Despite the clear importance of replacement, little work examines the separate roles of adoption and replacement. The analysis is complicated by the fact that a consumer's decision to replace a product is dynamic because high-tech markets undergo both rapid improvements in quality and falling prices. To address these issues, I develop and estimate a dynamic consumer demand model that explicitly accounts for the replacement decision when consumers are uncertain about both future product price and quality. Using a unique data set from the PC processor industry, I show how to combine aggregate data on sales and product ownership to infer replacement behavior. The results reveal substantial variation in replacement behavior over time, and this heterogeneity provides an opportunity for managers to tailor their product introduction and pricing strategies to target the particular segment of consumers that is most likely to replace in the near future.

Book excerpt: New technologies are crucial in dealing with the problem of air and water pollution, which is an increasingly important issue with serious health and environmental consequences. However, adoption of environmentally friendly technologies can be slow if the new technologies are not superior in terms of the firms' private incentives, if firms have long equipment replacement cycles, or if firms do not have sufficient information to evaluate whether or not a switch to a green technology is in their private interests. To evaluate these potential explanations and the policies designed to address them, I use an importance sampling technique with simulated maximum likelihood estimation to estimate two separate dynamic, durable good replacement models with entry and exit for garment cleaning firms in southern California, where alternative cleaning technologies have seen only limited adoption to date. The first model is a single-agent model, whereas the second model allows firms' profits to depend on the states of their competitors. I utilize a unique data set comprised of equipment permitting information, grant recipient lists, and product demonstration attendance lists, and I control for and exploit changing legislation to estimate the effect of fees and incentives on green equipment purchases, as well as the effect of the product demonstrations. The single-agent models are used to perform counterfactual analyses to compare the predicted adoption and entry/exit decisions by firms under different regulatory regimes. While the models are tailored to the garment cleaning industry, it can be adapted to other applications involving the diffusion of technologies in regulated industries.

This paper investigates whether the market power of condominium developers is a factor in explaining the outcome in this market and whether there is a relationship between production cost trend and the degree of market power that the developers were able to exercise. In order to respond to these questions, a dynamic durable goods oligopoly model of the condominium market-one incorporating time-variant costs and a secondary market-is constructed and structurally estimated using a nested GMM procedure. On the basis of estimates and counterfactual experiments using the estimated model, the following results are obtained. First, the data provide no evidence that firms in the primary market have substantial market power in this industry. Second, the counterfactual experiment provides evidence that inflationary and deflationary expectations on production cost trends have asymmetric effects to the market power of condominium producers: the increase in their markup when cost inflation is anticipated is significantly higher than the decrease in the markup when the same magnitude of cost deflation is anticipated.--Author's description.
