Book excerpt: This is a very special novel that sparkles with the same memorable writing that made ROOTS an American classic. This is the story of Fletcher Randall, a nineteen-year-old from North Carolina whose politically powerful father is a plantation owner, and, of course, a slave owner. The time is 1855, and all Fletcher Randall knows and believes about slavery he's learned from his father. But Fletcher goes to school up North, and one or two of his Princeton classmates talk about how wrong slavery is until Fletcher begins to think for himself --and he becomes a traitor to his background, to his family, by conspiring to aid in a mass escape of slaves on the Underground Railroad. His partner in this plan is a black slave by the name of Harpin' John, a man who plays the harmonica so sweetly it could make a grown man cry. Christmas Eve is the secret date set for the escape. How these two men of such incredibly opposing backgrounds join together to achieve the goal of freedom makes A Different Kind of Christmas soar with unforgettable inspiration. This is a timeless tale of spiritual regeneration, moral courage, and powerful humanness, meaningful and memorable to readers of all faiths and all ages.

Book Synopsis A Different Kind Of Weather by : William Waldegrave
Download or read book A Different Kind Of Weather written by William Waldegrave and published by Constable. This book was released on 2015-03-05 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Why did you go into politics in the first place?' A question that former Cabinet minister has found himself asked, and indeed asking himself, over the years, Lord Waldegrave's is a life lived through politics. The youngest of seven children, and the son of an earl, Waldegrave's quintessentially English upbringing would go on to shape the course of his life, instilling in him a sense of independence and self-discipline needed to steel one for a successful career in government. Formative years spent at Eton, Oxford and Harvard fortified his resolve to enter the political establishment, and by the early seventies he finally achieved his greatest ambition. As an fearless young Conservative politician in the seventies and eighties, one who witnessed the fall of Heath and the triumph and eventual decline of Thatcher, Waldegrave was firmly at the heart of one of the most exciting and tumultuous periods of modern British history. However just as his star was in the ascent, Waldegrave became embroiled in a scandal which tarnished his reputation, but could not dampen his voracious enthusiasm for the political game. An unembroidered account of the narcotic effect of politics from one of the most fiercely intellectual governmental figures of the modern age, A Different Kind of Weather is a beautifully weighted memoir of political success and failure, and the passing of an era. A Spectator Book of the Year - 'refreshingly and engagingly candid' (Jane Ridley)
Book Synopsis What a Life! a Different Kind of Biography by : Nelson Herbert LaFountain
Download or read book What a Life! a Different Kind of Biography written by Nelson Herbert LaFountain and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2020-11-15 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Herein are printed stories and poems I have written over the years in my own way of telling my story. Rather than an autobiography I thought this may be a better way of presenting one’s life rather than in one mundane book. I began with a book and then I found I like to present my life this way. These are truthful works and not fiction. Some had memory “holes” that needed filling, who said what, or who I gave credit to but nothing that would take away from the story. It’s just the way I tell my life. After all, my life has been a series of short stories and poems not one continuous biography or even one long story. I tried to keep them truthful at all times. My poetry is not the deep thinking style but happenings in poetry form. I hope you enjoy it. The Chapter numbers are assigned to the places I lived when the stories happened, not necessarily in the order that they happened. You will find the stories and poems are not numbered. I began writing short stories and poems before I started my book. Then after a few stories, I figured it would be a good way to write a book. So this is it, for good or ill and I am not an author with an extensive vocabulary by any stretch of the imagination, I hope you’ll forgive that. They, so I’m told, are quite interesting and easy reading. Take them like vitamins, one or two a day. I hope you will laugh and cry and enjoy! The stories, poems, musings and thoughts in this book, are the product of but not limited to, a lifetime of memories, love, life, pain and laughter. It is a labor of love in an effort to sing the praises of those that deserve it the most, and not for the writer. For it was the people that this work was dedicated to that I have to thank for almost all the memories. If it weren’t for the people, there would be absolutely no need for writing this book.

Book Synopsis A Different Kind of Ethnography by : Denielle Elliott
Download or read book A Different Kind of Ethnography written by Denielle Elliott and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2017-01-01 with total page 158 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Produced by members of the Centre for Imaginative Ethnography, this collection introduces the idea of an imaginative and creative approach to anthropological inquiry, one that is collaborative, open-ended, embodied, affective, and experimental. Rather than structuring the book around traditional methods like interviewing, participant observation, and documentary research, the authors organize their thoughts around different methodologies--sensing, walking, writing, performing, and recording. As well, innovative, practical exercises are included that allow ethnographers to not just 'talk the talk', but also 'walk the walk' so they can deepen, complicate, and extend ethnographic inquiry. A list of additional resources at the end of each chapter provide rich support for those who want to pursue more imaginative and creative methodologies."--
Book Synopsis The Violets Are Mine by : Lester Morris
Download or read book The Violets Are Mine written by Lester Morris and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2011-10-10 with total page 355 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Violets Are Mine Previous Title – “The Green Penny-Farthing Bike” What others are saying about “The Violets Are Mine” “ The saga of an English boy begins with a child who is beaten by caretakers who ran the orphanages during the 30’s and 40’s in England. You will laugh and you will cry, but you will be captivated with the book and will not be able to put it down. It speaks to growing up without a home and the love of a family. It is written as Lester speaks, and does what many an author cannot do, it speaks from the heart. This is a success story about the trials of Lester, about the penny-farthing bike experience and the fun of a child, about life—but something more than that! A lot of things happen to successful people; but it just doesn’t happen by chance to Lester. He tells it as he sees it, and his success comes from his love of life, his wife Val, and the many people who come into contact with Lester—a truly unforgettable character. Read the book – you will be a better person for it!” – Pat Tucker “Lester paints scenes that come alive in amazing detail. I love the misadventures and the humor.” Cindy Jones “The Violets Are Mine is reminiscent of Charles Dickens or “Angela’s Ashes” but he added a twist – a much needed sense of humor.” Denniger Bolton
