Book excerpt: An excerpt from the foreword by Joni Eareckson Tada: “With the book you are holding, you have stumbled upon the best of guides. I should know. I first read The Cry of the Soul decades ago when I was still sorting through a lot of hurt and frustration connected with my quadriplegia (yes, I read it on that music stand holding a mouth stick). The Cry of the Soul showed me what to do with my anger and hurt—not stuff it under the carpet of my conscience, or minimize it, but actually do something good with it.” All emotion—whether positive or negative—can give us a glimpse of the true nature of God. We want to control our negative emotions and dark desires. God wants us to recognize them as the cry of our soul to be made right with Him. Beginning with the Psalms, Cry of the Soul explores what Scripture says about our darker emotions and points us to ways of honoring God as we faithfully embrace the full range of our emotional life.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a literary composition composed for those who feel like nobody's listening. For my comrades, my mom and my dad, and my two sisters who showed me what it means to be different. For the drug addicts that fiend but still dream of better conditions, huddled with puddles on pillows with Brillos and pipes, not bathed or slept in days, high as a kite. For the single parents that struggle working doubles, taxing their muscles so their children can comfortably cuddle and sleep at night. For the people looking for peace through the pieces of life, each intricate piece significant in this puzzle of life. I speak for the weak, for the innocent lives that died in the streets. For Kalen, my nephew, and for Kaira, my niece. I'm standing tall for my uncle Paul who died at the homeless shelter in his sleep. For my aunt Vanessa--God bless her; she left us at peace. For hip-hop unlocking the key and making this an option for me. For my ancestors, the investors in this struggle who made it possible for me. For Thomas Edison, for constituting this beautiful medicine for me. For the Almighty, who told him rightly it's only right that we have the freedom to speak. And for giving me this platform as a uniform for community outreach. Through the eyes of a crying soul. My fears have been exposed through the windows of my soul...through the eyes of a crying soul.

Book excerpt: Monica Harris-Day's perfect world begins a downward spiral the afternoon she comes home to find her husband in bed . . . with another man. After confronting Kevin, her husband of two years, Monica discovers he's had a lifelong struggle with homosexuality that began at the age of ten after he was molested by a deacon in the church. For years, Kevin has sought deliverance, crying out to God to make him straight. He explains his deceit by saying that he thought he had truly been delivered when he married Monica, but was afraid to share his past with her for fear she wouldn't marry him. Kevin begs Monica's forgiveness and wants to save their marriage. He is convinced that God has indeed delivered him from the spirit of homosexuality and that the one-time mistake was just his past coming back to haunt him. Their pastor offers them marital counseling, but Monica suspects he's really concerned about maintaining his mega-ministry. The church has grown to 10,000 members since Kevin became the minister of music. When the pastor swears them to secrecy and urges Monica to stay in the marriage, she thinks Bishop Walker isn't willing to risk the potential scandal and church split that would be caused if the truth were leaked to the congregation. My Soul Cries Out is a compassionate look at the issue of Christians struggling with homosexuality and the redemptive power of God to bring deliverance.

Until one day, when Yvonne?s soul cried. She began to see that how she perceived her life and the attitudes she had, were crippling her as much as all her bad habits and the ugly things that happened to her. The realization that through forgiveness of others and most importantly, herself, would prove to be her path to new confidence, new attitude, a joy and love of life and God, and a profound hope that by sharing her story, others may find the courage and strength to do what Yvonne has done.

Book excerpt: The diaries of a remarkable young woman who was determined to live a meaningful and happy life despite her struggle with cystic fibrosis and a rare superbug—from age fifteen to her death at the age of twenty-five—the inspiration for the original streaming documentary Salt in My Soul “An exquisitely nuanced chronicle of a terrified but hopeful young woman whose life was beginning and ending, all at once.”—Los Angeles Times Diagnosed with cystic fibrosis at the age of three, Mallory Smith grew up to be a determined, talented young woman who inspired others even as she privately raged against her illness. Despite the daily challenges of endless medical treatments and a deep understanding that she’d never lead a normal life, Mallory was determined to “Live Happy,” a mantra she followed until her death. Mallory worked hard to make the most out of the limited time she had, graduating Phi Beta Kappa from Stanford University, becoming a cystic fibrosis advocate well known in the CF community, and embarking on a career as a professional writer. Along the way, she cultivated countless intimate friendships and ultimately found love. For more than ten years, Mallory recorded her thoughts and observations about struggles and feelings too personal to share during her life, leaving instructions for her mother to publish her work posthumously. She hoped that her writing would offer insight to those living with, or loving someone with, chronic illness. What emerges is a powerful and inspiring portrait of a brave young woman and blossoming writer who did not allow herself to be defined by disease. Her words offer comfort and hope to readers, even as she herself was facing death. Salt in My Soul is a beautifully crafted, intimate, and poignant tribute to a short life well lived—and a call for all of us to embrace our own lives as fully as possible.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I became a Christian at the early age of seven. Since then, God and I have been inseparable, but this does not mean that I did not struggle and suffer. God chose me at a young age to carry out his purpose and from a young age, even until now I have been an outcast and tossed to the side by people I loved dearly. I have lived through physical violations, insecurities, and verbal abuse. As I grew up, I became walking toxic, so broken and afraid to pick myself up. Pain was all I knew. That is until God told me I had to speak for those like me. It turns out everyone is hurting, looking for solutions. I didn't realize that I had the solution to my problems with me ever since I was a young girl. God showed me how to accept redemption from him so that I could teach others how to live as they walk with Christ. Holding nothing back, I have put my imperfect walk with Christ on display for everyone to see, vulnerability became my strength. Through my unbelief and blessings, God was unchanging. He only wanted to prepare me for his glory. He wants people to understand that his love for all is unshakable. I am merely a vessel given the strength to tell others how I stopped my heart and soul from aching, how I learned to leave my past behind and accept my future as a redeemed being. My pain was left in the forsaken past. I have had brighter days and more are to come. Redemption: For My Crying Soul is about me dealing with my overwhelming pain and misery by embracing God's character.
