This book was released on 2002-07-24 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume describes and critically examines the state of the art in research on achievement motivation in ethnically and culturally diverse groups. The authors address three visible shortcomings in the current literature the problems inherent in decontextualized research, the need to consider culture authentically, and the need to recognize differences within groups. This volume considers the greater insights that come from research that is contextualized, emphasizes individual meaning making, and embraces methods of inquiry that allow for a deep conceptual understanding of the rich and varied ways in which achievement and motivation develop both between and within cultures and contexts of learning. This is the 96th issue of the Jossey-Bass series New Directions for Child and Adolescent Development.

Book Synopsis Motivation and Culture by : Donald Munro
Download or read book Motivation and Culture written by Donald Munro and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-06-11 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although a growing number of researchers emphasize the social and psychocultural aspects of motivation and motivation theory, few books have provided much coverage beyond well-tread studies of physiological and biological factors and theories. Motivation and Culture brings together eighteen writers with a variety of academic backgrounds and cultural experiences to explore the way that culture impinges on motivation. Exploring topics such as personal values and motives, intercultural exchange in the workplace, the intrapsychic process and the nexus between biology and culture, they formulate theories of motivation that can be applied in the modern multicultural world. Contributors include: Dona Lee Davis, Russell Geen, Joan Miller, John Paul Scott, William Wedenoja, Elisa J. Sobo and Stephen Wilson.
Book Synopsis Culture, Motivation and Learning by : Farideh Salili
Download or read book Culture, Motivation and Learning written by Farideh Salili and published by IAP. This book was released on 2007-06-01 with total page 412 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The influence of culture on learning and motivation has been the topic of much research in recent years. Educational and psychological researchers are now aware that the findings of their studies may not apply to other cultures, and that in this age of globalization and multiculturalism it is very important to examine the applicability of psychoeducational constructs to other cultures. Understanding learning and motivational characteristics of students of diverse backgrounds will enable educators to develop appropriate curriculum and teaching strategies to motivate these students. The aim of this book is to present research findings and views of scholars and researchers in the field of motivation and learning, from a multicultural and international perspective. Educators and scholars from different parts of the world have examined recent learning and motivation theories in different cultural contexts in order to explore the dynamics of sociocultural processes affecting student motivation. Others have focused on teaching and learning strategies that are known to be effective with culturally diverse students.
Book Synopsis A Cross Cultural Investigation of Cognitive, Metacognitive and Motivational Factors Affecting Student Achievement by : Jae Hak Jung
Download or read book A Cross Cultural Investigation of Cognitive, Metacognitive and Motivational Factors Affecting Student Achievement written by Jae Hak Jung and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: My goals for this study were to use Structure Equation Modeling (SEM) to: propose a conceptual model based on theoretical frameworks of student motivation variables, use of cognitive strategies, and use of self-regulation strategies affecting student academic performance; statistically examine each of the structural relationships among the above variables on student achievement; and, test for cultural differences between American and Korean community college students on the measurement model, factor means, and structure model. These SEM results provided support for four research hypotheses: (a) Students' reported motivational variable scores had significantly positive effects on students' reported use of self-regulation strategies for both the American and Korean community college students; (b) Students' reported motivational variable scores had significantly positive effects on students' reported use of cognitive strategies for both the American and Korean community college students; (c) Students' reported motivational variable scores significantly positively predicted students' academic achievement for both the American and Korean community college students; (d) Students' reported use of cognitive strategies was positively related to students' reported use of self-regulation strategies for both the American and Korean community college students. However, these results did not provide statistical support for the four research hypotheses; (e) Students' reported use of cognitive strategies did not significantly predict students' academic achievement in the overall model for both the American and Korean community college students; (f) Student's reported use of learning skills strategies did not significantly predict students' academic achievement in the overall model for both American and Korean community college students. Based on the results of the current study, many future studies can be suggested. First of all, future studies need to have various measurements to assess student academic achievement. GPA is only one measure for students' academic achievement or success. Future research should consider alternative measurements such as peer or teacher evaluation, students' satisfaction, problem-solving ability in the context of the course student are taking, ability to transfer and so on. If research includes more alternative measurements to measure student success, research may avoid the limitation of using only GPA as student success.

Book Synopsis Culture, Self, and, Motivation by : Avi Kaplan
Download or read book Culture, Self, and, Motivation written by Avi Kaplan and published by IAP. This book was released on 2009-07-01 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The authors of the chapters in this volume—past and present collaborators of Marty Maehr, and a few of his former graduate students along the years—are motivational researchers who conduct research using diverse methods and perspectives, and in different parts of the world. All, however, see their intellectual roots in Marty’s theoretical and empirical work. The chapters in this book are divided into two sections: Motivation and Self and Culture and Motivation. Clearly, the distinctions between these two sections are very blurry, as they are in Marty’s work. And yet, when the authors were asked to contribute their chapters, the research questions they addressed seemed to have formed two foci, with personal motivation and socio-cultural processes alternating as the core versus the background in the two sections.
