Technological advances paved the way for wireless networks being used in many military and civilian applications, including object tracking, security surveillance, habitat monitoring, and traffic control. However, there are intrinsic constraints on design and optimization of sensor networks. Current research mainly focuses on minimizing energy consumption when collecting and transferring data, but improvement is limited by the current sensing paradigm in which users are passive receivers and interpreters of sensory data. A shift is needed from a supplier-initiated, data-centric approach to a consumer-initiated, demand-driven paradigm. This dissertation proposes a Level-Of-Detail (LOD) sensing framework, in which sensing activities are fully determined and adjusted by the user's need for sensory data in real-time. This information-on-demand approach eliminates unnecessary data collection and transfer, and provides an ideal balance between system lifetime, response time, and attention economics. A software test-bed is created for concept proof purpose. The test-bed employs a client-server architecture and allows users to carry out various experiments in an interactive, three-dimensional virtual environment. Experiments results demonstrate substantial reduction in power consumption using the proposed LOD technology.

Book excerpt: Successful tracking of a mobile target with a sensor network requires effective answers to the challenges of uncertainty in the measured data, small latency in acquiring and reporting the tracking information, and compliance with the stringent constraints imposed by the scarce resources available on each sensor node: limited available power, restricted availability of the inter-node communication links, relatively moderate computational power. This thesis introduces the architecture of a hierarchical, self-organizing, two-tier, mission-specific sensor network, composed of sensors and routers, to track the trajectory and velocity of a single mobile target in a two-dimensional convex sensor field. A query-driven approach is proposed to input configuration parameters to the network, which allow sensors to self-configure into regions, and routers into tree-like structures, with the common goal of sensing and tracking the target in an energy-aware manner, and communicating this tracking data to a base station node incurring low-overhead responses, respectively. The proposed algorithms to define and organize the sensor regions, establish the data routing scheme, and create the data stream representing the real-time location/velocity of a target, are heuristic, distributed, and represent localized node collaborations. Node behaviours have been modeled using state diagrams and inter-node collaborations have been designed using straightforward messaging schemes. This work has attempted to establish that by using a query-driven approach to track a target, high-level knowledge can be injected to the sensor network self-organization processes and its following operation, which allows the implementation of an energy-efficient, low-overhead tracking scheme. The resulting system, although built upon simple components and interactions, is complex in extension, and not directly available for exact evaluation. However, it provides intuitively advantageous behaviours.

Book excerpt: "The main research objective of this thesis is to address distributed target tracking for mobile sensor networks. Based on real-life limitations, we are particularly interested in mobile sensors with Limited Sensing Range (LSR). There are three possible multi-target tracking scenarios for n mobile sensors tracking m targets: i) many sensors tracking few targets n ” m (e.g. tracking high-valued targets), ii) a few sensors track many targets n “ m (e.g. the sensor coverage problem and situational awareness in a crowded airport terminal), and iii) swarms of sensors tracking swarms of targets n,m ” 1 (e.g. selflocalization of autonomous vehicles in intellegent transportation systems). First, we show that all three problems can be posed as coupled distributed estimation and control problems for mobile sensor networks. To tackle this estimation and control problem, we propose a unified theoretical framework in which every mobile agent (or sensor) has a two-fold objective: a) maintaining a safe distance (or minimum separation) from neighboring mobile agents during target tracking and b) enhancing the quality of sensed information collectively by the team of sensors to improve the performance of distributed estimation. In many real-life applications, the quality of sensed data is a function of the proximity to the target. We propose an information-theoretic measure for quality of sensed data by each sensor called the information value as the trace of the Fisher Information Matrix (FIM). This metric of quality of sensed data plays a key role in all of our proposed distributed tracking and control algorithms. We show that objective a) of any mobile agent is fundamentally a "collision-avoidance" (or "separation") objective that is a byproduct of flocking behavior for multi-agent systems [48], while objective b) for LSR-type sensors requires solving an additional control problem to enhance the collective information value of the team of agents. We refer to the latter problem as the information-driven control problem. For distributed tracking on mobile networks, we apply Information Filter and Kalman-Consensus Filter (KCF) as effective algorithms for distributed multi-target tracking on networks. The other problem of interest is the formal stability analysis of the coupled distributed estimation and flocking-based mobility-control and self-deployment algorithms for problems i) and ii). We prove that the error dynamics of the KCF and the structural dynamics of the flock of sensors from a cascade nonlinear system and provide a Lyapunov-based stability analysis of case i). We present additional theoretical results on analysis of information-driven control and tracking algoritjms for problems i) and ii) together with successful experimental results. In addition, we identify the key questions regarding problem iii) that remains the subject of ongoing and future research."

