Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Course of Practical Physics for Students of Science and Engineering: Part I, Fundamental Measurements and Properties of Matter; Part II, Heat A collection of diagrams and engravings is placed at the end of the book so that the student can illustrate his laboratory reports without the labor of making drawings. A few pieces of apparatus, experimental methods, and proofs have been given that may possess some novelty, although the fixed purpose has been to use the standard classical forms except in such cases where a trial of not less than a year by a class of one hundred or more students has demonstrated the superiority of the proposed innovation. In conclusion I desire to acknowledge my indebtedness to Professor Jacob Westlund, of the department of mathematics in Purdue University, for many scholarly suggestions throughout the progress of the work; and also to Mr. Lloyd E. King, form erly instructor of physics in Purdue University, who has been so good as to make many suggestions the incorporation of which into the text has added materially to its accuracy and clearness. I am also indebted to Mr. F. L. Shinn of the department of physical chemistry in the University of Wisconsin for the collection and verification of the data on vapor densities contained in the tables. Book excerpt: From the PREFACE. The aim of the present work is to furnish the student with a laboratory manual of physical processes and measurements in which the explanation of the theory and the description of the method of manipulation of each experiment is so complete as to preclude the necessity of consulting either another book or a laboratory instructor. The work is so designed that it can be begun at the commencement of the second college year. In the selection of experiments the plan has been to include only such methods as are strictly scientific, that have as practical a bent as possible, and that can be depended upon to give good results in the hands of the average student. This enlists the energy of the student and saves that of the instructor. Although the majority of the experiments are quantitative measurements, some few methods and principles which experience has found to give difficulty to the average college student have been illustrated by qualitative exercises. It has been assumed that the experiment is rare that is so important as to justify a student performing it before he understands the theory involved and the derivation of the formulae required. Consequently the theory of each experiment is given in detail and the required formula developed at length. Since, in general, a student can appreciate most completely the physical significance of the various steps in an analytical discussion when couched in terms with which he has been for some time acquainted, it has appeared desirable to use as elementary mathematical methods as possible even though brevity be thereby sometimes sacrificed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Physics for Students of Science and Engineering is a calculus-based textbook of introductory physics. The book reviews standards and nomenclature such as units, vectors, and particle kinetics including rectilinear motion, motion in a plane, relative motion. The text also explains particle dynamics, Newton's three laws, weight, mass, and the application of Newton's laws. The text reviews the principle of conservation of energy, the conservative forces (momentum), the nonconservative forces (friction), and the fundamental quantities of momentum (mass and velocity). The book examines changes in momentum known as impulse, as well as the laws in momentum conservation in relation to explosions, collisions, or other interactions within systems involving more than one particle. The book considers the mechanics of fluids, particularly fluid statics, fluid dynamics, the characteristics of fluid flow, and applications of fluid mechanics. The text also reviews the wave-particle duality, the uncertainty principle, the probabilistic interpretation of microscopic particles (such as electrons), and quantum theory. The book is an ideal source of reference for students and professors of physics, calculus, or related courses in science or engineering.

Book excerpt: This is one of enumerable self-help or how to books with an emphasis on Engineering Physics Practical. The basic premise of the book is that there are certain simple experiments, involving no more than rudimentary Physics laws and the very basic laws of Engineering Physics for undergraduate college engineering students. But these practical are often not done or taken lightly, for several reasons. First, people don’t realize how easy they are to do. Second, and more fundamental, they are not done because it does not occur to people to do them. Finally, and tragically, no one in their elementary, middle, or high school educational experience has stressed the importance of doing them, and of course neither did they teach to do them. This book is to reveal to you what the experiments are, make them readily understandable, and by means of a very easy-to-use illustrations. The main thing you should expect from this book is the theories and practical related small information more precisely about experiments. You will get a rudimentary understanding of the basic concepts behind the Engineering Physics experiment that governs the fundamental daily life questions that challenge us in life. The book is divided into seven major categories and Fifteen chapters. In this book the students will find solutions to experimental obstacles normally faced by undergraduate college engineering students. students. In summary, you don’t need any special background or ability to profit from this book.

Book excerpt: The book entitled "Physics-Practical for B.Sc./B.Tech." is prepared for the students pursuing graduate degree in Science and Engineering with an objective to fulfil the need for a concise laboratory book in Physics, covering the prescribed experiments in a single volume. The students pursuing science and engineering degree course, spend a fairly good amount of time in laboratory activities. Learning theoretical concepts of physics in laboratory by performing live experiments is a very important aspect of the curriculum in science and engineering. With the help of carefully planned experiments, the students get opportunity to explore the process of experimentation. Keeping in view of the problems faced by students in performing the laboratory experiments, the present book is designed to facilitate and to cater their needs. This book describes the experiments covering broad areas of physics namely; General Properties of Matter, Optics, Heat, Electricity and Electronics. That this book shall be extremely useful to the graduating students of science and engineering streams with the expectation that they will develop a deep interest in laboratory experiments with wider active participation.

Book excerpt: Designed for the introductory calculus-based physics course, Physics for Engineers and Scientists is distinguished by its lucid exposition and accessible coverage of fundamental physical concepts. Presenting a modern view of classical mechanics and electromagnetism for today's science and engineering students, it includes coverage of optics and quantum physics, emphasising the relationship between macroscopic and microscopic phenomena. Organised to address specific concepts and then build on them, this highly readable textbook divides each chapter into short, focused sections followed by review questions. Using real-world examples, the authors offer a glimpse of the practical applications of physics in science and engineering, developing a solid conceptual foundation before introducing mathematical results and derivations (a basic knowledge of derivatives and integrals is assumed).

It does not describe a systematic course in practical work. The present edition retains the basic outlook of earlier editions, but modifications have been made in response to important changes in computational and experimental methods in the past decade. The text is in three parts. The first deals with the statistical treatment of data, and here the text has been extensively revised to take account of the now widespread use of electronic calculators. The second deals with experimental methods, giving details of particular experiments that demonstrate the art and craft of the experimenter. The third part deals with such essential matters as keeping efficient records, accuracy in arithmetic, and writing good, scientific English. Copyright © Libri GmbH. All rights reserved.
