Book excerpt: This qualitative study provides a foundational perspective, teaching challenges and solutions, and an applicable plan for the conductor to facilitate elevated learning in the wind band setting. Existing research suggests that in order for students to become more deeply involved in quality music-making during rehearsals, the director must first plan and prepare accordingly. This study specifically explores the role of the conductor in planning for (1) orchestrated immersion (2) relaxed alertness and (3) active processing, to ensure students are actively involved in making musical decisions. The researcher chose the classic piece of literature for wind band titled Air for Band, by composer Frank Erickson, through which specific teaching challenges and solutions are examined. This thesis provides an applicable plan for the conductor's immersion which includes supplemental materials and rehearsal techniques designed for elevated student learning. Although this research is specific to the preparation and rehearsing of Air for Band, the information provided can be transferred to any piece of quality wind band literature. This research should be helpful for any conductor wanting to create a deep and meaningful "environment of immersion" in the wind band setting.

Book excerpt: What would you ask the leading band directors of our time in a one-on-one conversation? Paula A. Crider, a seasoned and distinguished band director in her own right, shares the wealth of knowledge gleaned from her interviews of the extraordinary personalities who have changed the landscape of the wind band world in this remarkable book. With insight and clarity of thought, she asks the probing questions that prompt stories of talent, work, sacrifice, ingenuity, bravery, and determination. These pioneering and innovative conductors share their concept of band sound, views on score marking, advice to music majors and young band directors, thoughts on how to advance the wind band genre, the elements of their musical success, and much more about the art and craft of conducting a band. In calling forth these thoughts, the author inspires these leaders of the wind band profession to remind us all not only of where we have come from, but also provide a stirring handoff to us and to future generations.

Ideal for the advanced instrumental music conductor seeking to look beyond basic conducting technique, this work breaks the multidimensional activity of working with an ensemble, orchestra, or band into its constituent components. Advanced students of conducting will find within the full range of conducting activities: • Chapters on the infrastructure of the rehearsal, the rehearsal environment, 10 rehearsal essentials, score study, music imagery, inner singing, and rehearsal procedures (with an emphasis on an integrated approach to rehearsing) • The technical priorities of intonation and tuning, rhythm patterns, ensemble sonority (tone, balance, blend, color and texture), and articulation • The musical priorities of tempo and ensemble precision, phrasing and the musical line, style and interpretation, dynamics and musical expression • Emphasizing the expectations of 21st-century conductors, the challenges of conducting and rehearsing contemporary music, preparing conductor profiles and self-evaluations, and moving from the rehearsal process to concert performance Conducting and Rehearsing the Instrumental Music Ensemble is a great resource for teachers and students of conducting, as well as current conductors wishing to further hone their skills.

Book excerpt: Verbal direction given by the conductor to address issues related to historical, or performance-based aspects of the music. The findings were based on the identification and comparison of similarities found among the case study conductors with regard to rehearsal philosophy and related procedures. The study found that consistent with the conductors were the utilization of an effective rate of pacing, a systematic rehearsal format, timely interjections of instructional comments and a philosophically-based plan for the use of rehearsal procedures. In addition, the study established related patterns among the conductor with regard to teaching, conducting, and personal skills that are contributing factors to the effectiveness of the wind band rehearsal.

Book excerpt: Behind The Baton is for conductors in the world of music education, and/or community or civic band, orchestra, and chorus. With more than 50 years of conducting experience, nationally known composer/arranger Peter Hazzard has always treated his ensembles, be they high school and college students or adults, as professionals. Allowances made for their age and abilities, he gives them respect and expects the same from them. The tips and suggestions offered in this book cover chorus, band and orchestra including rehearsal techniques, programming and the standard set up of a concert program. It is in the spirit of 'paying it forward' that this book was written. Behind the Baton is not only a clever title but is also an indication of the substance and wisdom of the writer. Read, rehearse, reflect, repeat. There is much value here not just for the novice. Veterans will find themselves saying, "Why didn't I do this before?" H. Scott Campbell, Retired Choral Director and Director of Performing Arts - Farmington, CT Public Schools. This book is chock full of great, useful ideas for the beginning conductor. Experienced conductors will get validation for much of what they know already, plus many new ideas. Thomas R. Martin, Musical Director, Conductor, Composer, Educator, Pianist - Keene, NH

This book covers all the important conferences, concerts, events, initiatives, and compositions created for wind bands/ensembles during the first decade of the twenty-first century. In gathering information for this book, the author examined hundreds of scores, listened to dozens of recordings, attended conferences, interviewed wind band/ensemble director-conductors, and surveyed numerous professional journals and magazines. The result is a book that provides a panorama view of the American wind band/ensemble scene from 2000-2010.
