Book excerpt: Three tests of power were conducted with 19 female athletes (18-22 yr.) from the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse (N = 14 volleyball, N = 5 basketball). The vertical jump (VJ), Margaria power test (MPT) and the Cybex leg power test (CLPT) were completed over the 3pday period during the week immediately following each respective athlete season. A Pearson Product-Moment correlation coefficient was used to determine if any significant positive correlations (p

Book excerpt: This report describes an investigation of the tensile, flexural, and impact properties of 10 selected types of phenolic molding materials. The materials were studied to see in what ways and to what extent their properties satisfy some assumptions on which the theory of strength of materials is based: namely, (a) isotropy, (b) linear stress-strain relationship for small strains, and (c) homogeneity. The effect of changing the dimensions of tensile and flexural specimens and the span-depth ratio in flexural tsts were studied. The strengths of molded boxes and flexural specimens cut from the boxes were compared with results of tests on standard test specimens molded from teh respective materials.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite the recent rapid growth in machine learning and predictive analytics, many of the statistical questions that are faced by researchers and practitioners still involve explaining why something is happening. Regression analysis is the best ‘swiss army knife’ we have for answering these kinds of questions. This book is a learning resource on inferential statistics and regression analysis. It teaches how to do a wide range of statistical analyses in both R and in Python, ranging from simple hypothesis testing to advanced multivariate modelling. Although it is primarily focused on examples related to the analysis of people and talent, the methods easily transfer to any discipline. The book hits a ‘sweet spot’ where there is just enough mathematical theory to support a strong understanding of the methods, but with a step-by-step guide and easily reproducible examples and code, so that the methods can be put into practice immediately. This makes the book accessible to a wide readership, from public and private sector analysts and practitioners to students and researchers. Key Features: 16 accompanying datasets across a wide range of contexts (e.g. academic, corporate, sports, marketing) Clear step-by-step instructions on executing the analyses Clear guidance on how to interpret results Primary instruction in R but added sections for Python coders Discussion exercises and data exercises for each of the main chapters Final chapter of practice material and datasets ideal for class homework or project work.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, the author has shown how the mental test idea was evolved out of the laboratory study of individual differences by psychologists, how the individual and then the group intelligence tests were developed, the application of statistical methods to the interpretation of the results, the creation of the different types of scales, the extension of the mental test idea in new directions, the technique and theory of the tests, the uses of the different types of mental tests, and their reliability, and has closed his treatment with two chapters on the interpretation of what the tests really measure and the nature of intelligence itself. The work of hundreds of individual investigators has been organized into a systematic treatise, and the place and work of each have been given their proper setting as parts of a great movement. The volume is accordingly offered to teachers of college and university classes in Mental Tests with confidence that it will prove as useful in this field as the texts now in use have done in the field of educational tests. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Energy distance is a statistical distance between the distributions of random vectors, which characterizes equality of distributions. The name energy derives from Newton's gravitational potential energy, and there is an elegant relation to the notion of potential energy between statistical observations. Energy statistics are functions of distances between statistical observations in metric spaces. The authors hope this book will spark the interest of most statisticians who so far have not explored E-statistics and would like to apply these new methods using R. The Energy of Data and Distance Correlation is intended for teachers and students looking for dedicated material on energy statistics, but can serve as a supplement to a wide range of courses and areas, such as Monte Carlo methods, U-statistics or V-statistics, measures of multivariate dependence, goodness-of-fit tests, nonparametric methods and distance based methods. •E-statistics provides powerful methods to deal with problems in multivariate inference and analysis. •Methods are implemented in R, and readers can immediately apply them using the freely available energy package for R. •The proposed book will provide an overview of the existing state-of-the-art in development of energy statistics and an overview of applications. •Background and literature review is valuable for anyone considering further research or application in energy statistics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Statistical Power Analysis explains the key concepts in statistical power analysis and illustrates their application in both tests of traditional null hypotheses (that treatments or interventions have no effect in the population) and in tests of the minimum-effect hypotheses (that the population effects of treatments or interventions are so small that they can be safely treated as unimportant). It provides readers with the tools to understand and perform power analyses for virtually all the statistical methods used in the social and behavioral sciences. Brett Myors and Kevin Murphy apply the latest approaches of power analysis to both null hypothesis and minimum-effect testing using the same basic unified model. This book starts with a review of the key concepts that underly statistical power. It goes on to show how to perform and interpret power analyses, and the ways to use them to diagnose and plan research. We discuss the uses of power analysis in correlation and regression, in the analysis of experimental data, and in multilevel studies. This edition includes new material and new power software. The programs used for power analysis in this book have been re-written in R, a language that is widely used and freely available. The authors include R codes for all programs, and we have also provided a web-based app that allows users who are not comfortable with R to perform a wide range of analyses using any computer or device that provides access to the web. Statistical Power Analysis helps readers design studies, diagnose existing studies, and understand why hypothesis tests come out the way they do. The fifth edition includes updates to all chapters to accommodate the most current scholarship, as well as recalculations of all examples. This book is intended for graduate students and faculty in the behavioral and social sciences; researchers in other fields will find the concepts and methods laid out here valuable and applicable to studies in many domains.

This book was released on 2014-04-04 with total page 572 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This classic text on multiple regression is noted for its nonmathematical, applied, and data-analytic approach. Readers profit from its verbal-conceptual exposition and frequent use of examples. The applied emphasis provides clear illustrations of the principles and provides worked examples of the types of applications that are possible. Researchers learn how to specify regression models that directly address their research questions. An overview of the fundamental ideas of multiple regression and a review of bivariate correlation and regression and other elementary statistical concepts provide a strong foundation for understanding the rest of the text. The third edition features an increased emphasis on graphics and the use of confidence intervals and effect size measures, and an accompanying CD with data for most of the numerical examples along with the computer code for SPSS, SAS, and SYSTAT. Applied Multiple Regression serves as both a textbook for graduate students and as a reference tool for researchers in psychology, education, health sciences, communications, business, sociology, political science, anthropology, and economics. An introductory knowledge of statistics is required. Self-standing chapters minimize the need for researchers to refer to previous chapters.
