Book excerpt: Excerpt from How to Study and Teach History and Civics in the Grades During the last ten years there has been a keen and widespread interest in the subject of history in the grades. It has been discussed by state and national teachers' associ ation as well as carefully considered by historical societies. Much has been done looking toward the formulating of some general course of study and the creation of a senti ment in favor of trained teachers for this work. A great deal has been accomplished too in the prepara tion of material adapted to each of the different grades. Many excellent books, covering every phase of the work, have been published and may now be obtained by every one. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Observations Upon the Natural History of Epidemic Diarrhoea The causative agencies from which springs the plentiful harvest of child mortality in large cities may be conceived as a felted mass of rootlets almost inextricably intertwined. Those of poverty, bad housing, bad feeding, and neglect, may be severally recognized, but the extent of their interrelations with actual respiratory and alimentary disease - those to which the greater part of the mortality is referred - can be traced only with difficulty. It is the object Of this work to aid ln the labour of cutting away the matrix and entangling fibres and to lay bare the hidden ramifications of at least one important causative agency - epidemic diarrhoea. This affection - if we accept provisionally the more novel and generally favoured conception. As to its nature - is revealed as something very like an ordinary infectious disease, and one which permeates all classes, while the excessive mortality it gathers round itself in urban centres must be regarded as something superadded, owing to the vicious circle it forms with those baneful conditions of slum life mentioned above. On the other hand, its peculiarly intimate association with the circum stances of domestic life, from the continual faecal pollution of the interior of the household by infants and others, tends to make it more so than other affections of the kind peculiarly a class disease, and an especial scourge of dirty neighbourhoods. Dirty towns may however be saved from excessive mortality by a high percentage of breast feeding. A notable point in the interesting comparison that can be drawn between diarrhoea and typhoid fever is that, in accordance with their peculiarly opposite age-incidence curves, the marked and habitual depositing of infectious excreta within the household in the former disease may make the question of water-closet versus conservancy pan a matter of far less importance than in the latter. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Outline of History, for the Grades The aim Of this outline is to present the connected threads and principles which the author has worked Out in detailed form for children in A History for Graded and District Schools. Two chief ends have been aimed at: first, to present a plan of work which will, if followed by the teacher, tend to develop in her mind a real sense Of history, - of its growth and unity; second, to suggest such material for the use of pupils as will tend to develop in their minds the true historic sense and lift them from grade to grade into ever wider and richer historical views. The outline is based upon the idea that pupils in his tory should be led to feel and participate in the life of the people they are studying, feel the problems of daily living which confronted them and strive to solve them. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Historical Curriculum in Colleges As regards the sequence of historical subjects in college, I believe that as a general principle the order of chronological development should be followed where possible, and that a gen eral view of the field of history should ordinarily precede courses on special periods or movements. Such a view of history cannot, however, be advantageously given in a single course, but requires two or three years of consecutive study. If our students brought' to college any such acquaintance with the field of history as is possessed by the graduates of German gymnasia or French lyce'es, they might profitably begin at once with more intensive courses, but such, unfortunately, is far from being the case. In spite of the rapid advances in historical instruction in schools, it still remains true that the average freshman carries with him but a small viaticum of historical knowledge or training, and that his acquaintance with the world's history must for the most part still be gained in college. A general view of the development of civilized life is what he has the right, first of all, to demand, only this must not be so rapid as to render impossible any real under standing of the times studied. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Studies in General History In teaching history in higher grades, three points must always be in mind: first, to give each student independent work; next, to subject the results of solitary, individual thought to the freest criticism and discussion in the class-room; last of all, the accepted results of the collective labor must be arranged in compact and logical order, and stowed away in memory. By the' solitary study of the individual, the mind gains power and originality; by the free lance in a free field of class-room work, the mind gains courage, sharpness, speed, and generous temper; by the strict, close sifting of study and discussion, it gains concentration, clearness, and breadth. