Book Synopsis Dictionary of Basilian Biography by : P. Wallace Platt
Download or read book Dictionary of Basilian Biography written by P. Wallace Platt and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2005-12-15 with total page 601 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Dictionary of Basilian Biography contains 632 biographical entries on the members of the Congregation of Saint Basil who died in the years between 1822, when the congregation was founded, and 2002. The dictionary presents the personal background, education, and various appointments as well as the character, talents, and bibliography of each member, while defining the contribution of each in the educational or pastoral work of the Basilian Fathers. This heritage belongs not only to the Basilian Fathers or the Catholic Church, but to the wider societies and cultures of the countries that were touched by the work of the Basilians. This second edition of the Dictionary of Basilian Biography is approximately three times the size of the original edition by Father Robert J. Scollard, published in 1969. The increase in size is due not only to the additional number of members who died between that year and 2002, but also to additional archival research into the lives and careers of the early members of the Congregation in France. It represents eight years of work by editor P. Wallace Platt and his editorial board, enriching the book and balancing its presentation.

Book Synopsis Waning of the Green by : Mark George McGowan
Download or read book Waning of the Green written by Mark George McGowan and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 1999 with total page 430 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: McGowan traces the evolution of the Catholic community from an isolated religious and Irish ethnic subculture in the late nineteenth century into an integrated segment of English Canadian society by the early twentieth century. English-speaking Catholics moved into all neighbourhoods of the city and socialized with and married non-Catholics. They even embraced their own brand of imperialism: by 1914 thousands of them had enlisted to fight for God and the British Empire. McGowan's detailed and lively portrait will be of great interest to students and scholars of religious history, Irish studies, ethnic history, and Canadian history.

Entries include the following elements when available: author/editor, title, place of publication, publisher, publication date, and number of pages. Citations from 85 countries are included. Entries are by country, dependency, and territory. The United States has been further divided by state. Names of institutions are in English. References are in the language in which they were written. The majority of the citations should be available in a library somewhere in the United States. Obscure sources that may be difficult to obtain have been included because they are often the only citation. All editions of a title as well as older works are included because of their potential value to a researcher. Book excerpt: When Charles Hill Morgan learned how to use specialized drafting tools in the 1840s, his professional-grade compass precisely centered measurements for foundations and steam engines. His mastery of these tools led to a future of vast new possibilities. The strength of his ideas and the success of his inventions took him on a path that led from Lancaster's Factory Village in central Massachusetts to the courts of Europe. In the span of 80 years, Charles would go from living hand to mouth in Shrewsbury, Massachusetts to taking tea at Windsor Castle with the Queen of England.
