Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume, told through excerpts from the diary of Mary Ames, relates the experiences of two Northern white women, Mary Ames and Emily Bliss, who were employed by the Freedman's Bureau to open a school for the benefit of former slaves. It tells of their journey to Edisto Island, South Carolina, where liberated slaves had been settled after Reconstruction, and of the ruinous living conditions suffered by freedmen and teachers alike. The women managed to establish a school with well over one hundred students, both children and adults. The diary tells of Miss Ames's dealings with former slaves, documents their social and religious life, and reports on the daily difficulties of life in the Reconstruction South. The school was closed by the Freedman's Bureau after a little more than a year.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Catechism of Ichthyology: Being a Familiar Introduction to the Natural History of Fishes, Scientifically Arranged Q. By what means are the bodies of fish secured from the macerating influence of the water? A. Besides a strong scaly covering with which many species are furnished, they are protected from the influence of the waters by a glutinous matter, which is an effectual preservative against the ill effects which might otherwise arise from the element in which they dwell. Q. Do fish possess the external senses in perfection? A. It is impossible to answer this question with certainty; but it is probable that their scaly covering renders their sense of touching very imperfect; that from their hard bony palate, they can have but little delicacy of taste; the density of the fluid in which they live must render their sense of smelling not very acute; and it is very doubtful whether they hear at all. Q. Is not their sight very quick? A. Their sight is supposed to be quick, but, from the structure of the eye, there is reason to believe that their powers of vision do not enable them to discern objects at a considerable distance. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book traces the discovery of Australia’s fishes from the earliest days of taxonomy to the first part of the 20th century. It provides a unique insight into the diverse pathways by which Australia’s fish were discovered and outlines the history of early maritime explorations in Australia that collected natural history specimens. The book covers the life and work of each of the most important discoverers, and assesses their accomplishments and the limitations of their work. Discovery of Australia’s Fishes is distinctive in that a biographic approach is integrated with chronological descriptions of the discovery of the Australian fish fauna. Many of northern Australia’s fishes are found in parts of the Indian and western Pacific oceans. The book covers the work of collectors who travelled outside Australia, together with that of the British and European zoologists who received and described their collections. The account ceases at 1930, the year the first modern checklist of Australian fishes was published. 2012 Whitley Award Commendation for Historical Zoology.
