Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Quantitative Analysis Since the publication of the first edition of this book numerous changes have been made in the standardized methods of analysis of certain industrial materials, as adopted by official committees of various scientific societies. In the present edition the discussions and detailed procedure have been modified to conform to the revised methods, wherever possible. This statement applies to the analysis of coal, water, fertilizers, dairy products and insecticides. A number of other analytical methods are now described, of which may be mentioned the gravimetric determination of the chloride, sulphate and phosphate radicals and the indirect determination of the halogens; the perchlorate method for potassium; the determination of chromium and vanadium in steel and the glyoxime method for nickel in steel; the analysis of brass and of soft bearing metals; and the volumetric determination of zinc. A part of the discussion of metallography and treatment of steel has been rewritten and several new sections have been added to this portion of the book. New photomicrographs have been substituted for the old ones and about fifteen new figures have been used at various points throughout the book, the latter being the work of the author's students in Chemical Engineering, to whom grateful acknowledgment is due. Finally, a new system of chapter division has been introduced in order to give greater emphasis to the sections dealing with industrial analysis. In the process of making these changes a considerable portion of the book has been rewritten and the discussions have been amplified, in the interest of added clearness. It is hoped that these changes will serve to enhance the usefulness of the book as a college text and that the favor with which the first edition was so generously received will not be undeserved by the present edition. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Students Guide in Quantitative Analysis A portion of the following pages originally appeared in the columns of the American Chemist, under the title: "Schemes of Analyses executed in the School of Mines, Columbia College." Numerous applications for copies in book form have induced the author to publish the Schemes under a more general title. Since writing the articles the author has been called to another sphere of labor, and the circumstances which led to their compilation are explained in the following paragraphs, quoted from the prefatory remarks accompanying the original publication. "The system of instruction in Quantitative Analytical Chemistry, organized in the School of Mines, Columbia College, by Dr. C. F. Chandler, has been developed by the Assistants, who have had charge of the Laboratory for Quantitative Analysis, Mr. Alexis A. Julien, Dr. Paul Schweitzer, and the writer. The practical examples and the methods of analysis were originally selected by Prof. Chandler; the latter have been modified by the Assistants, and from time to time they have introduced new processes, conforming to the advances made in this department of chemical science. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Course of Instruction in Quantitative Chemical Analysis for Beginning Students: With Explanatory Notes, Questions and Analytical Problems This book is intended for use with classes consisting of students who have completed a substantial year's work in Elementary Chemistry and Qualitative Analysis, and who are beginning the study of Quantitative Analysis. On the laboratory side its main object is to furnish the student with directions sufficiently detailed to enable him to do successful work with a minimum of personal oversight from the instructor. The instructor is thereby placed in a position, in the laboratory, as well as in the classroom, to exert his efforts more especially towards the development in his students of theoretical knowledge and the power to think. For the best results, the laboratory work should of course be accompanied by lectures and recitations; and, with the latter in mind, it has seemed desirable to include the questions of Part IV, and the stoichiometrical problems of Part V. The questions of Part IV are for the most part answered in the notes or elsewhere in the book; but it has been the writer's experience that beginners react more favorably to concrete questions assigned in advance for study, than to the same questions when put to them for the first time just after they are supposed to have mastered the details and principles of a specific analytical process. The problems of Part V are such as arc regularly met with in analytical work, and their conscientious study will give the student an insight into the principles of a wide variety of processes; the answers to the problems have been intentionally omitted. It has been the writer's practice to require, as a written exercise to be handed in at the beginning of a recitation, the solution of a definite number of problems each week throughout the course; these to be graded and returned at the end of the following recitation. Part I comprises a somewhat detailed discussion of those principles, both of theory and practice, which should be constantly kept in mind by the worker in analytical chemistry. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Quantitative Analysis for Mining Engineers This small book on quantitative analysis consists entirely of a series of articles which appeared in the school OF mines quar terly, Volume XXV. It was written primarily, to furnish the engineering students at Columbia University, particularly the min ing engineers, with the directions required for their course in quantitative analysis. Also, as so many men now enter the min ing course with advanced standing from other universities, col leges and schools, it seemed advisable to show in this way what we require from our mining students in quantitative work. No attempt is made to cover the entire field of inorganic analysis; but a few important analyses are given in considerable detail; the aim being to describe these analyses with enough explanation for the student to work understandingly and with an appreciation of the modern theories of chemistry. References will be found at the end of the chapters to books and articles giving additional information on the subjects treated and the last chapter is devoted entirely to references on important analyses which are not given in the text nor required in the course for mining engineers. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Course in Quantitative Chemical Analysis Gravimetric and Volumetric In the following pages methods for complete analyses are outlined, and substances have been selected for analysis which, it is believed, will illustrate the more common methods of separating and determining the parts of a compound or mixtures of compounds. In some determinations, two or more methods are outlined. In other cases, even though only one process is suggested, it should be borne in mind that there is often a choice of several methods, and the same result can often be attained in many different ways. The larger works should be freely consulted by the student that he may become acquainted with the variety of processes that are more or less in common use. The work is graduated, and both in the gravimetric and volumetric divisions proceeds from simpler substances and operations to the more complex. The arrangement is such that any part may be omitted to suit the time and convenience of the student. The ionic theory is now quite generally employed to explain chemical reactions. The theory is usually studied in the courses in general chemistry, and it has not been deemed necessary to introduce the subject here. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Tables for Qualitative Chemical Analysis: Arranged for the Use of Students It is, of course, not necessary for every student to work through the reactions for all the substances given in these tables; typical ones can be selected according to circumstances, e.g. the medical student need not necessarily work through the reactions of rare earths. Theory or Qualitative Analysis. - It is assumed that the student will be taught the principles of analysis and how to use these tables, and that he will not be left to struggle through them unaided; it is for this reason and because the book is intended for bench use that equations and the usual more or less lengthy explanations are omitted. The directions arc made as brief as possible, for students when engaged in practical work have usually neither the time nor the inclination to wade through more or less lengthy descriptions of the methods of procedure. In this laboratory the principal explanations are given in the form of leturettes and demonstrations of fifteen or twenty minutes before the practical exercises; the class also meets once a week for one hour's tutorial instruction in the theory of qualitative analysis, chemical equations, calculations and similar matters, and there is a written examination upon the work at the end of the term, as well as practical and theoretical examinations at the end of the year. Weighing and Measuring. - By requiring the student to work throughout with weighed or measured quantities, it is necessary that he should be shown, unless he is already familiar with them, how to use the balance, burette, measuring flasks and pipettes; the small amount of extra time necessary for this will, however, be well spent. The quantity of substance to be examined can either be weighed out separately by each student, or students can take it in turns to weigh out and divide the portions for a group of students. The balance used need not be an expensive one, very good chemical balances, weighing to a milligram, can now be obtained for less than 30/-; if the balance available is not sufficiently sensitive for the smaller weights, larger quantities can be weighed out, placed on glass or glazed paper and divided by a spatula into approximately equal parts, just as powders are sometimes divided by pharmacists; although this would not be quite so satisfactory, it would be a great improvement upon the usual method of shaking an indefinite quantity out of a bottle.
