Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this penetrating and compelling reinterpretation of the Iliad and the Odyssey, Kevin Crotty explores the connection between the "poetic" nature of supplication on the one hand, and, on the other, the importance of supplication in the structure and poetics of the two epics. The supplicant's attempt to rouse pity by calling to mind a vivid sense of grief, he says, is important for an understanding of the poems, which invite their audience to contemplate scenes of past grieving. A poetics of supplication, Crotty asserts, leads irresistibly to a poetics of the Homeric epic.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book combines the exploration of the 'ethics' of the Iliad with its poetic and narrative techniques, all the way from touches of phrasing to the shaping of whole scenes and the interaction between scenes often separated by thousands of lines. These two approaches to the Iliad--through 'content' and through 'form'--are found to be inextricably worked together, which is why the book consists of 'soundings' or sample explorations, where larger arguments branch out from the observation of details in the formation of particular passages. Homer was an archaic poet, and even if he could write he surely created the poems to be heard. It has generally been held that this rules out the possibility of intricate complexities--the discoveries of many re-readings. This book maintains the contrary position: the kind of artistry uncovered, especially the long-distance interconnections, would be more rather than less accessible if perceived aurally. Furthermore, if the form and timing of the sessions were arranged by the performer, then this opens up further opportunities for shapings, patterns that would be more apparent when heard in real time than they are inside the uniform format of printed pages. These 'soundings' should interest those experienced in other literatures and cultures. All quotations of Greek are also given in translation.

Book excerpt: Homer: Poet of the "Iliad" is the perfect companion both for readers deepening their appreciation of the poem and its form and for those encountering Homer's work for the first time. Mark Edwards combines the advantages of a general introduction and a detailed commentary to make the insights of recent Homeric scholarship accessible to students and general readers as well as to classicists. Since interpretation of the epic requires an understanding of the ancient oral tradition and its conventions, Edwards offers a comprehensive analysis of the poetics of the Iliad and the Odyssey. He also discusses essential elements of Homeric society -- its religion, history, and social values -- to clarify the style and substance of the poetry. In the second half of the book, Edwards's scene-by-scene explication of ten major books of the Iliad leads the reader to a greater perception of Homer's mastery and manipulation of convention.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Homer’s Iliad is often considered a poem of blunt truthfulness, his characters’ motivation pleasingly simple. A closer look, however, reveals a complex interplay of characters who engage in an awful lot of lies. Beginning with Achilles, who hatches a secret plot to destroy his own people, Mark Buchan traces motifs of deception and betrayal throughout the poem. Homer’s heroes offer bluster, their passion linked to and explained by their lack of authenticity. Buchan reads Homer’s characters between the lies, showing how the plot is structured individual denial and what cannot be said.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Homeric Questions of the philosopher Porphyry (3rd cent. CE) is an important work in the history of Homeric criticism. Porphyry applies the dictum that the poet explains himself to solve questions of interpretation in Homer. This new edition of the Questions on the Iliad eliminates much that was wrongly attributed to Porphyry in the old edition (1880). In the interest of the non-specialist, the new text has a facing translation in English. The commentary explains Porphyry s arguments and the editor s textual decisions."
