Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Shock wave-boundary-layer interaction (SBLI) is a fundamental phenomenon in gas dynamics that is observed in many practical situations, ranging from transonic aircraft wings to hypersonic vehicles and engines. SBLIs have the potential to pose serious problems in a flowfield; hence they often prove to be a critical - or even design limiting - issue for many aerospace applications. This is the first book devoted solely to a comprehensive, state-of-the-art explanation of this phenomenon. It includes a description of the basic fluid mechanics of SBLIs plus contributions from leading international experts who share their insight into their physics and the impact they have in practical flow situations. This book is for practitioners and graduate students in aerodynamics who wish to familiarize themselves with all aspects of SBLI flows. It is a valuable resource for specialists because it compiles experimental, computational and theoretical knowledge in one place.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The three dimensional shock wave turbulent boundary layer interaction generated by several shock generators defined solely by angles has been carried out at a Mach number of 3. Interactions with thin boundary layers were used to obtain overall characteristics, while interactions with thick boundary layers permitted detailed high resolution surveys. Investigations of the interactions were carried out by mean and high frequency surface pressure distribution measurements, surface flow visualization, and mean total head, yaw, and static pressure distributions through the flowfield. Major new data sets were obtained for the interaction of the shock wave generated by a 20 deg fin, and by a 24 deg wedge swept at 60 deg to the incoming flow. A series of tests were carried out to examine new concepts of three-dimensional interactions and extensive 'non-steady' results were obtained from the high frequency surface pressure distributions. Close coordination of the experiments with major computational efforts, support new concepts of flow structure and physics for these complex interactions. Keywords: Three-dimensional shock wave interactions; Conical similarity; Scaling laws; Conical/cylindrical boundary; Unsteady flow; Non-steady characteristics; flow physics and modeling; Supersonic characteristics.

Book excerpt: Tabulated data from a series of experimental studies of the interaction of a shock wave with a turbulent boundary layer in axisymmetric flow configurations is presented. The studies were conducted at the walls of circular wind tunnels and on the cylindrical centerbody of an annular flow channel. Detailed pitot pressure profiles and wall static pressure profiles upstream of, within and downstream of the interaction region are given. Results are presented for flows at nominal freestream Mach Numbers of 2, 3 and 4. For studies at the tunnel sidewalls, the shock waves were produced by conical shock generators mounted on the centerline of the wind tunnel at zero angle of attack. The annular ring generator was used to produce the shock wave at the centerbody of the annular flow channel. The effects of boundary layer bleed were examined in the investigation. Both bleed rate and bleed location were studied. Most of the bleed studies were conducted with bleed holes drilled normal to the wall surface but the effects of slot suction were also examined. A summary of the principal results and conclusions is given.

Book excerpt: Basic experimental research was conducted in two and three-dimensional shock wave/boundary layer interactions and associated turbulence measurements. The primary emphasis has been in exploring the important but little-known range of three-dimensional interactions at high speeds. Building on previous work, a series of parametric experiments and a detailed analysis have led to the synthesis of scaling laws for Reynolds number effects on these interactions. Further experiments continued the adaptation and use of hot-wire anemometry in high-Reynolds number supersonic flows. Hot-wire surveys were made in the previously-explored flowfield of a reattaching free shear layer, and in the interaction generated by a two-dimensional compression corner of 8 deg deflection angle at Mach 3. Other research activities, including technique, instrumentation, and facility development are summarized in this report.

Book excerpt: This report presents the results of a study of seven flows involving the interaction between a normal shock wave and a two-dimensional turbulent boundary layer. The measurements were made at free-stream Mach numbers of 1.3, 1.4 and 1.5 and at Reynolds numbers based on an effective streamwise run of 10 to 30-million. The results were obtained from comprehensive traverses with both pilot and static probes. Standard boundary-layer integral parameters based on wall and measured static pressures are presented, together with velocity profiles and the Mach number distribution over the interaction region. An investigation has been made of the 'law of the wall' and the 'law of the wake' under the influence of strong normal pressure gradients.
