Book excerpt: In this dissertation, I study the diachronic development of passive construction from Archaic Chinese to Modern Mandarin. I classify the passive forms into two major groups: 1) the monoclausal passive. 2) the biclausal passive. I propose that the monoclausal passive is similar to English-type passive constructions in that they involve a defective passive light verb. This type of passive can be traced back to the JIAN passive in Archaic Chinese. The Middle Chinese agentless BEI passive and Modern Mandarin short passive have the same structure as the JIAN passive. These three constructions can be viewed as three manifestations of a same recurring pattern. The biclausal passive developed from the Archaic Chinese WEI construction, which I analyze as a copula construction. The WEI construction was later reanalyzed as the WEI...SUO passive in Middle Chinese. I propose that the WEI...SUO passive has the same structure as the Modern Mandarin long passive. I propose that the dichotomy of Mandarin Chinese passive constructions can be naturally traced back to their Archaic Chinese sources. Their distinct sources and diachronic developments endowed them with different syntactic properties. They developed independently along two distinct lines. These two distinct lines of development, however, are shown to be governed by the same principles in Minimalist Syntax.

Book excerpt: This is the first book in Chinese linguistics which discusses the grammar of a dialect group, in this case the Xiang dialect spoken in Hunan, from both a synchronic and diachronic prespective. The author uses new data and new frameworks to present her analysis. The synchronic part covers contemporary grammar across localities within the Xiang-speaking area by using the methods and theories of comparative and typological linguistics. The diachronic analysis reconstructs earlier grammatical systems based mainly on modern data but also on historical written records, and analyses the development of the syntactic systems of the Xiang dialects, adopting the methods and theories of historical linguistics and grammaticalization. The discussions in this book raise new issues on dialect research which have not yet been fully acknowledged by Chinese dialectologists. The author shows, for example, how the earlier layers of grammar may be reconstructed on the basis of modern data, and how the path of grammaticalization of functional words may be traced. The discussions reveal that the Xiang dialect group forms a transitional zone between northern and southern dialects. The syntactic constructions in these two areas often co-exist or are mingled in Xiang. Thus, the grammatical constructions in different localities of the Xiang dialect group often provide a bridge connecting the constructions of northern and southern Chinese, or Modern Chinese and Chinese of earlier periods. This book is of interest to scholars and students who are working on grammar, dialectology, historical linguistics, comparative linguistics, typological linguistics, and grammaticalization, as well as those researchers focusing on language policy, language acquisition, and education.

Abstract: Abstract of thesis entitled On Patient-Subject Construction in Chinese Submitted by He Xiaoling For the degree of Doctor of Philosophy at The University of Hong Kong in October 2005 The aim of this thesis is to achieve a better understanding of the Patient-Subject Construction (PSC) in Chinese through an investigation of its syntax and semantics. Typical examples of PSCs include 那封信早就写好了('That letter has already been written a long time ago.') or 绳子拉上去了('The rope has been pulled up.'), which have a patient in subject position but no passive marking on the verb or other parts of the sentence. For a construction as widely used and commonly seen as the PSC, the amount of knowledge about it and the quantity of scholarly attention that has been given to it are surprisingly small. Previous researchers have adopted two exactly opposite viewpoints. Those who give priority to meanings see it as a 'notional passive'. Others who regard form as the more important factor treat it as a sub-class of SVO sentences. From this 'either-form-or-function circle' there seemed little hope of escape. In this thesis, a new approach is used, one in which consideration is given equally to both form and function, and especially to the interaction between them. First a historical survey was made, which provided a diachronic background to the subsequent synchronic study. From this survey it was seen that the PSC was one of the oldest and most stable grammatical patterns of the language. Next, three theoretically possible accounts of the PSC have been considered: as topicalization; as passive; as ergative construction, but each was found to be inadequate in one way or another. A corpus of some 2000 instances of PSCs are collected and studied in detail, resulting in several generalizations about its variety of forms and functions as they were found in the language. The theory of Construction Grammar is brought in to elucidate the relationship between the PSC and other constructions, as well as between different sub-types of PSCs. Finally, the PSC was placed in a typological context. Through comparisons and contrasts with cross-linguistic data and findings, it became clear that the PSC is a basic and unmarked construction that comes closer to being a middle than a passive. In conclusion, it was found that a fundamental opposition existed within the Chinese voice system between the active (SVO) and the middle (PSC), and that the real passive (i.e. the bei-construction), being marked and less stable, was historically a subsequent development from the PSC. While there have been extensive studies on the interplay between the syntax and semantics of GIVE in many languages, not much has been done in a similar manner on Cantonese, a member of the Yue dialect group of the Chinese language family. This monograph reports on the study of GIVE and its associated functions and syntactic constructions in Cantonese from diachronic, synchronic, and typological perspectives. Drawing on cross-linguistic data, and 19th century Cantonese dialect materials, this study first traces the chronological development of the various functions played by GIVE in Cantonese. It then examines the double-object construction. Besides the typological features of this construction in Cantonese, this study investigates the use of the northern pattern in Cantonese as a result of the increasing influence of Putonghua and Modern Standard Chinese by means of a sociolinguistic survey with 40 native speakers of Cantonese.
