Book excerpt: Excerpt from Manual of Style: A Compilation of the Typographical Rules in Force at the University of Chicago Press, With Specimens of Types in Use The nature of the work Of the Press itself - and this will apply, to a greater or less extent, to any similar in stitution affected by local conditions - constantly calls for modification, now Of this rule, now Of that. It would be found impracticable, even were it desirable, to bring all its publications into rigid uniformity Of style and appearance. Methods have been devised, systems evolved, in certain lines Of work, which cannot be carried bodily over into the field Of others. Thus, in the matter of literary references, for instance, general practice has established certain usages in some of the sciences which it would not be advisable to ignore. Similar differences in practice may be observed in other directions. These deviations from the general rules will be found mentioned at the appropriate places in the body Of the book. On the whole, however, the rules are designed to govern all publications sent forth with the Oficial publishing imprint, The University Of Chicago Press. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Manual of Style: For Use of Copy Editors, Proof Readers, Operators, and Compositors Engaged in the Production of Executive, Congressional, and Departmental Publications The Manual of Style is intended to facilitate public printing, and if those submitting copy for publication will carefully observe the following suggestions, they will contribute materially toward this end: Copy should be typewritten if possible, unless reprint, and each page should begin with a paragraph. Proper names, foreign words, and technical terms should be plainly written and verified. Manuscript and typewritten copy in a foreign language should be marked accurately as to capitalization, punctuation, and other peculiarities. Signatures which are illegible should be carefully rewritten on the margin. Abbreviations should not be used except when they are to be printed as written, in which case they should be marked "follow." Reference marks in text and tables should be arranged alphabetically across each page, beginning with " " (See table, p. 41.) Capitalization and punctuation, when not peculiar to the publication in hand, are details which may be safely intrusted to the compositors and proof readers. Photographs, drawings, etc., for illustrations should accompany manuscript, each bearing the name of the publication in which it is to be inserted and the figure or plate number. The proper place for each illustration should be indicated on the copy by title, legend, or otherwise. When a publication is composed of several parts, a scheme of the desired arrangement should accompany the first installment of copy. Write on one side of the paper only. When both sides are used, duplicate copy should be furnished. Additional matter making more than one line to be inserted in manuscript copy should be written on a separate sheet attached to the page on which it is to be inserted and the place for its insertion clearly indicated. All corrections should be made on first proofs submitted, later proofs being intended only for the purpose of verification. Plate corrections should be avoided. Important changes from the style herein set forth should be clearly stated in a sheet of instructions accompanying the copy. Copy should be sent flat, if possible. Requisitions for work containing illustrations should give explicit instructions as to whether or not illustrations should be furnished by the Government Printing Office, giving the number, indicating the process of reproduction, and, if reduction is necessary, instructions on the margin of each illustration. The size should be as nearly uniform as practicable. Work containing illustrations should be accompanied by a letter certifying that the illustrations are necessary and relate entirely to the transaction of public business. (See 33 Stat. L., p. 1213.) Samples furnished for a particular purpose should be plainly marked, showing clearly whether intended for style of type, size of type page, paper, trim, lettering, or binding, etc. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The Chicago Manual of Style by University of Chicago Press Staff (Editor) - 9th Edition Countless publishing professionals have learned the details of their business from this classic guide for publishers, editors and writers. In the 1890s, a proofreader at the University of Chicago Press prepared a single sheet of typographic fundamentals intended as a guide for the University community. That sheet grew into a pamphlet, and the pamphlet grew into a book. Clear, concise, and replete with commonsense advice, The Chicago Manual of Style, offers the wisdom of a hundred years of editorial practice while including a wealth of new topics and updated perspectives. For anyone who works with words, whether on a page or computer screen, this continues to be the one reference book you simply must have. The Elements of Style by William Strunk jr. Asserting that one must first know the rules to break them, this classic reference book is a must-have for any student and conscientious writer. Intended for use in which the practice of composition is combined with the study of literature, it gives in brief space the prinicipal requirements of plain English style and concentrates attention on the rules of usage and principles of composition most commonly violated.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: My purpose in writing this book has been to present in as clear and understandable form as possible the important facts about ceramic materials and their use in pottery. The ceramic medium has a rich potential. It is so various and adaptable that each culture and each succeeding generation finds in it a new means of expression. As a medium, it is capable of great beauty of form, color, and texture, and its expressions are unique not only for variety but for permanence and utility as well. To make full use of the medium, the ceramist or potter not only needs skill, imagination, and artistic vision, but he also needs to have a sound knowledge of the technical side of the craft. This knowledge has not been easy to come by, and many of those seriously engaged in pottery have learned through endless experimentation and discouraging failures. It is hoped that the present work will enable the creative worker to go more directly to his goal in pottery, and that it will enable him to experiment intelligently and with a minimum of lost effort. While technical information must not be considered as an end in itself, it is a necessary prerequisite to a free and creative choice of means in ceramics. None of the subjects included are dealt with exhaustively, and I have tried not to overwhelm the reader with details. The information given is presented in as practical form as possible, and no more technical data or chemical theory is given than has been thought necessary to clarify the subject. This work is organized as follows: Part One—Clay Chapter I. Geologic Origins of Clay Chapter 2. The Chemical Composition of Clay Chapter 3. The Physical Nature of Clay Chapter 4. Drying and Firing Clay Chapter 5. Kinds of Clay Chapter 6. Clay Bodies Chapter 7. Mining and Preparing Clay Part Two—Glazes Chapter 8. The Nature of Glass and Glazes Chapter 9. Early Types of Glazes Chapter 10. The Oxides and Their Function in Glaze Forming Chapter 11. Glaze Materials Chapter 12. Glaze Calculations, Theory and Objectives Chapter 13. Glaze Calculation Using Materials Containing More Than One Oxide Chapter 14. Calculating Glaze Formulas from Batches or Recipes Chapter 15. Practical Problems in Glaze Calculation Chapter 16. The Composition of Glazes Chapter 17. Types of Glazes Chapter 18. Originating Glaze Formulas Chapter 19. Fritted Glazes Chapter 20. Glaze Textures Chapter 21. Sources of Color in Glazes Chapter 22. Methods of Compounding and Blending Colored Glazes Chapter 23. Glaze Mixing and Application Chapter 24. Firing Glazes Chapter 25. Glaze Flaws Chapter 26. Engobes Chapter 27. Underglaze Colors and Decoration Chapter 28. Overglaze Decoration Chapter 29. Reduction Firing and Reduction Glazes Chapter 30. Special Glazes and Glaze Effects
