Book excerpt: Annotated bibliography covering two centuries of scholarly criticism on the extensive corpus of medieval saints' legends. with the assistance of Margaret RogersonSaints' legends are being increasingly recognised as one of the most important genres of the middle ages, and attract much critical attention. This volume surveys the scholarly literatureof the nineteenth and twentieth centuries on the extensive Middle English corpus. It also provides a conspectus of the genre's history in the Middle English period, and its place in the development of the modern discipline of Middle English, while both the introduction and the annotations give attention to the problematic boundaries between genres and to the issues involved in separating out texts from their manuscript contexts. General studies of the corpus as a whole are covered, as well as discussions and editions of individual legends, of the various extended cycles of legends, and of sermon collections that include hagiographic legends and exempla; the volume has been structured so as to provide an overview of the research on major works [for example the South English Legendary and St Erkenwald], and authors such as Osbern Bokenham, John Capgrave, William Caxton and John Mirk. It includesan Index of Scholars and Critics keyed to the Bibliography, an Index of Middle English Texts that covers all works, of whatever genre, mentioned in the annotations, and an Index of Manuscripts that gathers the references to the over 170 manuscripts cited.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The poetry we call 'alliterative' is recorded in English from the seventh century until the sixteenth, and includes Caedmon's 'Hymn', Beowulf, Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, and Piers Plowman. These are some of the most admired works of medieval English literature, and also among the most enigmatic. The formal practice of alliterative poets exceeded the conceptual grasp of medieval literary theory; theorists are still playing catch-up today. This book explains the distinctive nature of alliterative meter, explores its differences from subsequent accentual-syllabic forms, and advances a reformed understanding of medieval English literary history. The startling formal variety of Piers Plowman and other Middle English alliterative poems comes into sharper focus when viewed in diachronic perspective: the meter was in transition; to understand it, we need to know where it came from and where it was headed at the moment it died out.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A folk-taxonomy is a semantic field that represents the particular way in which a language imposes structure and order upon the myriad impressions of human experience and perception. Thus, for example, the experience of color in modem English is structured around an inventory of twelve "basic" color terms; but languages vary in the number of basic color terms used, from thirteen or fourteen terms to as few as two or three. Anthropological linguists have been interested in the comparative study of folk-taxonomies across contemporary languages, and in their studies they have sometimes proposed evolutionary models for the development and elaboration of these taxonomies. The evolutionary models have implications for historical linguistics, but there have been very few studies of the historical development of a folk-taxonomy within a language or within a language family. Folk-Taxonomies in Early English undertakes this task for English, and to some extent for the Germanic and Indo-European language families. The semantic fields studied are basic color terms, seasons of the year, geometric shapes, the five senses, the folk-psychology of mind and soul, and basic plant and animal life-forms. Anderson's emphasis is on folk-taxonomies in Old and Middle English, and also on the implications of semantic analysis for our reading of early English literary texts.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The essays in this volume consider a range of poetic texts written in England between the twelfth and fifteenth centuries, with the exception of works by Chaucer, and represent some of the exciting new developments in medieval studies over the last twenty years. The collection explores and interrogates the established canon of Middle English poetry and includes several studies of two major poems, Sir Gawain and the Green Knight and Piers Plowman, and essays on some less well-known works, including Havelok the Dane, The Owl and the Nightingale and The Flower and the Leaf. In a field that has been dominated by historical scholarship and conservative new criticism, Medieval English Poetry brings together some of the most controversial work currently being done in Middle English studies; this collection reveals the strength and depth of this research in feminist, Marxist, historicist, reader-response and deconstructionist method. It includes contributions from David Aers, Sheila Delany, Anne Middleton, and Lee Patterson. Stephanie Trigg's illuminating introduction examines some of the patterns that have emerged in the criticism of medieval literature this century, and pays particular attention to our constructions and definitions of the 'medieval'. The range of material covered, together with the detailed headnotes to each of the thirteen essays and the guide to further reading, make this book essential reading for all undergraduate and postgraduate students of Medieval English Literature.
