Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book represents the final stage in the Society's quest to present the complete story of British locomotive standardisation to culminate in the twelve BR Standard designs that totalled 999 engines. This final publication covers a number of topics and using papers from the Mr. R. Bond and Mr. G. Dow collections the book asks whether the Standard project was required and what happened to it, how the locomotive works of the UK handled repairs and developments of various locomotive types including comparison of Standards with existing designs. There are sections on the naming policy adopted in regard to specifically Britannias, how the shed and shed code system had developed but in particular with reference to dealing with the Standard classes. A further lengthy section deals with Locomotive Performance and shows various comparisons with other locomotive types. More repair tables have been provided following feedback from earlier volumes and inevitably this book provides a list of amendments and correction to the previous four volumes. In a major departure for the society this book features all colour photographs of Standard locomotives in traffic, many not seen in print before. This volume represents the comprehensive conclusion to the series and draws a line under many questions asked about the Standards.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After WWII the existing railway companies were all put into the control of the newly formed British Transport Commission and that government organization spawned British Railways, which came into being on 1st January 1948. The railway infrastructure had suffered badly during the war years and most of the steam locomotives were 'tired' and badly maintained and or life expired. Although the management of British Railways was already planning to replace steam power with diesel and electric engines/units they still took a decision to build more steam locomotives (as a stop gap). Some 999 (yes just 1 short) Standard locomotives were built in 12 classes ranging from super powerful express and freight engine to suburban tank locomotives. The locomotives were mainly in good order when the order came in 1968 to end steam, some only 8 years old. There still exists a fleet of 46 preserved Standards of which 75% are in working order in and around the UKs preserved railways, furthermore 3 new build standard locomotives are proposed. Steam fans who were around in the 1960s all remember the 'Standards'.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seven friends recall the days when steam power was king in Yorkshire, England. The Golden Age of Yorkshire Steam and Beyond includes a wealth of unique memories and experiences from a collection of railway enthusiasts, who in their youth were fascinated by the steam locomotives that ruled the rails. Discover what it was like growing up in York and experiencing the sights and sounds of the giants of the former LNER system, including A4s, A3s, A2s, A1s and V2s, along with the Jubilees, the Royal Scots, and Black Fives of the former LMS system and the BR Standards. Explore life on the footplate of the engines allocated to Royston shed, right up to the end of steam. Read about the push and pull service that ran from Cudworth - Barnsley - Cudworth across the iconic Oaks Viaduct, as well as the Barnsley - Doncaster and York - Doncaster - Darlington journeys. Memories of Leeds, Normanton, Doncaster, Wath and Penistone are also included, in addition to shed layout drawings of Royston, Doncaster and York. Providing a fascinating insight into a railway system now long gone, the book is designed to ignite the memories of anyone who enjoyed the thrill of trainspotting during the 1950s and early 1960s, when steam was still king, before the rapid introduction of diesel and electric traction led to the complete elimination of steam from the rail network in 1968, with the exception of Flying Scotsman. The 1970s saw the return of steam on the mainline with steam specials powered by preserved locomotives. “All the authors have grown up with the sights and sounds of London North Eastern Region (LNER) giants, the former London, Midland Scottish (LMS) system and the British Railways Standard locomotives. The book will surely ignite the memories of anyone who enjoyed the thrill of trainspotting during the aforementioned years. The introduction of diesel and electric traction during 1968 led to the complete elimination of steam locomotives apart from those now preserved.” —Doncaster Family History Society

This book was released on 1998 with total page 154 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of photographs covers British Railways Standard designs and ex-War department Austerity locomotives purchased by British Railways during the landmark year of 1955. Following nationalisation, a new range of BR standard designs was announced, and these were awaited with anticipation. In January 1951 the first of the Britannia class was completed at Crewe; later no. 70004 William Shakespeare was displayed at the Festival of Britain on London's South Bank. Though initially not particularly well recieved by some enginemen used to more traditional designs, the Britannia soon proved themselves and were used extensively to serve East Anglia and in their early years the Southern Region. As more were elivered they spread to all regions. The East Coast main line used Gresley and other Pacifics until the early 1960s when they became a regular sight at King's Cross. Later these engines became threatened by new forms of motive power here and elsewhere.
