Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is the relationship between the social performance of companies and their financial performance? More colloquially, can a firm effectively attend to both people and profits as it conducts its business? This question has been investigated in no fewer than 95 empirical studies published since 1972. The authors have assembled a compendium of this research to give researchers and practitioners alike a broad overview of these 95 studies and a systematic database detailing the content of each one. This book provides a comprehensive portrait of this research literature. It begins with a broad orientation to the literature, exploring why the link between social and financial performance has been subject to continual inquiry and often heated debate. The authors then present an integrated overview of the 95 studies. Through the charts and tables, the authors illuminate the nature of the studies conducted; the data samples selected for investigation; the ways in which financial and social performance have been measured; and the overall tally of results.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book comprehensively describes social responsibility and sustainable development, with contributions from scientists and representatives from industry working in the field. The papers are innovative, cross-cutting and many share practice-based experiences, some of which may be replicable elsewhere. Prepared by the Inter-University Sustainable Development Research Programme (IUSDRP) and the World Sustainable Development Research and Transfer Centre (WSD-RTC), it reiterates the current need to promote social responsibility. Social responsibility and sustainable development are two different concepts, whose integration over the years has led to significant advances in the way enterprises see and perceive their operations. It is not only about policies or steps taken to meet legal requirements, but is also about social equality and environmental accountability, also bearing in mind the links with eco-efficiency, innovation, and the health and wellbeing of workers. According to ISO 26000, social responsibility is the responsibility of an organisation for the impacts of its decisions and activities on society and the environment, through transparent and ethical behaviour that: a) contributes to sustainable development, including health and the welfare of society b) takes into account the expectations of stakeholders c) is in compliance with applicable law and consistent with international norms of behaviour d) is integrated throughout the organisation and practised in its relationships. But even though the relations between social responsibility and sustainability are strong, it is still necessary to encourage organisations to adhere to, or at least follow the principles of sustainable development in their operations, giving something back to the community. As such, there is a need for a better understanding of how social responsibility is related to sustainable development, and of the identification of processes, methods and tools that may help the integration of these two important elements. There is also a real need to showcase successful examples of how to structure behaviour and institutional practice in line with the sustainability challenges we face today. Book excerpt: In the recent decade, the study of the relationship between corporate social responsibility (CRS) and firm's financial performance has been a hot topic in the academic world. This study examines the linkage between corporate social responsibility (CSR) and corporate financial performance. In this study, we investigate the relationship by analyzing the correlation of the corporate social responsibility rating based on KLD scores and several financial performance measurements based on accounting measures. The result indicates that there are significant correlations between corporate social responsibility and corporate financial performance. Though, this study does not explore the direction of the causality between them, where further research can be done to have a better understanding of the relationship.

Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2014 in the subject Business economics - Business Ethics, Corporate Ethics, grade: 2,0, University of Augsburg, language: English, abstract: This essay is concerned with the empirical question whether Corporate Social Responsibility of Multinational Companies has an impact on its financial performance. Currently, the widely spread debate about the importance of responsible and sustainable behavior of firms leads to different positions in the business world and requires explicit generally excepted answers. The multitude of already existing studies shows that it is almost impossible to find one commonly accepted definition and one perfectly fitting level of CSR. This study works out two widely accepted measures of CSR and its relation to financial performance in the context of a company ́s reputation. The results of these studies show that a positive relation between social and environmental awareness and the accounting-based financial performance of a company do in fact exist. By using data from already analyzed meta-studies, the phenomenon can be explained by the importance of reputation in today ́s business world.

Book excerpt: The U.S. hospitality industry's profitability has been shifting to environmental management and corporate social responsibility (CSR) practices. Hospitality industries accounted for 5% of the global market in 2015 and are expected to increase by 130% in 2035. Grounded in stakeholder theory, this correlation study examined the relationship between corporate sustainability officer (CSO) CSR, CSO environmental management, and hospitality business profitability. Secondary data were collected from 97 hotel websites of the Minneapolis-St. Paul, Minnesota from 2014 to 2016. The multiple linear regression combinations of CSR and environmental management (EM) measured significantly related to the profitability index, F(3, 93) = 4.67, p < .001, adj. R2 = .13. The sample multiple correlation coefficients were .36, indicating approximately 13% of the variance of the profitability index. The multiple linear regression combinations of CSR measures significantly related to the profitability index, F(2,94) = 6.05, p < .001, adjusted R2 = .11. The sample multiple correlation coefficients were .34, indicating approximately 11% of the variance of the profitability index. The linear combination of EM measures were not significantly related to the profitability index, F(2,94) = 2.91, p < .001, adjusted R2 = .06. The sample multiple correlation coefficients were .24, indicating approximately 6% of the variance of the profitability index. The implications for positive social change include the potential to identify hospitality industry leaders involved in environmental management who have a CSR to promote social change in their communities.

