Reed had never been big on Christmas, but when he met Mindy—the beautiful mother-to-be who had so little yet gave so much—he became a believer. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rolling Down Black Stockings is a personal recollection of Esther Royer Ayers's youth spent in a highly restrictive and confined religious community. Her story is as much a search for identity and a longing for a mother's love as it is a tale about a totalitarian culture that led to her departure from the Old Order Mennonite religion. This poignant story is told in three books: book 1 describes her youth in a farm community on the outskirts of Columbiana, Ohio; book 2 follows the struggles of Ayers as she tries to fit in with another culture after leaving the church when her family moves to Akron, Ohio; and book 3 discusses the history and cultural dynamics of the religion. Ayers recounts how the Old Order Mennonite Church came into existence. Her personal account begins when she was eight years old, watching as her mother took care of her sick father. With intel-ligence and insight, Ayers describes how her family coped with the burden of not having enough income, which meant that the children were expected to work instead of getting an education. her Mennonite community, Ayers relates her difficulties trying to fit in at the public school and how she and her siblings were required to fall classes so that they would be expelled. It concludes with reflections on what all this meant to her. A rare and moving memoir, Rolling Down Black Stockings is also a valuable piece of social history that will appeal to historians as well as those interested in separatist communities and women's studies.

Book excerpt: As a child, Nathan Graham was convinced he would one day lead a worry-free existence filled with independence and acclaim. Unfortunately for him, his goals have yet to be realized. In his collection of humorous essays, Graham shares stories from a life paved with weird and quirky characters, including suicidal survivalists; hollow celebrity look-alikes; meandering men of God; and hapless, blathering fools. Graham begins with the story of his first whippin' at age five, when he was lured into the sinful experience of climbing a tree all for the sake of securing a few immoral licks of a peppermint candy cane. With a fresh and only slightly jaded voice, Graham shares an unforgettable, amusing glimpse into a unique coming-of-age journey, in which he quickly learned compassion, consolation, manners, card tricks, retribution, and how to foxtrot. But it is only after deep reflection that he realizes the biggest lesson of all: Tolerance. The Heartbreak of Conversation and Why Men Should Never Wear Pretty Stockings offers one man's laugh-out-loud reflections as he discovers the real keys to success: A clear conscience, a healthy demeanor, and the willingness to always look at the funny side of life.

Coraghessan Boyle's wickedly comic look at turn-of-the-century fanatics in search of the magic pill to prolong their lives--or the profit to be had from manufacturing it. Brimming with a Dickensian cast of characters and laced with wildly wonderful plot twists, Jane Smiley in the New York Times Book Review called The Road to Wellville "A marvel, enjoyable from beginning to end."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Witchcraft in Europe in Middle Ages and Early Modern Period was believed to be a combination of sorcery and heresy. While sorcery attempts to produce negative supernatural effects through formulas and rituals, heresy is the Christian contribution to witchcraft in which an individual makes a pact with the Devil. In addition, heresy denies witches the recognition of important Christian values such as baptism, salvation, Christ and sacraments. In Early Modern European tradition, witches were stereotypically, though not exclusively, women. European pagan belief in witchcraft was associated with the goddess Diana and dismissed as "diabolical fantasies" by medieval Christian authors. Witch-hunts first appeared in large numbers during the 14th and 15th centuries. It was commonly believed that individuals with power and prestige were involved in acts of witchcraft and even cannibalism.
