Book excerpt: Author's abstract: Principals of elementary schools continue to be required to perform many duties which include administrative and instructional tasks. The increased accountability for all students to achieve, including the lower achieving students, has made principals focus on their leadership behaviors and practices. Researchers of various studies on principal leadership behaviors and student achievement have found that leadership behaviors make a difference in the academic achievement for all students. Researchers also found that the principals most important role is that of an instructional leader. Principals leading elementary schools with at risk learners may assist them academically when effective strategies, programs, and organizational structures are present within the school. The demands and the complexity of the role of the principal in the 21st century make the principals job a hard task, especially when leading schools with majority at-risk students. The legislation of the No Child Left Behind (NCLB) Act of 2001 obligates elementary principals to reflect on their best leadership behaviors and practices to encourage all students to succeed. Using a qualitative, phenomenological research design, the researcher explored the common leadership behaviors of six Georgia elementary principals of high 2 performing, high poverty schools. The phenomenological research design was appropriate for this study because it provided a means for exploring the lived experiences of the elementary principals leadership behaviors in a high performing, high poverty school. The collection of data was obtained from interviews, school observation, and school artifacts. Six common themes and patterns emerged from the qualitative research study: (1) monitoring of teachers educating at-risk learners, (2) gathering and analyzing student achievement data, (3) instructional decision making using a leadership team approach, (4) appropriate use of reading resources and materials, (5) a positive school climate, and (6) an effective staff of teachers. The six common themes and patterns were identified as common leadership behaviors of Georgia elementary principals from high performing, high poverty schools.

Research supports the relationship of leadership styles, school climate and student achievement does exist and this study identified and explored how it exists between the school principals' leadership style and school climate. Participants consisted of elementary principals and teachers in an urban school district within the southeastern region of the United States. The purpose of this study was to determine the existence of a relationship between elementary school principals' leadership styles and school climate in an urban school district. Survey instruments were the Leader Behavior Description Questionnaire (LBDQ) Form XII Self and the Organizational Climate Description Questionnaire for elementary schools (OCDQ-RE). Demographic information was gathered from the principals and teachers that were subjects of this research (Table 3 and Appendix C). The following research question was posed: Does a relationship exist between the elementary school principals' leadership style and school climate in an urban school district? Descriptive statistics summarized the data characteristics of the independent variable (principal leadership style) and dependent variable (school climate). The data was analyzed using the Pearson Correlation Coefficient. A Positive linear relationship in climate was found for three different groups. These three groups had a statistically significant correlations coefficient and p-values between the LBDQ-Form XII Self and OCDQ-RE subscales. The school principals must be able to access and evaluate the impact they may have on the climate of the school. This study proposed strategies school principals from the participating school district can use to create a more open school climate.

Book excerpt: The purpose of the study was to discover the principal instructional leadership behaviors differed in successful and nonsuccessful urban elementary schools. Six schools were selected and paired according to size, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, and attendance to discover the salient leadership behavior differences between and among them. A descriptive survey research design was utilized to collect data through the Hallinger-Murphy Principal Instructional Management Rating Scale (PIMRS) which assessed frequency of leadership behaviors. Six (100%) of the principals and 95 (49%) teachers responded. The research questions were tested statistically using Analysis of Variance to decipher leadership differences between the pairs of schools and differences of perceived principal behaviors based on teachers' grade levels and teaching experience. The instructional leadership behaviors manifested by the principals in the selected schools were identified through the PIMRS and tested using the .05 confidence level as the measure of significance. The current literature reported that higher frequency of leadership behaviors, such as those identified in the PIMRS, could lead to academically successful schools. The results of this study went against the grain of the current literature since high scores on the PIMRS did not ensure successful schools and provided confoundment rather than clarification. The principals in the paired schools showed few differences in job behavior patterns, yet one school in each pair was academically successful; the other was not. The research questions stated: 1) There are significant differences between the instructional leadership behaviors demonstrated by the principals of schools with high student achievement when compared with the principals of schools with low student achievement; 2) student demographic characteristics (ethnicity, attendance of students, socioeconomic status) influence student success; and 3) there is a difference in teachers' perceptions of principals' instructional leadership behaviors based on their years of teaching experience and grade level taught. The first and third questions were rejected since the data in this study did not support the questions. The second question was not statistically tested due to a lack of difference in the student populations in the schools. Further study and testing of the Ballinger-Murphy Model is required in order to draw final conclusions on the relationship between principal instructional leadership behaviors and student achievement

The purpose of this investigation studied the extent of school leadership behaviors and or characteristics that contribute to student achievement. This study was designed to identify the relationship between the behaviors of the school leader and student achievement. The study determined if teachers and principals perceptions of leadership behaviors contribute to student achievement. More specifically, this investigation was designed to study the behaviors and practices of elementary principals as it relates to student achievement in elementary school students in a large urban school district. Sixty-three elementary teachers and six principals were selected for this study. The six principals were apart of the focus group interview. Data was collected through teacher and principal surveys, audio-taped interviews and transcriptions. SPSS 13.0 was selected as a means to interpret and analyze data. 2 The results of the study support the literature and indicate that principal leadership is critical to student achievement in elementary school students. More specifically, it raised the question about what specific leadership behaviors are used to increase student achievement. This study further clarified that the principal is the primary person for instituting leadership among all within the school which ultimately contribute to student success. The elementary principal has a demanding and challenging job in and of itself, but by recognizing the leadership behaviors, the principal can influence the climate, productivity, effectiveness of their school and ultimately student achievement.