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Study of History in the Elementary: Schools Report to the American Historical Association The effects of the report of the Committee of Seven pre sented to the American Historical Association (1898) are well known. A member of that committee prepared a re port on the study of history in the elementary schools which has not received the attention it deserves. Besides giving an excellent summary of the conditions under which his tory was then taught, Miss Lucy M. Salmon outlined a six year course of study which was thought suitable for the ele mentary schools of the country. In grades three and four the biographies of great men were to be presented. Ele mentary Ancient History; Mediaeval and Modern History; English History; and American History were recommended for the succeeding grades. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Course of Study in History, Civics, and Ethics for the Day Elementary Schools Fundamentally, history, -civics, and Geography deal with relationships or problems arising from man's efforts to live with his fellows on the earth. They are different aspects of the same social subject, rather than three closely correlated subjects as they have often been viewed. This conception of History, Civics, and Geography as a tri-une subject has exercised a controlling influence over the selection of the kind and extent of teaching material, and the recommendations of types of teaching method, made in this Course of Study. It should, therefore, be thoroughly understood and appreciated by the teacher who would achieve the aim intended in this Course. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Topical Discussion of American History: Constituting a Teachers' Manual and Course of Study in History and Civics for Use in the Elementary Schools This little volume is a working manual for the teacher ano constitutes a course in history and civics for the elementar schools. Many able educators have been consulted in the prepara tion of this course, and it is believed to be so complete in ever detail that boards of education can adopt it as the course in his tory and civics without further reference to these subjects in th school manual or regular course of study. This course has bee prepared with especial reference to the regular text-books. Teach ers and pupils frequently complain that the regular or officia text on history is too difficult, and it is hoped that this course wil be of great assistance to them in the use of this text. The dis cussions, references and questions in this volume are intended fo the direct help and assistance of the teacher, the object being t reduce the teacher's work to a minimum and to provide at th same time a broad and progressive course in history and civics In order to further teacher, a pupil's outline for use i] connection with this course of study has been prepared and i bound under a separate cover. Special attention is directed t Questions for Class Recitations and Questions for Composi tions and Examinations, which follow each general topic 0 chapter in the work for the seventh and eighth grades. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Teaching of History in Elementary Schools To-day the attention of everyone is fixed on the history that is being made from hour to hour. Our grasp of the ideals which we have formed in the past is being put to the test, and the course of the future is being determined. Patriotism is not a matter of discussion, but of action. The connection between the lessons which the citizens of Great Britain have learned from their knowledge of her history and the significance which they attach to the present momentous struggle is so close that we hope to -be pardoned for publishing a book on the teaching of history even at such a time. It is true that, in the midst of such events, it is hard to view the past in its proper perspective and not to regard the whole course of his tory from the standpoint of the present issues. The book, however, was in the main written before the war, when it was possible to look back on the past and for ward into the future with less emotion and more cold blooded judgment. What emboldens us to publish it now is that, reading our manuscript again in these days when interpretations of history are being tested in the fire, we see nothing to withdraw and little to alter. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History in the Elementary School Of course it is absolutely necessary that the scientific historian shall discover by a rigid method what our social past has really been. The disentanglement of truths from myths is a serious task and must be accomplished relent lessly. But the acceptance of this obligation does not by any means complete the duty of histo rians as a class. Since ordinary men cannot and will not know all that historians do, it is neces sary to choose that which is the more significant in the interpretation of the historic currents which have swept us into our present and will sweep us on to our future. These Reviews, besides the teacher's notes and the outlines of his lectures, contain also the questions given at forty examinations by the New York State Education Department. These examinations popularly known as the Regents Examinations, cover the New York High School course in that particular subject. These questions, having been prepared under the supervision of the New York State Education Department represent the most thoughtful view of what an examination in that subject should contain. They are the best test of a student's knowledge and an invaluable aid to students preparing for an examination.
