Do you fret about peanut butter sticking to the roof of your mouth? Do you secretly fear that somewhere, somehow, a duck is watching you? We are all fascinated by phobias and the weird and wonderful things that people are afraid of. Some phobias are those many of us can identify with – fear of needles, spiders or snakes for example – but others are harder to explain, such as the fear of string, or the fear of paper, fear of the colour red. And some are truly strange and unusual: fear of being tickled with feathers, fear or things to the left side of the body, fear of peanut butter sticking to the roof of your mouth and of course fear that a duck is watching you … With an introduction on the biological origins of fear and anxiety by science broadcaster Bernie Hobbs, this book takes a light-hearted look at phobias. So what are you afraid of? Take a look inside and discover the things that make our hearts race and our stomachs clench: the big, the small and the sticky.

Book excerpt: "Riveting, chilling, and page-turning. Be prepared to stay up all night." -- New York Times bestselling author Lisa Scottoline For fans of dark and twisty psychological thrillers, Watch Me is a riveting novel of suspense about how far obsession can go. Kate Youngblood is disappearing. Muddling through her late 30s as a creative writing professor at Blackwood college, she’s dangerously close to never being noticed again. The follow-up novel to her successful debut tanked. Her husband left her for a woman ten years younger. She’s always been bright, beautiful, independent and a little wild, but now her glow is starting to vanish. She’s heading into an age where her eyes are less blue, her charm worn out, and soon no one will ever truly look at her, want to know her, again. Except one. Sam Grist is Kate’s most promising student. An unflinching writer with razor-sharp clarity who gravitates towards dark themes and twisted plots, his raw talent is something Kate wants to nurture into literary success. But he’s not there solely to be the best writer. He’s been watching her. Wanting her. Working his way to her for years. As Sam slowly makes his way into Kate’s life, they enter a deadly web of dangerous lies and forbidden desire. But how far will his fixation go? And how far will she allow it? A gripping novel exploring intense obsession and illicit attraction, Jody Gehrman introduces a world where what you desire most may be the most dangerous thing of all.

Book excerpt: “It’s wonderful, aggressively wise, and always—especially at its most serious—devastatingly funny.” —Geoff Dyer For readers of Douglas Stuart and Nick Hornby comes an uproarious, tenderhearted memoir of growing up in working-class Dundee in the 1970s and 1980s. Don Paterson is one of our most acclaimed contemporary poets, possessed of “an infinite sensitivity to the world” (Zadie Smith). But his current standing gives few hints of his hilariously misspent youth. An indifferent student prone to obsessions (with girls at school and . . . origami), Paterson nevertheless made clear early on his immense gift for observation. In Toy Fights, he vividly re-creates the customs of the Scottish working class, from the titular childhood game (“basically twenty minutes of extreme violence without pretext”) to the virtues of the sugary sweet known as tablet. When American pop culture arrived, Paterson fell hard for the so-called outlaw sound; by his teens, he was traveling with his father, a Stetson-wearing “country” musician, and becoming guitar-mad himself. A memoir of family, music, and highly inventive profanity, Toy Fights is an unforgettable account of the years we all spend in rehearsal for real life.

Book excerpt: In this instant New York Times bestseller, Angela Duckworth shows anyone striving to succeed that the secret to outstanding achievement is not talent, but a special blend of passion and persistence she calls “grit.” “Inspiration for non-geniuses everywhere” (People). The daughter of a scientist who frequently noted her lack of “genius,” Angela Duckworth is now a celebrated researcher and professor. It was her early eye-opening stints in teaching, business consulting, and neuroscience that led to her hypothesis about what really drives success: not genius, but a unique combination of passion and long-term perseverance. In Grit, she takes us into the field to visit cadets struggling through their first days at West Point, teachers working in some of the toughest schools, and young finalists in the National Spelling Bee. She also mines fascinating insights from history and shows what can be gleaned from modern experiments in peak performance. Finally, she shares what she’s learned from interviewing dozens of high achievers—from JP Morgan CEO Jamie Dimon to New Yorker cartoon editor Bob Mankoff to Seattle Seahawks Coach Pete Carroll. “Duckworth’s ideas about the cultivation of tenacity have clearly changed some lives for the better” (The New York Times Book Review). Among Grit’s most valuable insights: any effort you make ultimately counts twice toward your goal; grit can be learned, regardless of IQ or circumstances; when it comes to child-rearing, neither a warm embrace nor high standards will work by themselves; how to trigger lifelong interest; the magic of the Hard Thing Rule; and so much more. Winningly personal, insightful, and even life-changing, Grit is a book about what goes through your head when you fall down, and how that—not talent or luck—makes all the difference. This is “a fascinating tour of the psychological research on success” (The Wall Street Journal).

Book excerpt: An engaging, affectionate reflection on finding love, making wine, and life in a small rural community. The first time Deborah Coddington lived in Martinborough was in the height of the hippy era, when the old mansion Waiura attracted poets, protesters, novelists, photographers, artists and activists. It was a counter-culture scene of some privilege and distinction. However, the music stopped when, crushed by debts, she and her partner Alister Taylor were forced to leave town. Nearly 40 years on, with a successful career as a journalist, a stint as a restaurateur and a term in Parliament behind her, Deborah returned to Martinborough not quite sure of the welcome she would receive. In this wry, amusing and heartfelt memoir, she writes of finding a community full of outstanding and entertaining individuals that demonstrates the can-do, all-in-this-together spirit of provincial New Zealand. Now a good deal wiser and very much in love with her new husband, Colin Carruthers QC, Deborah lays some ghosts to rest, writes movingly about the death of her mother, details the vicissitudes of being a wine grower and shares the joy of life with her beloved animals. Confiding, candid and generous of heart, this is a tribute to small-town New Zealand.

Book excerpt: A world doesn’t need a king to be prosperous, but it definitely needs great morals and principals for it to be prosperous. For a world that is turning into hell, the Supreme Being planned a game called ‘God’s Chess.’ Ajin, a twisted college president, and another seven pieces, a prostitute, a scientist, a general, a reporter, an actress, an educator, and a queen play the game. The game they are playing for a wish come true is a holy book to a world that has rotten to the core and forgotten humanity.

Before the war Charlie was a member of a National Guard cavalry unit. In 1942 he enlisted at Fort Riley, where they were still training horse units. Two years later Charlie was recruited by the OSS. After training, Charlie shipped out in July 1944 for England. After training as a spy, in late 1944 he went to France in an OSS section attached to Seventh Army. The last half of the book details his experiences recruiting locals as agents to perform intelligence missions, often going behind German lines. During one such mission, things go wrong and Charlie's actions result in his receiving a Silver Star. He was among those who went into Dachau after the camp was liberated. Charlie's job was to locate certain individuals among the prisoners who had been recruited by the OSS as spies and had fallen into enemy hands, and to get them back. Charlie's memoir covers two topics-cavalry and the OSS-that have seen little coverage in WW2 memoirs. 13 photos.

Book excerpt: Sometimes it takes a lot to get your webbed feet wet! An adorable picture book makes a splash with a satisfying story about conquering your fears. I cannot swim, and that is bad. A landlocked duck is very sad. One day, an egg rolled out of a nest and right into a deep pond. Now that egg is a little duck, and the water is still very scary. Jumping into the pond at all seems impossible, never mind swimming in a line with all his brothers. “You’re a duck, and ducks don’t sink,” Big Frog points out. Practicing in a puddle helps a little, while backrubs and snacks from his mother help a little more. Big Frog offers to hold his friend’s wing and dive in together, but our little duck knows that some challenges need to be faced alone. Even when they are very scary!