In-depth study of a principal's leadership, within the context of a highly challenged, high-performing elementary school helped to deepen the understanding of specific instructional and/or transformational behaviors and practices that instigated and sustained organizational change efforts where they were needed most. This qualitative study sought to understand how the principal of a high-achieving urban elementary school facilitated and managed fundamental changes in the schools learning culture. The study investigated one urban elementary school's efforts to implement a structured, school-wide educational reform focused on improving learning results for all students at the school. The researcher examined the reforms through case study methods, employing critical incidents interview techniques, individual and focus interviews, observations of key reform-focused meetings and activities, and analysis of various relevant artifacts. Focus groups with teachers, individual interviews with the principal and 12 additional stakeholders from across the school, observations, and document analysis comprised the main sources of data in this study. The researcher used constant comparative method to analyze the data gathered and determine emerging categories, themes, and patterns. Findings suggest how the principal of a now high-achieving urban elementary school reinvented her role as principal, instituted new norms of collaboration, ensured universally high expectations for all, and provided data-informed, job-embedded professional development, as means to overcome obstacles and improve student outcomes and achievement. Now more than ever, urban principals are challenged to understand and apply these key leadership behaviors and practices in order to build productive learning cultures for teachers and students at their schools.

The purpose of this investigation of teacher's perceptions of principal's leadership behavior and student achievement (reading) was to explore those factors of principal's leader behaviors that differentiate low achieving and high achieving schools as perceived by teachers. Sample. Two hundred sixty-one teachers in seven selected northeast Ohio school district and seventeen buildings participated in this study. Teachers in this study had at least three years of experience and one or more years of supervision from the principals whose leadership behavior they described. Instrument. The revised Leader Behavior Description Questionnaire Form XII was used. This instrument measured only four subscales, consideration Initiating Structure, Persuasion and Superior Orientation. This instrument was used to explore answer to five research questions. Findings. The study results did not support the premise that the leader behavior task structure differentiated effective from ineffective schools. Teachers in both groups of schools perceived that principals exhibited this characteristic. However, the results revealed that the leader behavior, consideration, did differ at the .05 level of significance as perceived by teachers between principals in high and low achieving schools. The data also showed that discrepancy existed between principals self perception and teacher perceptions of the leader behavior, superior orientation at the .05 level of significance. The data also revealed that the level of staff involvement, such as awareness, implementation, and curricular focus was more evident in low achieving than in high achieving schools. Conclusion. The investigation concluded that there is substantial need for further exploration of the leadership variable. An important recommendation is that additional research be initiated using the LBDQ and other research instruments as a strategy to consistently operationalize the leadership characteristics of Effective Schools Movement.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this multi-case study was to examine if there may be a perceived relationship between the size of the school and the leadership behaviors of the four principals. This purpose was achieved through a qualitative inquiry of principal interviews, principal survey, observation of a principals' leadership team meeting, focus group interview with the principals' leadership team, and analysis of the extant texts: principals' time log for one week, organizational chart, and agenda for a leadership team meeting. The data were reduced through two cycles of coding which then further analyzed resulting in the identification of five major themes. Finding one: All four principals appeared to have six common leadership behaviors that did not appear to be different based on the size of the school. Finding two: All four principals appeared to have six leadership behaviors that looked differently based on the size of the school. Finding three: While all four principals demonstrated their understanding of the need for "being visible with students," "being visible with teachers," "knowing your students," and "knowing your staff," they all recognized that these skills would be easier to develop and execute in a small school compared to a large school. Finding four: The additional behaviors that were present in the leadership behavior of "organizing" in the principals of large schools may have supported additional leadership behaviors in "communicating with students," "communicating with staff," and "developing leaders" in the principals of the large schools. Finding five: The two leadership behaviors of "seeking input" and "setting direction/limits" appeared to counter-balance each other depending on the size of the school. Synthesis of the findings suggest that while there are common leadership behaviors among these four principals, there were also differences in their leadership behaviors that indicated that there may have been a perceived relationship between the size of the school and the leadership behaviors of the four principals. The descriptions of the leadership behaviors of the four participants in this study lend credibility to the argument that leadership does not take place in a vacuum. How leadership is implemented is dependent upon many factors, including the size of the environment.

Book excerpt: This mixed methods descriptive and causal-comparative study investigates what instructional leadership behaviors effective California high school principals have and what their beliefs are in regards to pedagogy, related issues, and professional issues, either constructivist or instructivist in nature, in the environment of the current NCLB accountability era. Differences found in eight specific demographic variables were analyzed in combination with data obtained from principals' responses on the Principal Instructional Management Rating Scale (PIMRS) and the Principal Beliefs Survey (PBS, a variation of the Teacher Beliefs Survey). The population comprised of principals whose schools have met their API growth targets for two consecutive school years school wide and for socioeconomically disadvantaged, English learner subgroups. A volunteer rate of 51% (N = 36) was obtained from a population of 71. Results indicate that effective high school principals frequently engaged in instructional leadership behaviors. Concerning pedagogy, principals held eclectic beliefs, but were united in the beliefs of accountability and the importance of a prescriptive, well designed curriculum. Subjects' gender, ethnicity, and the percentage of instructional leadership delegated were not significantly different in regards to principals' instructional leadership practices or pedagogical beliefs. Significant differences were found among a few specific instructional leadership practices and pedagogical beliefs based on subjects' education level, overall years as a classroom teacher, subject taught as a teacher, overall years as the current principal, and overall years of administrative experience. From the findings, a contingency model of principals' pedagogical beliefs was developed. Additionally, reliability testing was performed on both instruments.
