Book excerpt: This book provides a summary of results from the 16th year of the BEACH program, a continuous national study of general practice activity in Australia. From April 2013 to March 2014, 959 general practitioners recorded details of 95,900 GP-patient encounters, at which patients presented 148,880 reasons for encounter and 151,675 problems were managed. For an 'average' 100 problems managed, GPs recorded: 65 medications (including 53 prescribed, seven supplied to the patient and six advised for over-the-counter purchase); 12 procedures; 24 clinical treatments (advice and counselling); six referrals to specialists and three to allied health services; orders for 31 pathology tests and seven imaging tests. A subsample study of more than 31,000 patients suggests prevalence of measured risk factors in the adult (18 years and over) population who attended general practice at least once in 2013-14 were: obesity-27%; overweight-35%; daily smoking-17%; at-risk alcohol consumption-26%. One in four people in the attending population had at least two of these risk factors. A companion publication, A decade of Australian general practice activity 2004-05 to 2013-14 is also available.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Highly acclaimed in its first three editions, McWhinney's Textbook of Family Medicine is one of the seminal texts in the field. While many family medicine texts simply cover the disorders a practitioner might see in clinical practice, McWhinney's defines the principles and practices of family medicine as a separate and distinct field of practice. The fourth edition presents six new clinical chapters of common problems in family medicine: respiratory illness, musculoskeletal pain, depression, diabetes, obesity and multimorbidity. This new edition also provides information on stewardship of resources, patient information and data, delivery of care in the home, and consultation and referral. The volume also covers continuing advances in the research base of family medicine. Readers will come away with a deeper appreciation for the role of the generalist in healthcare.

Book excerpt: This stimulating volume examines the many faces of Australia’s ageing population, the social and health issues they contend with, and the steps being taken—and many that should be taken—to help ensure a more positive and productive later life. Individual and societal ageing are conceptualized as developmental in nature, socially diverse, and marked by daily life challenges stemming from the country’s economic structures, attitudes, geography, political landscape, and infrastructure. Wide-ranging coverage (e.g., health, inequalities, employment, transportation) assesses options available to older people, and the role of families, employers, service providers, government agencies, and others in promoting or expanding those choices. The book’s double emphasis on challenges in older people’s lives and opportunities for enhancing their quality of life is on clear display as case studies examine policy issues—and propose solutions—in a societal and individual context. Included in the coverage: · Australian developments in ageing: issues and history. · Cultural diversity, health, and ageing. · Indigenous Australians and ageing: responding to diversity in policy and practice. · Enhancing the health and employment participation of older workers. · Housing and the environments of ageing. · Health services and care for older people. The rich examples in Ageing in Australia contain a depth of understanding and evidence for sociologists, gerontologists and psychologists studying ageing, health care professionals providing care to older people, and policy analysts assessing areas for improvement.
