Download or read book Verb Classification in Australian Languages written by William B. McGregor and published by Walter de Gruyter. This book was released on 2013-06-10 with total page 560 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book deals with systems of verb classification in Australian Aboriginal languages, with particular focus on languages of the north-west. It proposes a typology of the systems according to their main formal and semantic characteristics. It also makes some proposals concerning the historical origins and grammaticisation of these systems, and suggestions regarding the grammatical relations involved. In addition, an attempt is made to situate the phenomenon of verb classification within the context of related verbal phenomena such as serial verb constructions, nominal incorporation, and complex predicates.

Book Synopsis The Oxford Guide to Australian Languages by : Claire Bowern
Download or read book The Oxford Guide to Australian Languages written by Claire Bowern and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2023-06-06 with total page 1179 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Oxford Guide to Australian Languages is a wide-ranging reference work that explores the more than 550 traditional and new Indigenous languages of Australia. Australian languages have long played an important role in diachronic and synchronic linguistics and are a vital testing ground for linguistic theory. Until now, however, there has been no comprehensive and accessible guide to the their vast linguistic diversity. This volume fills that gap, bringing together leading scholars and junior researchers to provide an up-to-date guide to all aspects of the languages of Australia. The chapters in the book explore typology, documentation, and classification; linguistic structures from phonology to pragmatics and discourse; sociolinguistics and language variation; and language in the community. The final part offers grammatical sketches of a selection of languages, sub-groups, and families. At a time when the number of living Australian languages is significantly reduced even compared to twenty year ago, this volume establishes priorities for future linguistic research and contributes to the language expansion and revitalization efforts that are underway.

Download or read book Nhanda written by Juliette Blevins and published by University of Hawaii Press. This book was released on 2001-07-31 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents the first detailed sketch grammar of Nhanda, a Pama-Nyungan language of the central coast of Western Australia presently on the verge of extinction. This language was once spoken along the lower Murchison River, from Kalbarri inland, and south to present-day Northampton and Geraldton, but has remained largely unknown until recent years. Nhanda is based on the author's fieldwork in Western Australia from 1993 to 1998 with one of the last speakers of the language, and also incorporates notes of early explorers and linguists who passed through the area. The grammar presents the general features of the language within the Australian context, followed by a comprehensive study of Nhanda sound patterns, major sections on nominal and verbal morphology, and descriptions of simple sentences and constituent order. Each chapter is rich in data and provides comparative evidence with important implications for historical relationships between the languages of Australia. The volume also includes Nhanda-English and English-Nhanda alphabetical vocabularies and an alphabetical list of Nhanda affixes.
Book Synopsis Archaeology and Linguistics by : Patrick McConvell
Download or read book Archaeology and Linguistics written by Patrick McConvell and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page 488 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book brings together exciting new work in archaeology, linguistics and genetics to reveal a varied and dynamic view of Australia's Aboriginal past, and its place in the prehistory of the Pacific region. Each discipline provides some pieces of the jigsaw: put these together and a fullerpicture emerges. To the dates and excavations of archaeology we can fit linguistic models of cultural contact and spread, and genetic evidence for past patterns of marriage and migration. Alll three disciplines point to sweeping changes in the mid-Holocene, linked to expansion of the Pama-Nyunganlanguage family over most of the continent. The book includes introductory chapters surveying the methods and current state of knowledge in each contributing discipline as well as sections dealing with regional patterns within Australia; culture contact; the Pama-Nyungan question; and the broaderAsia-Pacific perspective
