Book excerpt: Drilling and production wells are becoming more digitalized as oil and gas companies continue to implement machine learning andbig data solutions to save money on projects while reducing energy and emissions. Up to now there has not been one cohesiveresource that bridges the gap between theory and application, showing how to go from computer modeling to practical use. Methodsfor Petroleum Well Optimization: Automation and Data Solutions gives today's engineers and researchers real-time data solutionsspecific to drilling and production assets. Structured for training, this reference covers key concepts and detailed approaches frommathematical to real-time data solutions through technological advances. Topics include digital well planning and construction, moving teams into Onshore Collaboration Centers, operations with the best machine learning (ML) and metaheuristic algorithms, complex trajectories for wellbore stability, real-time predictive analytics by data mining, optimum decision-making, and case-basedreasoning. Supported by practical case studies, and with references including links to open-source code and fit-for-use MATLAB, R,Julia, Python and other standard programming languages, Methods for Petroleum Well Optimization delivers a critical training guidefor researchers and oil and gas engineers to take scientifically based approaches to solving real field problems. - Bridges the gap between theory and practice (from models to code) with content from the latest research developments supported by practical case study examples and questions at the end of each chapter - Enables understanding of real-time data solutions and automation methods available specific to drilling and production wells, suchas digital well planning and construction through to automatic systems - Promotes the use of open-source code which will help companies, engineers, and researchers develop their prediction and analysissoftware more quickly; this is especially appropriate in the application of multivariate techniques to the real-world problems of petroleum well optimization

Book excerpt: This book reports the results of exhaustive research work on modeling and control of vertical oil well drilling systems. It is focused on the analysis of the system-dynamic response and the elimination of the most damaging drill string vibration modes affecting overall perforation performance: stick-slip (torsional vibration) and bit-bounce (axial vibration). The text is organized in three parts. The first part, Modeling, presents lumped- and distributed-parameter models that allow the dynamic behavior of the drill string to be characterized; a comprehensive mathematical model taking into account mechanical and electric components of the overall drilling system is also provided. The distributed nature of the system is accommodated by considering a system of wave equations subject to nonlinear boundary conditions; this model is transformed into a pair of neutral-type time-delay equations which can overcome the complexity involved in the analysis and simulation of the partial differential equation model. The second part, Analysis, is devoted to the study of the response of the system described by the time-delay model; important properties useful for analyzing system stability are investigated and frequency- and time-domain techniques are reviewed. Part III, Control, concerns the design of stabilizing control laws aimed at eliminating undesirable drilling vibrations; diverse control techniques based on infinite--dimensional system representations are designed and evaluated. The control proposals are shown to be effective in suppressing stick-slip and bit-bounce so that a considerable improvement of the overall drilling performance can be achieved. This self-contained book provides operational guidelines to avoid drilling vibrations. Furthermore, since the modeling and control techniques presented here can be generalized to treat diverse engineering problems, it constitutes a useful resource to researchers working on control and its engineering application in oil well drilling.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Used to clean the borehole, stabilize rock, control pressures, or enhance drilling rates, drilling fluids and their circulation systems are used in all phases of a drilling operation. These systems are highly dynamic and complicated to model until now. Written by an author with over 25 years of experience, Applied Drilling Circulation Systems: Hydraulics, Calculations and Models provide users with the necessary analytical/numerical models to handle problems associated with the design and optimization of cost-effective drilling circulation systems. The only book which combines system modeling, design, and equipment, Applied Drilling Circulation Systems: Hydraulics, Calculations and Models provides a clear and rigorous exposition of traditional and non-traditional circulation systems and equipment followed by self contained chapters concerning system modelling applications. Theories are illustrated by case studies based on the author's real life experience. The book is accompanied by a website which permits readers to construct, validate, and run models employing Newtonian fluids, Bingham Plastic fluids, Power Law fluids, and aerated fluids principles. This combination book and website arrangement will prove particularly useful to drilling and production engineers who need to plan operations including pipe-tripping, running-in casing, and cementing. - In-depth coverage of both on- and offshore drilling hydraulics. - Methods for optimizing both on- and offshore drilling hydraulics. - Contains problems and solutions based on years of experience.
