Book excerpt: (Uncorrected OCR) ABSTRACT In order to compare the visual-motor perceptual development of Chinese and non-Chinese children in Hong Kong, 354 Chinese and 240 non-Chinese children from K.l to P.5 were given the Bender Test. There were significant differences in the Bender error scores of 4 11 year old Chinese and non Chinese children. Chinese children was about i to 1 and a half years ahead of their non-Chinese counterparts. However, Chinese and non-Chinese children in the youngest age group, i.e. 3,6 to 3.11 years old did not differ. No significant difference was found between sex and time required to complete the Bender task, between the two groups (p .> 0.05). Results of the study reconfirmed the need for the local norms for Hong Kong Chinese children. A lower extension of the age group in the normative sample was also suggested to facilitate the use of the Bender Test for preschool children.

Download or read book Human Abilities in Cultural Context written by S. H. Irvine and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1988-09-30 with total page 634 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1988, Human Abilities in Cultural Context constituted a major development in conceptualising and studying human abilities. It formed a unique reference frame. This study offers a re-evaluation of ability theory by the editors, S. H. Irvine and J. W. Berry, and strong individual statements by H. J. Eysenck, Arthur R. Jensen, Joseph R. Royce, and Robert J. Sternberg, who represent markedly different approaches to the measurement of intelligence. It also focuses on contexts in which the limits of assessment by psychological tests are defined: in minority native groups in North America, in migrants to Britain, in lower-caste enclaves in India, among African minorities, and among Australian Aborigines. Written by long-term residents of the regions in question, these chapters presented a wealth of fresh data in relation to Western formulations of theory and practice.

Book excerpt: Historically, relatively few investigations in neuropsychology have been sensitive to the analysis of cultural variables. This handbook will assist the neuropsychologist interested in cultural competence and help increase understanding of the link between cultural competence in assessment and intervention and good treatment outcomes. The handbook authors provide an in-depth discussion of the current status of multicultural training in neuropsychology; specific information on diverse groups (age, gender, ethnicity, etc.), assessment instruments, and clinical populations (HIV infected, seizure disorders, brain injuries); and unique analysis of immigration patterns, forensics, and psychopharmacology. This volume is the first to summarize the cultural data available in neuropsychology. A valuable resource for clinical neuropsychologists, school psychologists and rehabilitation professionals.
