Book Synopsis Behind the Curve by : Joshua P. Howe
Download or read book Behind the Curve written by Joshua P. Howe and published by University of Washington Press. This book was released on 2014-04-01 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1958, Charles David Keeling began measuring the concentration of carbon dioxide in the earth's atmosphere at the Mauna Loa Observatory in Hawaii. His project kicked off a half century of research that has expanded our knowledge of climate change. Despite more than fifty years of research, however, our global society has yet to find real solutions to the problem of global warming. Why? In Behind the Curve, Joshua Howe attempts to answer this question. He explores the history of global warming from its roots as a scientific curiosity to its place at the center of international environmental politics. The book follows the story of rising CO2—illustrated by the now famous Keeling Curve—through a number of historical contexts, highlighting the relationships among scientists, environmentalists, and politicians as those relationships changed over time. The nature of the problem itself, Howe explains, has privileged scientists as the primary spokespeople for the global climate. But while the “science first” forms of advocacy they developed to fight global warming produced more and better science, the primacy of science in global warming politics has failed to produce meaningful results. In fact, an often exclusive focus on science has left advocates for change vulnerable to political opposition and has limited much of the discussion to debates about the science itself. As a result, while we know much more about global warming than we did fifty years ago, CO2 continues to rise. In 1958, Keeling first measured CO2 at around 315 parts per million; by 2013, global CO2 had soared to 400 ppm. The problem is not getting better - it's getting worse. Behind the Curve offers a critical and levelheaded look at how we got here.
Book Synopsis The World Has Curves by : Julia Savacool
Download or read book The World Has Curves written by Julia Savacool and published by Rodale Books. This book was released on 2009-09-15 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: American women today are faced with a paradox: they uphold an ideal of beauty—long, lean, toned—that increasingly bears little resemblance to truth about their size. Women around the world are spending more time, money, and energy pursuing this ideal than ever before. So why does the "perfect body" remain so elusive? And why does the definition of "ideal" vary so widely between countries and cultures? The World Has Curves is journalist Julia Savacool's attempt to answer these questions. She takes readers on a world tour—from China, where the plastic surgery industry is booming; to South Africa, where a heavier shape signals health in a country ravaged by disease; to Afghanistan, where the burka once again reigns supreme. Through extensive reporting and intimate interviews, she offers readers an understanding of how body ideals—in America and abroad—have come to be inextricably linked to the economics of a culture and the impact of globalization. From news programs to reality shows, from prime time comedy to national advertising campaigns, the topic of women's bodies and our collective judgment of the perfect shape is ever-present. This engaging narrative is newsworthy and provocative and will advance our cultural conversation.
Book Synopsis The World Is Curved by : David M. Smick
Download or read book The World Is Curved written by David M. Smick and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2008-09-04 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: David Smick keeps a low profile, but experts consider him one of the most insightful financial market strategists in the world. For more than two decades, he has conferred with central bankers (such as Alan Greenspan and Ben Bernanke) and advised top Wall Street executives and investors, from George Soros to Michael Steinhardt to Stan Druckenmiller. Political leaders (from Bill Bradley to Jack Kemp) have regularly sought his policy advice. The World Is Curved picks up where Thomas Friedman’s The World Is Flat left off, taking readers on an insider’s tour through the private offices of central bankers, finance ministers, even prime ministers. Smick reveals how today’s risky environment came to be—and why the mortgage mess is a symptom of potentially far more devastating trouble. He wrestles with the two questions on everyone’s mind: How bad could things really get in today’s volatile economy? And what can we do about it? Drawing on riveting anecdotes in language anyone can understand, Smick explains: Why the churning cauldron we call China (the next great bubble to burst) represents a powerful threat to everyone’s pocketbook How Japanese housewives have taken control of their nation’s savings, and why it matters to us How greed-driven bankers and investment bankers have put everyone’s pensions and 401(k)s at risk Why today’s “incredible shrinking central banks” may not be able to save us when the next crisis hits Why the big-money Russian, Chinese, Saudi, and Dubai sovereign wealth funds represent a tectonic shift in global financial power, away from the United States, Europe, and Japan Why the world desperately needs a “big think” financial doctrine to guide today’s dangerous ocean of money The World Is Curved is the rare book that speaks simultaneously to the Wall Street, Washington, and London elite, yet its apt storytelling shows Main Street readers how to survive in these turbulent times.

Book Synopsis Economic Growth And Transition: Econometric Analysis Of Lim's S-curve Hypothesis by : Hui Ying Sng
Download or read book Economic Growth And Transition: Econometric Analysis Of Lim's S-curve Hypothesis written by Hui Ying Sng and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2010-04-16 with total page 149 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the first of its kind to systematically analyze and apply Lim Chong Yah's S-Curve Hypothesis to the various facets of economic growth and economic transition. By augmenting the mathematical and economical sophistication of the hypothesis, this book extends the S-Curve hypothesis to provide further insight into economic growth and transition. It also utilizes a construction of a stochastic growth model to provide the microeconomic foundation for the S-Curve hypothesis. This model resolves the puzzle of why some developing countries experience economic take-off, while others do not. The book analyzes and extends discussion on the S-Curve, and also applies the S-Curve hypothesis to predict long-term growth in Japan and Singapore. It serves as an excellent resource for people interested in Lim's growth theory.
