Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between the self-body cathexis of obese women and their attitudes toward physical activity. Fifty inventories were used for the research in this project. The volunteer subjects' ages ranged from 18 to 45 with a mean age of 28.9 years. The subjects" weight ranged from 20 percent to 120 percent over desirable weight. The females were chosen on the basis of their current weight being 20 percent or more higher than their desirable weight, according to the chart developed by the Build and Blood Pressure Study (48). The measuring devices used were the Jourard and Secord Self-Body Cathexis Inventory and the Kenyon Attitude Toward Physical Activity Inventory. The data from the inventories were statistically analyzed using primarily the Pearson product moment correlation. The .05 level of significance was selected for rejecting, the null hypotheses. The results of the study revealed that the obese women surveyed had average feelings of satisfaction concerning their self and body images. These women had a highly significant positive relationship between their body and their self image. The women in this study who weighed less had a more positive body image. Also, the less the women weighed the more positive their attitude toward physical activity. In general these obese women believed that the positive aspects of physical activity included catharsis, a social experience, an ascetic experience, an improvement of one's health and fitness and the pursuit of vertigo. They did not believe that physical activity was an aesthetic experience. Those women who believed that physical activity was a social experience or to improve one's health and fitness also believed it was for the purpose of catharsis. There were no significant relationships between their attitude toward physical activity and their self or body cathexis.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to identify significant differences in body composition, body cathexis, and attitudes toward obesity of women in various age groups involved in different levels of physical exercise. A total of 216 women, ranging in age from 17 to 64, took part in this study. They were classified into three age groups: col legeage, beyond college-age, and middle-aged, then further divided into three exercise categories: very active, moderately active, and relatively inactive. All subjects completed the Physical Activity and Body Cathexis Survey. Then the subjects submitted themselves to a series of skinfold fat measurement. In determining the subjects' feelings toward their bodies, the Secord and Jourard's Body Cathexis Scale (1953) was utilized to collect the data. Bray's Obesity Attitude Scale (1973) was employed to investigate the subjects' attitudes toward obesity. The prediction equation developed by Jackson et al. (1980) was used to determine the subjects' body density. The measurements were taken at triceps, thigh, and suprailium skinfolds. The percentage of body fat was derived from the formula of Siri's (1961). The results indicated that the middle-aged women had a higher percentage of body fat and lower amount of lean body mass than the beyond college-age women. There was, however, no significant difference between the body composition of the col lege-age and the beyond college-age women. Different levels of physical activity performed by women had significant effects on their body fat percentage and their body cathexis. Subjects in the very active level of physical exercise showed the lowest percentage of body fat and the most positive attitudes toward their bodies. Attitudes toward obesity between women, young or old, exercising or not exercising, were not significantly different. Women's obesity attitudes were not affected by either age or levels of physical activity.

Book excerpt: This study attempted to ferret out specific psychological variables of self-esteem and body-cathexis that enable some women to overcome gender stereotypes of body image and exercise, thereby allowing them to engage in weight training. The author utilized a sample of women from a health club facility and compared women who primarily weight trained to women who primarily attended aerobics classes on several variables. The study explored four main questions : (1) Do women who weight train and women who participate in aerobics classes differ in their levels of global self-esteem and/or body-cathexis? (2) Do women who weight train possess a more masculine or androgynous gender role orientation compared to women who take aerobics classes? (3) Do women's reasons for exercising influence whether they choose to weight train or take aerobics classes? (4) Is there a cohort effect of age that influences whether women will choose to engage in weight training exercises or aerobics classes? The sample consisted of 141 women between the ages of , 16 and 57. Rosenberg's Self-Esteem Scale (1965) measured global selfesteem; Tucker's (1985) version of the Body Cathexis Scale measured body-cathexis; Bern's Sex Role Inventory (1974) assessed gender role orientation; Silberstein's Reasons for Exercise Inventory (1988) assessed reasons for exercising; the author's Demographic Questionnaire assessed variables including age and frequency of exercise. Results indicated that women in this sample who took aerobics classes chose weight control as the most important reason to exercise compared to women who engaged in weight training. The study also demonstrated that women who weight trained participated in aerobics classes more often then the women who used aerobics classes as their only means of exercise. Other hypotheses explored were not supported by this study. These results suggest the need for future research about the relationships between self-esteem, body image, and exercise for women.

Book excerpt: Disordered eating attitudes and exercise behaviors are important factors when studying the continuum of eating disorders. An individual's attitude toward eating may influence other behaviors and thoughts toward health and exercise. A convenience sample study was used to examine the relationship between eating attitudes, reasons for exercise, and age among 190 physically active female college students ages 18 to 57. Participants completed the Disordered Eating Attitude Scale (DEAS) and Reasons for Exercise Inventory (REI). Level of exercise was self-reported by the participants and categorized as low, moderate, or high according to the Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans. Pearson's Correlation determined that DEAS scores were significantly related to exercising to control weight (p=.000) and improve appearance (p=.000). There was no association between level of exercise and DEAS score or between age and DEAS score. This suggests that the college females in the study hold high regard to body image and exercise for non-health related reasons.

Book excerpt: BACKGROUND lifestyle interventions consisting of physical activity and/or diet are known to be essential for weight loss. Its implementation in the daily life of people with overweight or obesity is hindered by multiple barriers. To obtain successful behavioural change, it is recommended to take psychological factors and adherence to treatment programs into account when prescribing weight management programs. AIM this randomized controlled trial investigates the changes in psychological factors such as self-efficacy and adherence during a 6-month intervention program, consisting of dietary instructions and/or exercise. METHOD women with a BMI =27 kg/m2 are randomized in a diet or combination group, consisting of both diet and exercise. All participants receive a personal interview, based on the principles of motivational interviewing (MI), and by means of a questionnaire (S-weight) that determines the stages of change, the kind of motivation at baseline is reflected. Self-reported (general and exercise) self-efficacy and habitual physical activity are measured by questionnaires (General Self-Efficacy Scale, Exercise Self-Efficacy Scale and Baecke) at baseline, after 3 and 6 months intervention, as well as adherence by a numeric scale. Anthropometrical measurements such as body weight (kg), BMI (kg/m2), fat mass (%) and fat free mass (kg) are also investigated. A sensitivity analysis was also carried out including women with higher levels of adherence, whereby the same above mentioned was also analyzed. RESULTS in 54 women, changes in adherence, self-reported self-efficacy, physical activity, body weight and composition were assessed after 3 and 6 months intervention. No statistically significant differences were found between the diet and combination group for changes in adherence, anthropometrical and psychological outcomes after 3 and 6 months intervention (p > 0,05). Book excerpt: Purpose: The purpose of the study was to determine the relationship between achievement self-esteem, self acceptance self-esteem and body composition in college women. Methods: One-hundred and fifty eight college women were recruited to participate in the study. Participants were healthy, between the age of 18 and 25 yrs, not taking medication that would alter metabolism, and able to participate in physical activity without restriction. As part of the study the participants filled out the Worth Index, which measured level of self-acceptance and achievement self-esteem. The questionnaire included four subscales: basic human worth, performance factor, personal security and appearance. Body composition was assessed using the BOD POD. Results: Participants in the study were 19.9 ± 1.7 yrs, had a BMI of 22.5 ± 3.2 kg/m2 and a percent body fat of 26.4 ± 6.4. Source of self-esteem was primarily self-acceptance self-esteem with participants on average scoring 65 ± 11 out of 84 (high moderate) compared to an achievement self-esteem score of 35 ± 10 out of 84 (low moderate). When evaluating the subscales a similar trend appears with the exception of the performance factor, which was more normally distributed.