Book excerpt: The core idea of corporate social responsibility, the notion that companies have a responsibility beyond legal requirements, is by now deeply embedded in the corporate cultures of the largest U.S. companies. The authors suggest that productive debate now focuses on the following two issues. First, what are the impacts of existing corporate social responsibility programs for the corporation? And, second, what constitutes the precise contours of this responsibility? This book explores these two themes. The issue of how corporate social responsibility affects individual companies engaged in socially responsible activities is not well understood. Further, the distinction between legitimate and illegitimate corporate social responsibility activities has not always been clearly drawn. This book, therefore, is designed to fill in some of the gaps in our understanding. This is done by carefully organizing and reviewing the relevant and growing literature on corporate social responsibility. In addition, this book reports on the results of two original empirical studies designed to further explore the relationship between corporate social responsibility and traditional financial performance. This book has profound implications for business executives and researchers in finance, accounting, business ethics, and business and society.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Corporate social responsibility (CSR) expresses a fundamental morality in the way a company behaves toward society. It follows ethical behavior toward stakeholders and recognizes the spirit of the legal and regulatory environment. The idea of CSR gained momentum in the late 1950s and 1960s with the expansion of large conglomerate corporations and became a popular subject in the 1980s with R. Edward Freeman's Strategic Management: A Stakeholder Approach and the many key works of Archie B. Carroll, Peter F. Drucker, and others. In the wake of the financial crisis of 2008–2010, CSR has again become a focus for evaluating corporate behavior. First published in 1953, Howard R. Bowen’s Social Responsibilities of the Businessman was the first comprehensive discussion of business ethics and social responsibility. It created a foundation by which business executives and academics could consider the subjects as part of strategic planning and managerial decision-making. Though written in another era, it is regularly and increasingly cited because of its relevance to the current ethical issues of business operations in the United States. Many experts believe it to be the seminal book on corporate social responsibility. This new edition of the book includes an introduction by Jean-Pascal Gond, Professor of Corporate Social Responsibility at Cass Business School, City University of London, and a foreword by Peter Geoffrey Bowen, Daniels College of Business, University of Denver, who is Howard R. Bowen's eldest son.

This book attempts to answer this question with regard to different aspects and levels. It takes a positive position to this question and demonstrates that, under certain conditions, organizations can act responsibly and profitably at the same time. It elaborates on these conditions and provides evidence for the assumed positive relation between responsibility and profitability. The author uses analysis of the acceptance of corporate social responsibility (CSR) policies across Europe, the consequences of CSR on motivation, commitment and absenteeism; and organizational responsibility and the bottom of the pyramid to provide evidence for the assumed positive relationship between responsibility and profitability. Uniquely taking an organizational perspective on CSR, scholars and students of business ethics will find this impressive book to be a invaluable resource. Business professional will also find plenty of important information in this admirable compendium.

Book excerpt: The impact of CSR on corporate financial performance has been highly debated in both business and academic world since the concept of CSR emerged in the 1950s. Previous studies concluded the impact into three aspects-positive, negative, and neutral-and each aspect has its own advocators. Same voices can be found in the banking industry. However, studies focusing on the relationship between CSR and financial performance in the U.S. banking industry are scarce. This study examined the correlation between CSR and efficiency ratio (ER) in the U.S. banking industry from 2009 to 2017. In order to separately study the impact of different CSR components on ER, CSR in this research was divided into five sub-dimensions: overall CSR, community, employees, environment, and governance. Using the data of 28 U.S. based bank holding and intermediate holding companies, the researcher conducted Spearman ranking analyses on 25 individual banking institutions and the banking industry in a nine-year period. The findings suggested that the correlations between the five CSR components and ER are statistically insignificant, in order words, a neutral relationship is discovered. However, the r values of the industry analysis also indicated that even though the correlations are insignificant, most of the CSR components are still positively correlated to ER after 2010. This finding implied that CSR can be a "hygiene" factor that assists the banking institutions to quickly recover from the financial crisis

Book excerpt: Over the last three decades, the pressure on firms to engage in Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) activities and establish themselves as highly socially responsible companies has increased. However, on the issue of incentive, some corporations view CSR activities as simply a costly hindrance and some companies use CSR methodologies as a strategic tactic to obtain public support for their presence in global markets which could help companies to sustain a competitive advantage by using their social contributions. Researchers around the world have reported a positive, negative, mixed and neutral impacts of corporate social responsibility on corporate financial performance (CFP). On this background, this study aimed at summarizing the findings of major empirical studies and drawing the conceptual framework to investigate the relationship between CSR and CFP.
