Book excerpt: Very flat, Kildare. It is the flatness of this great limestone plain with its rich pastures and its proximity to Dublin that has made Kildare a place of importance since the dawn of history. Early Christian settlements prospered here of which the Convent of St Brigid was the most famous. The Normans, with their infallible eye for good land, quickly made it their own and built a series of great tower houses and castles to defend the Pale from the Gaels of Wicklow and the south midlands. The county was the home of the Geraldines, the Leinster branch of the FitzGerald family, which completely dominated political life in late medieval Ireland, and later went on to be the only ducal family in Ireland.

Book excerpt: The period from 1790 to 1803, one of upheaval and turbulence, has witnessed a surge in historical interest in the past two decades. This study examines the politicisation and rebellion in County Kildare. During the 1790s, a vocal liberal establishment centered on the Duke of Leinster, Catholic and reformist politics, militant Defenderism, and a large United Irish society involving prominent liberals, all of which contributed to the politicisation of the Kildare populace. Against this background a faction loyal to the Dublin government attempted to stabilize and secure the county, with the increasing support of the administration. The 1798 rebellion engulfed Kildare, lasting two months and involving thousands of rebels. After initial success it evolved into a 'fugitive' war centered on the Bog of Allen, where rebels held government forces at bay for weeks. During the post-rebellion period radicalism persisted at a local level and thousands of Kildare men were prepared to participate in 'Emmet's rebellion' in 1803. In examining Kildare in this period the study seeks to contribute to the wider debate on the forces of radicalism and reaction which polarized Irish society in the 1790s. -- Publisher description.

Book excerpt: This dictionary attempts in nearly 2,200 entries to cover all workers in the various branches of the Dublin book trade until the Act of Union in 1800. All grades of workers from apprentice to master, and papermakers, engravers, hawkers and other peripheral traders are considered, as well as the all-important printers and booksellers. Entries naturally vary from one or two lines to one or two pages in length. The aim is to illustrate the working life of each subject by reference to contemporary sources such as records of the stationer's Guild, state papers, imprints, newspaper advertisements, customers' accounts, etc, with documentation for each statement made. Entries will thus give practical clues to dating undated books, as well as provide a basis for further research into individual traders' work and the Dublin trade as a whole. Some account of the history and organization of the Dublin Guild of St Luke (cutlers, painter-stainers, and stationers) appears as introduction.

Book excerpt: This is a ten-year supplement to the six volumes already published in the series Index to British Literary Biography, fully indexed for consistency with earlier volumes. The series provides a comprehensive record of the writings that describe and study the history of the printed book in Britain, and works of bibliography and textual criticism from the earliest times. The period covered by this volume was bibliographically very active, witnessing a great renewal of interest in the history of the book. The volume has seven main sections: "General Bibliographies of and Guides to British Literature," "General and Period Bibliography," "Regional Bibliography," "Book Production and Distribution," "Forms, Genres, and Subjects," and "Authors". Complete information about each book or journal article is provided in standard form, and in many instances objective annotations are given, affording additional access to the items through a very detailed index.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book introduces the local history practitioner to the world of maps - the special character (and appeal) of maps as an historical source, why they are invaluable in local history research, and questions that must be asked of them. The historical background to map creation in Ireland is outlined, with details on the major classes of cartographic and associated material and the repositories wherein they may be found. The Plantation series, travel and county maps, maps as part of published reports and journals, military mapping, estate and property mapping, and maritime maps, historic Ordnance Survey and Valuation Office maps, and more recent OS mapping, including the 1:50,000 Discovery series, are discussed. A section on essential map reading skills, including matters of scale, representation and accuracy, will help equip the researcher to explore this coded world. Step-by-step guidance for starting out to locate maps relevant to one's study area is provided. Case studies of working with maps in local history are offered as practical examples of what can be done, and guidelines for map-making are also included.
