Book excerpt: The Character of Seventeenth-Century French Protestantism and the Place of the Huguenot Refuge following the Revocation of the Edict of Nantes Thirty-seven years ago the late Emile-G. Leonard regretted that there were so few historical studies of seventeenth-century French Protestantism and no general 1 historical synthesis for the period as a whole. At the time Leonard's observation was accurate. Seventeenth-century French Protestantism traditionally remained a questionable and problematical subject for historians. All too frequently historians neglected it in favor of emphasizing its origins in the second-half of the sixteenth century and its renascence since the French Revolution. When the rare historian broke his silence and considered French Protestantism in the seventeenth-century, was meager and generally ambivalent or negative. The historiographer his treatment of seventeenth-century French Protestantism could only cite the outstanding works of Jean Pannier and Orentin Douen, which taken together emphasized the new pre eminence of Parisian Protestantism in the seventeenth century, and the genuine works of synthesis by John Vienot and Matthieu Lelievre, which again had to be placed side by side in order to complete coverage of the whole of the seventeenth 2 century. The only true intellectual history of seventeenth-century French Protestantism was the study by Albert Monod, which, however, dealt with the second-half of the century and, then, only in the broad context of both Protestant 3 and Catholic thought responding to the challenge of modern rationalism.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers a new type of working tool for Cartesian studies. It presents the literature of the last 160 years in alphabetical order (Part Two), combined with a systematic analytical survey (Part One) and a detailed topical index to the whole (Part Three). This organization makes it possible to turn bibliogra phy from a repository of references into a workshop of research. The system atic survey of Part One and the topical index of Part Three, together, offer a mise au point of Descartes studies over their full historical and topical range. The results have often been surprising and illuminating to the author, and if his experience is any guide, the reader, too, will begin to wonder about certain seemingly well-settled points, or marvel at the Protean shapes which our elusive philosopher assumes when mighty commentators force him to reveal his true nature. A work which has been in the making for fifteen years must show the traces of expansion in scope, and changes in evaluation. Bibliographia cartesiana amends my Descartes chapter in A Critical Bibliography of French Literature, v. 3, 1961 (see no. I9a), and supersedes an earlier version of Parts One and Two, published in 1959 under the main title Descartes and his Philosophy, v. 1 (set: no. I8a). Part I (Introduction to Descartes Studies) divides the field into eleven broad areas.

Book Synopsis France in the Age of Louis XIII and Richelieu by : Victor Lucien Tapié
Download or read book France in the Age of Louis XIII and Richelieu written by Victor Lucien Tapié and published by Greenwood. This book was released on 1975 with total page 658 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Cardinal Richelieu became Louise XIII's chief minister in 1624, France was in danger of becoming a vassal state. By strengthening the power of the state and pressing the whole nation into its service, Louis and Richelieu helped to liberate France from its medieval shackles and opened wider horizons for every Frenchman. Richelieu is generally regarded as the architect of French unity who perceived better than any of his contemporaries the historical trend toward the modern nation-state. In this book, Victor-L. Tapie refutes those who have attempted to detach Richelieu from the age in which he lived; Richelieu from the age in which he lived; Richelieu's greatness, he argues, resided precisely in his being a man of his time, who in all his work never lost sight of realities but sought to merge them with France's needs and aspirations. Yet, however responsible Richelieu was for the achievements of his ere, it would be unjust to discount the contribution of Louise XIII. Inspired by a sense of his mission as ruler, the King was capable of speaking and acting in ways that compelled obedience and lent authority to the cardinal's domestic and foreign policies. The imposing administrative structure that the two men erected-though incomplete and precarious-provided the foundation for the glorious years of Louise XIV. This important work by an eminent French historian develops these themes as it traces the reign of Louis XIII from its ominous beginning in 1610 to its profoundly moving close thirty-three years later. Although Louis and Richelieu are the main protagonists of his stirring account, Professor Tapie never loses sight of the French people. This wise and compassionate book brings to life the entire society that inspired Alexandre Dumas's classic The Three Musketeers
