The second edition of Feedback Control Theory for Dynamic Traffic Assignment has been thoroughly updated with completely new chapters: a review of the DTA problem and emphasizing real-time-feedback-based problems; an up-to-date presentation of pertinent traffic-flow theory; and a treatment of the mathematical solution to the traffic dynamics. Book excerpt: For a traffic management system (TMS) to improve traffic flow, TMS operators must develop effective routing strategies based on the data collected by the system. The purpose of this research was to build prototype decision support systems (DSS) for the real-time development of such strategies. We used the freeway system controlled by the Suffolk (Virginia) TMS as a test case. A routing DSS has (1) a search mechanism that allows the space of possible routing strategies to be explored thoroughly but efficiently, and (2) an evaluation routine that estimates the effectiveness of a particular strategy. We combined the search and evaluation routines to develop two DSS prototypes: a simple shock-wave DSS that required very little input data and a heuristic search/dynamic traffic assignment (DTA) DSS that demanded more input and computations but captured traffic dynamics better. We evaluated the prototypes based on the agreement of their recommended strategies with prior expectations and their potential for real-time applications. The results are promising. For the shock-wave DSS, the diversion percentages recommended agree with prior expectations. For the heuristic search/DTA model, the results are consistent regardless of the start point for the search algorithm.

A recent National Science Foundation workshop on “Dynamic Route Guidance and Traffic Control” was organized in June 2010 at Rutgers University by Prof. Kaan Ozbay, Prof. Satish Ukkusuri , Prof. Hani Nassif, and Professor Pushkin Kachroo. This workshop brought together experts in this area from universities, industry and federal/state agencies to present recent findings in this area. Various topics were presented at the workshop including dynamic traffic assignment, traffic flow modeling, network control, complex systems, mobile sensor deployment, intelligent traffic systems and data collection issues. This book is motivated by the research presented at this workshop and the discussions that followed.

Book excerpt: Transportation planning and operation requires determining the state of the transportation system under different network supply and demand conditions. The most fundamental determinant of the state of a transportation system is time-varying traffic flow pattern on its roadway segments. It forms a basis for numerous engineering analyses which are used in operational- and planning-level decision-making process. Dynamic traffic assignment (DTA) models are the leading modeling tools employed to determine time-varying traffic flow pattern under changing network conditions. DTA models have matured over the past three decades, and are now being adopted by transportation planning agencies and traffic management centers. However, DTA models for large-scale regional networks require excessive computational resources. The problem becomes further compounded for other applications such as congestion pricing, capacity calibration, and network design for which DTA needs to be solved repeatedly as a sub-problem. This dissertation aims to improve the efficiency of the DTA models, and increase their viability for various planning and operational applications. To this end, a suite of computational methods based on the combinatorial approach for dynamic traffic assignment was developed in this dissertation. At first, a new polynomial run time combinatorial algorithm for DTA was developed. The combinatorial DTA (CDTA) model complements and aids simulation-based DTA models rather than replace them. This is because various policy measures and active traffic control strategies are best modeled using the simulation-based DTA models. Solution obtained from the CDTA model was provided as an initial feasible solution to a simulation-based DTA model to improve its efficiency -- this process is called "warm starting" the simulation-based DTA model. To further improve the efficiency of the simulation-based DTA model, the warm start process is made more efficient through parallel computing. Parallel computing was applied to the CDTA model and the traffic simulator used for warm starting. Finally, another warm start method based on the static traffic assignment model was tested on the simulation-based DTA model. The computational methods developed in this dissertation were tested on the Anaheim, CA and Winnipeg, Canada networks. Models warm-started using the CDTA solution performed better than the purely simulation-based DTA models in terms of equilibrium convergence metrics and run time. Warm start methods using solutions from the static traffic assignment models showed similar improvements. Parallel computing was applied to the CDTA model, and it resulted in faster execution time by employing multiple computer processors. Parallel version of the traffic simulator can also be embedded into the simulation-assignment framework of the simulation-based DTA models and improve their efficiency.

Most existing dynamic traffic assignment models assume that drivers heading to a Major Traffic Generator (MTG) have sufficient knowledge of roadway networks. In this report, the concept of recognition level is defined to categorize drivers based on their unfamiliarity of the network and of the alternative routes between origins and destinations. Each catalog is assigned a specific utility function that is dependent on travel time, length of route and recognition parameters. Drivers' route choice behavior is determined by these specific utility functions. A sample network is first employed to test the feasibility of the proposed model, and the result complies with the specified travel patterns. After that, a real network near Downtown Houston is used to further test the proposed model. An experiment is conducted based on the information collected from an on-site survey and the on-line real-time traffic map from Houston TranStar. In order to validate the necessity of the proposed model, a control experiment is carried out with all parameters being set in the same way as the designed experiment except that drivers are assumed to be fully familiar with the network layout and alternative routes. Test results show that the proposed model can fit the real case very well. The developed algorithm and the assessment procedure results are not only awfully imperative in trailblazing guide signing for MTGs, but also indispensable in both the modern Route Guidance System (RGS) and the Advanced Traveler Information System (ATIS), which are important components of the Intelligent Transportation System (ITS).