Book excerpt: "Target tracking is one of the typical applications of wireless sensor networks: a large number of spatially deployed sensor nodes collaboratively sense, process and estimate the target state (e.g., position, velocity and heading). This thesis aimed to develop the collaborative information processing techniques that jointly address information processing and networking for the distributive estimation of target state in the highly dynamic and resources constrained wireless sensor networks. Taking into account the interplay between information processing and networking, this thesis proposed a collaborative information processing framework. The framework integrates the information processing which is responsible for the representation, fusion and processing of data and information with networking which caters for the formation of network, the delivery of information and the management of wireless channels."--Abstract.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wireless sensor networks are characterized by severe energy constraints, one to many flows and low rate redundant data. Most of the routing algorithms for traditional networks are address centric, and the ad hoc nature of wireless sensor network makes them unsuitable for practical applications. Also the algorithms designed for mobile ad hoc networks are unsuitable for wireless sensor networks due to severe energy constraints that require nodes to perform for months with limited resources, as well as the low data rate which the constraint implies. This thesis examines a model driven data gathering algorithm framework for wireless sensor networks. It was designed with a goal to decrease the overall cost in transmission by lowering the number of messages transmitted in the network. A combination of data- centric and address-centric approaches was used as guidelines during the design process. A shortest path heuristic where intermediate nodes forward interest messages whenever it is of lower cost is one of the heuristics used. Another heuristic used is the greedy incremental approach to build a lower cost tree from a graph with various producers and consumers. A cost division heuristic is used to divide cost of shared path into distinct paths as the path forks in a tree. This thesis analyzes the effects of these heuristics on the performance of the algorithm and how it lowers the overall cost with the addition of each heuristic.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years, advances in signal processing have led to small, low power, inexpensive Wireless Sensor Network (WSN). The signal processing in WSN is different from the traditional wireless networks in two critical aspects: firstly, the signal processing in WSN is performed in a fully distributed manner, unlike in traditional wireless networks; secondly, due to the limited computation capabilities of sensor networks, it is essential to develop an energy and bandwidth efficient signal processing algorithms. Target localisation and tracking problems in WSNs have received considerable attention recently, driven by the necessity to achieve higher localisation accuracy, lower cost, and the smallest form factor. Received Signal Strength (RSS) based localisation techniques are at the forefront of tracking research applications. Since tracking algorithms have been attracting research and development attention recently, prolific literature and a wide range of proposed approaches regarding the topic have emerged. This thesis is devoted to discussing the existing WSN-based localisation and tracking approaches. This thesis includes five studies. The first study leads to the design and implementation of a triangulation-based localisation approach using RSS technique for indoor tracking applications. The presented work achieves low localisation error in complex environments by predicting the environmental characteristics among beacon nodes. The second study concentrates on investigating a fingerprinting localisation method for indoor tracking applications. The proposed approach offers reasonable localisation accuracy while requiring a short period of offline computation time. The third study focuses on designing and implementing a decentralised tracking approach for tracking multiple mobile targets with low resource requirements. Despite the interest in target tracking and localisation issues, there are few systems deployed using ZigBee network standard, and no tracking system has used the full features of the ZigBee network standard. Tracking through the ZigBee is a challenging task when the density of router and end-device nodes is low, due to the limited communication capabilities of end-device nodes. The fourth study focuses on developing and designing a practical ZigBee-based tracking approach. To save energy, different strategies were adopted. The fifth study outlines designing and implementing an energy-efficient approach for tracking applications. This study consists of two main approaches: a data aggregation approach, proposed and implemented in order to reduce the total number of messages transmitted over the network; and a prediction approach, deployed to increase the lifetime of the WSN. For evaluation purposes, two environmental models were used in this thesis: firstly, real experiments, in which the proposed approaches were implemented on real sensor nodes, to test the validity for the proposed approaches; secondly, simulation experiments, in which NS-2 was used to evaluate the power-consumption issues of the two approaches proposed in this thesis.
