Book Synopsis A Custodian of Grammar by : Kristijan Krkac
Download or read book A Custodian of Grammar written by Kristijan Krkac and published by University Press of America. This book was released on 2013-01-22 with total page 311 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The nature of method has always been a topic at the very heart of western philosophical traditions, especially in the 20th century. One of the most influential philosophers of the last century, Ludwig Wittgenstein, changed not just his philosophical standpoint at least twice in his lifetime, but the very method of studying philosophy as well. A Custodian of Grammar discusses Wittgenstein's method in his later period, sometimes referred to as morphology. Krkac explores this topic from the primer of morphology and proceeds to more demanding and complicated topics, such as forms of life and perspicuous presentations. He also examines Wittgenstein's applications of his method, namely to consciousness, perception, and certainty. This book will be of interest to Wittgenstein scholars and to students investigating various philosophical methods of philosophy from the 20th century.

Book Synopsis A grammar of Komnzo by : Christian Döhler
Download or read book A grammar of Komnzo written by Christian Döhler and published by Language Science Press. This book was released on 2019 with total page 468 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Komnzo is a Papuan language of Southern New Guinea spoken by around 250 people in the village of Rouku. Komnzo belongs to the Tonda subgroup of the Yam language family, which is also known as the Morehead Upper-Maro group. This grammar provides the first comprehensive description of a Yam language. It is based on 16 months of fieldwork. The primary source of data is a text corpus of around 12 hours recorded and transcribed between 2010 and 2015. Komnzo provides many fields of future research, but the most interesting aspect of its structure lies in the verb morphology, to which the two largest chapters of the grammar are dedicated. Komnzo verbs may index up to two arguments showing agreement in person, number and gender. Verbs encode 18 TAM categories, valency, directionality and deictic status. Morphological complexity lies not only in the amount of categories that verbs may express, but also in the way these are encoded. Komnzo verbs exhibit what may be called ‘distributed exponence’, i.e. single morphemes are underspecified for a particular grammatical category. Therefore, morphological material from different sites has to be integrated first, and only after this integration can one arrive at a particular grammatical category. The descriptive approach in this grammar is theory-informed rather than theory-driven. Comparison to other Yam languages and diachronic developments are taken into account whenever it seems helpful.
Download or read book Asum Grammar written by Ben Judd and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2008-11-01 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In deference to the wishes of innumerable readers and at fantastic trouble and expense, we are able to here present a collection of extracts from that learned work, long in preparation but still unpublished, treating upon the fascinating but difficult subject of 'Asum Grammar.' Ben Judd's articles on this mysterious if not mythical tome were a wonderful, long-running and well-loved mainstay in the pages of the Evesham Journal. They treat eruditely and humorously on the matter of Asum, the 'language' once peculiar to Evesham. The current book collects together selected articles and, on the basis that too much of a good thing can be too much, intersperses them with snippets on local vocabulary (places, flowers, birds and suchlike) together with odd poems and snippets in Asum from the letters page of the Evesham Journal. The whole is illustrated by some lovely drawings by E.H. New (from 1904) of many local scenes and buildings.

Book Synopsis The Threat of Solipsism by : Jônadas Techio
Download or read book The Threat of Solipsism written by Jônadas Techio and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2020-11-23 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Much attention has been paid to Wittgenstein’s treatment of solipsism and to Cavell’s treatment of skepticism. But comparatively little has been made of the striking connections between the early Wittgenstein’s view on the truth of solipsism and Cavell’s view on the truth of skepticism, and how that relates to the claim that the later Wittgenstein sees privacy as a constant human possibility. This book offers close readings of representative writings by both authors and argues that an adequate understanding of solipsism and skepticism requires taking into account a set of underlying difficulties related to a disappointment with finitude which might ultimately lead to the threat of solipsism. That threat is further interpreted as a wish not to bear the burden of having to constantly negotiate and nurture the fragile connections with the world and others which are the conditions of possibility for finite beings to achieve meaning and community. By presenting Wittgenstein’s and Cavell’s responses in an order which reflects the chronology of their writings, the result is a cohesive articulation of some under-appreciated aspects of their philosophical methodologies which has the potential of reorienting our entire reading of their work.

Book Synopsis A Phoenician-Punic Grammar by : Charles R. Krahmalkov
Download or read book A Phoenician-Punic Grammar written by Charles R. Krahmalkov and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2015-11-02 with total page 333 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Carefully selected examples from texts and dialects of the whole Phoenician-Punic period bring to life the grammatical description of this language. Included are fully vocalized Punic and Neo-Punic inscriptions of Roman Tripolitiana in Latin orthography as well as the literary fragments of Punic drama as found in Plautus' comedy Poenulus. This classical descriptive grammar of the Phoenician-Punic language (1200 BCE - 350 CE) presents the reader with a full picture: its phonology, orthography, morphology, syntax and usage. Its history and its various dialects are dealt with in an introduction. Hebraists and Semitists will find the description of the verbal system of particular interest to them, especially that of the literary language, which holds that tense and aspect reference of a given form of the verb is largely a function of syntax, not morphology. Much of this grammatical material is presented here for the first time.
Book Synopsis Wittgenstein and Heidegger by : David Egan
Download or read book Wittgenstein and Heidegger written by David Egan and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-07-18 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ludwig Wittgenstein and Martin Heidegger are arguably the two most influential philosophers of the twentieth century. Their work not only reshaped the philosophical landscape, but also left its mark on other disciplines, including political science, theology, anthropology, ecology, mathematics, cultural studies, literary theory, and architecture. Both sought to challenge the assumptions governing the traditions they inherited, to question the very terms in which philosophy’s problems had been posed, and to open up new avenues of thought for thinkers of all stripes. And despite considerable differences in style and in the traditions they inherited, the similarities between Wittgenstein and Heidegger are striking. Comparative work of these thinkers has only increased in recent decades, but no collection has yet explored the various ways in which Wittgenstein and Heidegger can be drawn into dialogue. As such, these essays stage genuine dialogues, with aspects of Wittgenstein’s elucidations answering or problematizing aspects of Heidegger’s, and vice versa. The result is a broad-ranging collection of essays that provides a series of openings and provocations that will serve as a reference point for future work that draws on the writings of these two philosophers.
