigger tears, but prayerfully it will begin to repair broken hearts and aid those who have a desire to live again with purpose from a calm and peaceful place at a steady and healthy pace.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Later-life widowhood is the expectation of most older wives, since statistically women live longer than men and tend to marry men older than themselves. Despite this there has been little coverage of the complexities of later-life widowhood. In this book Pat Chambers redresses this balance, combining an analysis of the literature that does exist with qualitative research amongst older widows. The research reveals a multi-faceted experience of later-life widowhood. Older widows life stories challenge the dominant public narrative of misery and decline, pointing instead to a complexity of experience which is rooted in personal biography and the female life course rather than in later-life widowhood itself. Chambers develops the concept of multiple narratives as a way of uncovering the complex, but often hidden lives of older widows. Without such an understanding, she argues, it is all too easy to subscribe to the powerfully dominant public narrative and thus to misinterpret older widows current needs and aspirations. This is an engaging and original study of a key topic for gerontological research and will be of great interest to sociologists and social policy scholars who study ageing and the life course.

Book excerpt: Sudden paralysis is a circumstance no one wishes to get intimately familiar with, but such tragedies do unfortunately occur. In my own experience, I've learned that a mother will search desperately for the tools of education whenever they're required, but when my son was involved in a life-changing accident, I could find no shared experiences written of by another parent. After living through the experience of the accident's aftermath and the many months of rehabilitation, I was eventually able to sit down and put words onto paper in the hope that another mother would one day find my experience helpful during their own times of learning and searching. That immediate past so suddenly lost, without preparation of any kind, brought my old son into focus at the same time as my mind was trying to meet the new one-who was in many ways a stranger based on the physical limitations and changes now present in his life. During this time is when I met the ghost-- and the handsome man in the wheelchair. I was determined to do so positively, but had no instruction book on the new parenting needs. We learned together, all of us who loved my son, and I can now see that part of the lesson is that the ghost leaves us in his own time as we learn to let him go. There is no one-means or one-method lesson book. I have tried as honestly as I can to share my experience as a mother. My attempt is supported by my courageously inspiring son who was the motivator and teacher in many ways and by his younger brother who shared commitment and devotion with me. At the end of our story-which is truly a beginning of another-our lives are full and blessings continue to enrich our times together. The goal of this book is that the reader will find something that will take them through Hell Week to the start of their loved one's new life with more hope and confidence. Many have contributed to our progress; I hope I may contribute to the hopefulness of others in similar circumstances.

Book excerpt: A mesmerizing debut novel about love, grief, and the ghosts who show up where we least expect them. Sarah McConnell's husband had been dead for three months when she saw him in the grocery store. What does a woman do when she's thirty-nine, childless, and completely alone for the first time in her life? Does it mean she's crazy to think she sees her late husband beside a display of pumpkins? Or is it just what people do, a natural response to grief that will fade in time? That's what Sarah McConnell's friends told her, that it was natural, would last a season, and then fade away. But what if there was another answer? What if he was really there? They never found the body, after all. What if he is still here somehow, and about to walk back into her life?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Becoming a widow is one of the most traumatic life events that a woman can experience. Yet, as this remarkable new collection reveals, each woman responds to that trauma differently. Here, forty-three widows tell their stories, in their own words. Some were widowed young, while others were married for decades. Some cared for their late partners through long terminal illnesses, while others lost their partners suddenly. Some had male partners, while others had female partners. Yet each of these women faced the same basic dilemma: how to go on living when a part of you is gone. Widows’ Words is arranged chronologically, starting with stories of women preparing for their partners’ deaths, followed by the experiences of recent widows still reeling from their fresh loss, and culminating in the accounts of women who lost their partners many years ago but still experience waves of grief. Their accounts deal honestly with feelings of pain, sorrow, and despair, and yet there are also powerful expressions of strength, hope, and even joy. Whether you are a widow yourself or have simply experienced loss, you will be sure to find something moving and profound in these diverse tales of mourning, remembrance, and resilience.

Book excerpt: “You will stay up all night reading this gem” (Christie Tate, New York Times bestselling author) about a widow whose life is turned upside down when she uncovers the truth about her late husband. A lyrical, witty, and deeply moving memoir of betrayal and forgiveness. While mourning her husband’s sudden death, Jessica Waite discovered shocking secrets that undermined everything she thought she knew about the man she’d loved and trusted. From secret affairs to drug use and a pornography addiction, Waite was overwhelmed reconciling this devastating information with her new reality as a widowed single mom. Then, to further complicate matters, strange, inexplicable coincidences forced her to consider whether her husband was reaching back from beyond the grave. With unflinching honesty, Waite details her tumultuous love story and the pain of adjusting to the new normal she built for herself and her son. “A candid, raw chronicle of bereavement” (Kirkus Reviews), The Widow’s Guide to Dead Bastards is also a lyrical exploration of mental health, single parenthood, and betrayal that demonstrates that the most moving love stories aren’t perfect—they’re flawed and poignantly real.
