Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As a coach, it is often cause for concern to see your athletes performing skills well in practice but struggling in the game. Coaching Football Technical and Tactical Skills focuses on the situational decisions players and coaches make that often determine the outcome of games. Written by the American Sport Education Program (ASEP) in conjunction with Rob Ash, the head football coach at Drake University, this book allows players to gain valuable gamelike playing experience in practice by putting them in key tactical situations like the scramble, man-to-man and zone pass coverage, and onside kick. Each skill is clearly described, and nearly 150 photos are used to further help you understand and implement the techniques in specific situations. Included are quick tips on how to detect and correct errors, cues athletes need to be aware of in various tactical situations, and key information your athletes need to know to make the appropriate decisions on the field. Skills are cross-referenced to show how they relate to each other and to enable you to plan practice situations quickly. Eight detailed practice plans incorporating gamelike situations and a season plan are included to help you get the most out of each practice. Endorsed by the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA), Coaching Football Technical and Tactical Skills serves as a companion resource for ASEP's Coaching Football Technical and Tactical Skills online course, which, along with Coaching Principles and Sport First Aid courses and CPR certification, makes up the curriculum for ASEP's Bronze Level coaching certification program. Numerous state high school associations, colleges and universities, national sport organizations, and national governing bodies of Olympic sports use the Bronze Level in whole or in part to qualify coaches. The Bronze Level prepares coaches for all aspects of coaching and is a recognized and respected credential for all who earn it.

Currently, 70% of kids drop out of organized sports by the age of 13, which has given rise to a generation of overweight, unhealthy young adults. There is a solution. John O’Sullivan shares the secrets of the coaches and parents who have not only raised elite athletes, but have done so by creating an environment that promotes positive core values and teaches life lessons instead of focusing on wins and losses, scholarships, and professional aspirations. Changing the Game gives adults a new paradigm and a game plan for raising happy, high performing children, and provides a national call to action to return youth sports to our kids.

Book excerpt: We hear the reports and see the video all too often: youth coaches and officials assaulted, fights breaking out at youth sporting events, and parents and coaches losing control over what should be a child's game. It doesn't have to be that way. What we don't see are the thousands of youth football coaches who do it the right way: teaching the game and the ethos of the game to children who love to play. Coaching youth football can be one of the most exciting, exhilarating, and rewarding experiences. It takes a tremendous amount of hard work, and an ability to communicate with other coaches, players, and parents, but there are few things to compare with watching young people compete and win, or learn lessons that will help them for a lifetime. Teaching the game of football goes far beyond the white lines, beyond the techniques of blocking and tackling. Along with learning the fundamentals of the game, young people learn teamwork, sportsmanship, responsible leadership, and the need to work hard and prepare to reach goals. To avoid being one of those trapped in a nightmare, a youth coach must master the ability to relate to both players and parents. Above all, a coach must communicate. It is important that parents trust the coach. After all, parents are submitting their child to a game that is, by its very nature, physically brutal. Parents need to trust that the coach will have the best interests of the team, and their child, in mind at all times. When those interests collide, parents need to know why a coach makes certain decisions, and how that will affect their child. Along with communicating with adults, youth football coaches must be experts in understanding and relating to children. Youth football players have very little concept of the actual fundamentals of the game. They see a college or professional game on television and see long passes, break away runs, or big hits and the thousands of people who cheer while players celebrate. This is far from the reality of the game. Coaches must be able to demonstrate and teach fundamentals. Big plays come out of the ability to be fundamentally sound, and being fundamentally sound takes hour upon hour of watching, listening, and practicing. In the NFL, and increasingly in college, success is defined by wins and losses. The bottom line is paramount. This isn't necessarily different at the youth level; the bottom line is simply wider. Wins and losses are important, and no one wants to play for a loser. But, if a youth coach is successful, they create not only wins on the field; they also help to create joy in the hearts of children and parents, players who learn how to play and how to be leaders, and, most of all, a successful youth coach gives players the building blocks to be successful in life. HowExpert publishes quick 'how to' guides on all topics from A to Z by everyday experts.

This book was released on 2017-11-27 with total page 54 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mental discipline is a trainable trait. Coaches do not have to rely on players to either have mental discipline or not. But, there is a mental discipline training process to follow to teach the players. In this book, How to Train High School Football Players to be Mentally Disciplined, Coach Bill Renner, describes the process of mental discipline training for high school football players. This process includes the procedures for on-the-field, off-the-field, player conduct, and football program procedures. There are many areas a high school football coach must set a behavior expectation for the players. Often those areas are overlooked, or, the behavior expectation is not established prior to it being violated by the players. With 23-years of successful head high school football coaching experience at four high schools, Coach Renner has created a comprehensive list of the areas a head football must set behavior expectations for his players. A sampling of those include on-the-field situations such as stretching and agilities, injury procedures, sideline conduct, practice attire, game attire, scoring a touchdown, practice accountability, and post-game player handshake line. Off-the-field areas include care of the locker room, care of their equipment, attendance at freshman or JV games, away game trips, classroom behavior and academic checks. Player conduct areas include player's language, promptness, attitude, social media, in-season socializing, and homecoming week activities. Football program procedures include program traditions like touching a sign, national anthem conduct, victory song, pre-game meals, captain selection, team picture, and banquet attire. Coach Renner gives you his team's expectations for each of these areas and more. He also details the mental discipline training he instituted to correct inappropriate behavior for each area. Those discipline training reminders were different for in-season, off-season, or, classroom/school violations. If you would like to develop a strong football culture you need to have behavior expectations for all the areas the players will be in. This book will give you a comprehensive outline of how to accomplish creating a strong football culture by training high school football players to be mentally disciplined.
