Although the nation has set a goal for all students to be proficient in reading, many of the nation's students are not proficient readers. The vast majority of research examining reading proficiency and reading achievement has concentrated on the cognitive aspects of reading and the use of scientifically based reading interventions. However, there is a body of literature that suggests that reading achievement is related to attitudes toward reading. The purpose of this study was to determine the recreational and academic reading attitudes of a group of sixth-grade students and to determine if their attitudes toward reading were related to measures of their reading achievement. This study was guided by seven research questions and utilized three research designs. Descriptive research was used to answer research questions one and two which sought to determine the recreational and academic reading attitudes of the sixth grade students participating in this study. Causal comparative research was used to answer research questions three and four which compared measures of academic and recreational reading attitudes by gender and ethnicity. Research questions five, six, and seven were answered using correlational research to determine if measures of reading attitudes were related to the scores on the language arts portion of the MCT2. The results of data analyzed to answer the research questions revealed that overall the sixth grade participants in this study had reading attitudes that were less than positive. The results also revealed that males had reading attitudes that were more positive than females. The results of the analysis of reading attitudes by ethnicity revealed that African American students had higher measures of positive recreational reading attitudes than Caucasian students and the students in the other ethnic group while Caucasian students had higher measures of positive academic reading attitudes than African American students and students in the other ethnic group. The only significant relationship discovered between measures of reading attitude and MCT2 scores was a very weak relationship between measures of academic reading attitudes and the language arts section of the MCT2. The study concludes with recommendations for further research.

Book excerpt: This volume links theoretical and instructional approaches on how reading is motivated and assessed, and examines the interrelationship between reading motivation and achievement among boys and girls in culturally and geographically different settings. Much of the research on children’s reading has focused on cognitive processes; however, reading is an activity that also requires interest and motivation. These attitudes are generally defined as readers’ affect toward reading and their consequence is that children with more positive attitudes are more motivated to read. Taking into account the variability that exists within the notion of gender and age, this volume aims to examine and scrutinize previous research on the topic, as well as test theories on how the different dimensions of reading motivation vary with gender, in relation to cultural issues, motivational constructs, such as engagement and classroom climate, the role of emotions, interests and attitudes towards reading, among others. The book will be of interest to researchers, educators, graduate students, and other professionals working in the area of literacy, reading motivation, reading achievement and gender differences.

Book excerpt: This monograph analyses and describes successful educational actions with a specific focus on vulnerable groups (i.e. youth, migrants, cultural groups e.g. Roma, women, and people with disabilities). Concrete data that shows success in school performance in subject matters such as math or language will be provided, as well as children, teachers and families accounts of the impact of this success. Alongside, there is an analysis of the relationship between these children’s educational performance with their inclusion or exclusion from different areas of society (i.e. housing, health, employment, and social and political participation). Many studies have already diagnosed and described the causes of educational and social exclusion of these vulnerable groups. This monograph, however, provides solutions, that is, actions for success identified through the INCLUD-ED project, thus providing both, contrasted data and solid theoretical background and development. Some examples of these actions are interactive groups (or heterogeneous grouping in the classroom with reorganisation of human resources), extension of the learning time, homework clubs, tutored libraries, family and community educative participation, family education, or dialogic literary gatherings. All these actions have been defined as successful educational actions, which mean that they lead to both efficiency and equity. Finally, recommendations for policy and practice are included and discussed.

The lowest achieving students generally have a negative attitude towards reading which hinders their academic progress. By using the guided reading levels and reading achievement levels as established by Fountas and Pinnell, this study determine if achievement in reading is connected to the attitude of the student. The attitudes towards reading will be surveyed on a pre and posttest given orally. By motivating the variable group of participants to read, through an incentive program where participants receive stars for each part of the Fountas and Pinnell Leveled Literacy Intervention daily lesson they successfully complete, I hypothesized that participants would be motivated to try their best and soak in more information during guided reading time which would lead to higher reading achievement.

Book excerpt: Abstract: This quantitative study examined the relationship between third- and fourth-grade Latina/o students’ reading attitudes, home literacy environment, and reading performance. The current study sought to add to the growing literature on the impact affective variables, such as reading attitudes and home literacy environment, have on culturally and linguistically diverse student groups. Participants of the study were recruited from an urban elementary school in Southern California. Findings indicate Latina/o student participants held overall negative attitudes toward reading and reading attitudes were found to be a better predictor of student reading performance across grade level than the measure of home literacy environment. Overall, measures of reading attitude and home literacy environment appear to be valuable tools in providing additional insight as to why a student may be struggling in their reading performance. Limitations and areas for future research are discussed.

Book excerpt: This study set out to explore the relationships between reading and writing; to investigate and describe the effect of an integrated reading and writing program on reading achievement, reading attitude, writing attitude, and self-concept as learner; and to report parents' involvement in and reaction to the program. To this end an integrated reading and writing program was implemented in a grade two classroom and evaluated, using a case study design to report the results. The research was based on the following four questions. Does the integrated reading and writing program provide: -- 1. improved students' performance in reading? -- 2. improved students' self-concepts as learners? -- 3. improved students' attitudes towards reading? -- 4. improved students' attitudes towards writing? -- The investigation also sought to explore relationships between reading achievement and (1) self-concept, (2) attitudes towards reading, (3) attitudes towards writing and (4) parental involvement. -- The researcher/teacher designed an integrated reading and writing program to accommodate theories of language learning presented in the review of the literature. Students were administered pretests and posttests in reading achievement, self-concept, attitudes towards reading and attitudes towards writing to determine if the program affected these variables. Descriptive data were collected throughout the study to ascertain if activities that were specified by the theory were being effectively operationalized and implemented. -- Results at the end of the program indicated positive answers to all four questions. Students' performances on the standardized reading pretest and posttest were compared with the norms and showed that the mean gain of the study group in both vocabulary and comprehension was greater than the Canadian national mean gain. Average reading growth in months for the study group was 9.1 months in vocabulary and 12.7 months in comprehension and greater than the expected seven month growth. Statistical analysis confirmed that the gains in comprehension were significant at the .05 level. 88.5% of the students showed an improvement in self-concept. 84.6% showed improved attitudes towards reading and 92.3% showed improved attitudes towards writing. -- Statistical analysis showed a positive correlation between reading achievement and (1) reading attitudes and (2) self-concept. The study gave evidence that writing activities can positively affect reading comprehension but there was no significant correlation between reading achievement and writing attitudes. Although parental invovlement was high, it was not significantly correlated with the reading achievement of the students.
