Book excerpt: The proposal for multiprofessional work in mental health brings a special form of organization with the joint contribution of health professionals that can work as a team in assisting people with psychological disorders. It aims to provide the most appropriate and complete assistance to users with mental disorders regardless of the degree of morbidity. In this sense, the determination of the National Health Council of Brazil is to recognize as regulated health professionals the following regulated professional categories: Social Workers; Biologists; Biomedical; Dental Surgeons; Physical Education; Nurses; Pharmacists; Physiotherapists; Speech therapists; Doctors; Veterinary Physicians; Nutritionists; Psychologists; and Occupational Therapists. They contributed decisively working together, allowing professionals to act in health actions nationwide, leaving the Unified Health System (Sistema Único de Saúde- SUS) the legitimacy attributed by the Magna Charta Libertatum of Brazil, to proceed with the norms for training the professionals that make up the sector’s of Health “The Unified Health System is responsible, under the terms of the law: to order the training of human resources in the area of health”. Through this legal framework, integrative health policies provided conditions for establishing the various transformations in the socio-political-cultural scenarios, reflecting on the epidemiological contour of society, leading to an increase changes in health models and contributing decisively to the conversions of care práxis, incorporating the multiprofessionality with agents with medium technical training through the Community Health Agent, Nursing Technician and Oral Health Technician. The establishment of knowledge and practices that provide the integration of the common field of activity of the multiprofessional teams, in the various performance scenarios, conducts the various actions which include the Family Health Support Center, Health at School Program, Health Academy, culminating in Psychosocial Care Centers I, II and III. They are specialized compositions in the approach to mental health for the treatment and social reintegration of SUS with mental disorders of different magnitudes users. In this way, it is evident that in Mental Health care by a multiprofessional team, it provides a gain for service users and contributes decisively to professionalization at different levels of training, as a result of continuing education in service.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Clinics in Developmental Medicine No. 179 The complex nature of the postural control system makes it vulnerable to adverse conditions during early life, such as prenatally or perinatally acquired lesions of the brain or preterm birth. Children with disorders of the developing brain nearly always have dysfunctions in postural control. The postural control system of children with other neurodevelopmental disabilities such as myelomeningocele or muscle disease is also challenged: it has to find age-specific solutions for the postural problems posed by the disorder. These postural problems have serious consequences for the activities of daily life, as adequate postural control is a prerequisite for adequate motility. Until now, knowledge about the nature of postural problems in children has been scattered, and this has hampered the development of appropriate therapeutic management strategies. This book is a breakthrough in that it introduces the reader to the complexity of typical and atypical postural development and provides suggestions for the day-to-day management of postural problems in children with developmental disorders such as cerebral palsy, developmental coordination disorder, muscle disorder and myelomeningocoele. “This should be a ‘must read’ for anyone whose occupation or interests are in the areas of motor development or rehabilitation” Diane Damiano.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Most psychologists claim that we begin to develop a “theory of mind”—some basic ideas about other people’s minds—at age two or three, by inference, deduction, and logical reasoning. But does this mean that small babies are unaware of minds? That they see other people simply as another (rather dynamic and noisy) kind of object? This is a common view in developmental psychology. Yet, as this book explains, there is compelling evidence that babies in the first year of life can tease, pretend, feel self-conscious, and joke with people. Using observations from infants’ everyday interactions with their families, Vasudevi Reddy argues that such early emotional engagements show infants’ growing awareness of other people’s attention, expectations, and intentions. Reddy deals with the persistent problem of “other minds” by proposing a “second-person” solution: we know other minds if we can respond to them. And we respond most richly in engagement with them. She challenges psychology’s traditional “detached” stance toward understanding people, arguing that the most fundamental way of knowing minds—both for babies and for adults—is through engagement with them. According to this argument the starting point for understanding other minds is not isolation and ignorance but emotional relation."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book advances knowledge about the measurement of empathy, using the Basic Empathy Scale (BES), and how empathy is related to offending, aggression, and bullying in community and incarcerated groups. Empathy is widely accepted as one of the most important individual factors that is related to offending, aggression, and bullying, and it is common in many intervention projects to aim to improve empathy in order to reduce offending, aggression, and bullying. The BES was constructed by Jolliffe and Farrington (2006) and has been widely used in a number of countries. This book presents a collection of papers exploring the application of BES in 10 different countries (England, Portugal, Spain, Poland, Italy, the Netherlands, Croatia, Australia, Canada, and the USA). Each chapter reviews the use of the BES in that particular jurisdiction, its psychometric properties, and its importance in relation to offending, aggression, and bullying. The research includes samples from primary schools, secondary schools, and the community, as well as those who are justice-involved and on probation, in prisons and secure psychiatric hospitals. In bringing together this broad range of contributions, the book concludes with wider implications for intervention, policy, and practice. This book will be valuable for students, academics, and practitioners who are interested in developing their understanding of the complex link between empathy and a range of antisocial behaviours.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Selwyn Goldsmith's Designing for the Disabled has, since it was first published in 1963, been a bible for practising architects around the world. Now, as a new book with a radical new vision, comes his Designing for the Disabled: The New Paradigm. Goldsmith's new paradigm is based on the concept of architectural disability. As a version of the social model of disability, it is not exclusively the property of physically disabled people. Others who are afflicted by it include women, since men customarily get proportionately four times as many amenities in public toilets as women - and women have to queue where men do not - and those with infants in pushchairs, because normal WC facilities are invariably too small to get a pushchair and infant into. To counter architectural disability, Goldsmith's line is that the axiom for legislation action has to be 'access for everyone' - it should not just be 'access for the disabled', as it presently is with the Part M building regulation and relevant provisions of the 1995 Disability Discrimination Act. In a 40-page annex to his book he sets out the terms that a new-style Part M regulation and its Approved Document might take, one that would cover alterations to existing buildings as well as new buildings. But architects and building control officers need not, he says, wait for new a legislation to apply new practical procedures to meet the requirements of the current Part M regulation; they can, as he advises, act positively now. This is a book which will oblige architects to rethink the methodology of designing for the disabled. It is a book that no practising architect, building control officer, local planning officer or access officer can afford to be without.

Managers, psychologists, social scientists, and all serious observers of organizational behavior and development will be intrigued and guided by this important book, which brings together this vision and accounts of leading-edge research, concepts and methods. The study of organizations is defined by what scholars and researchers actually do. Book excerpt: "Occupational therapy always has focused on the individual as active in meaningful and purposeful activity. In hippotherapy, the therapist uses the horse as an intervention strategy to help stimulate a client, who passively sits astride a moving horse and then accommodates himself or herself to the movement. If there is no active, purposeful participation and the client is not actively or purposely involved, how does occupational therapy fit? That question is answered in this book, the first of its kind to detail the field's current and potential contributions to Hippotherapy. The chapters in this book will be useful for undergraduate and graduate students who want to study more about hippotherapy; for faculty members who plan to include hippotherapy in their academic curricula; for researchers who are studying and documenting hippotherapy; for clinicians who are working in hippotherapy or therapeutic horseback riding and want to update their knowledge in research or a particular practice area; and for riders or their parents who are interested in the development, application, and benefits of hippotherapy."--Note de l'éditeur.
