Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “We need better approaches to understanding and managing software requirements, and Dean provides them in this book. He draws ideas from three very useful intellectual pools: classical management practices, Agile methods, and lean product development. By combining the strengths of these three approaches, he has produced something that works better than any one in isolation.” –From the Foreword by Don Reinertsen, President of Reinertsen & Associates; author of Managing the Design Factory; and leading expert on rapid product development Effective requirements discovery and analysis is a critical best practice for serious application development. Until now, however, requirements and Agile methods have rarely coexisted peacefully. For many enterprises considering Agile approaches, the absence of effective and scalable Agile requirements processes has been a showstopper for Agile adoption. In Agile Software Requirements, Dean Leffingwell shows exactly how to create effective requirements in Agile environments. Part I presents the “big picture” of Agile requirements in the enterprise, and describes an overall process model for Agile requirements at the project team, program, and portfolio levels Part II describes a simple and lightweight, yet comprehensive model that Agile project teams can use to manage requirements Part III shows how to develop Agile requirements for complex systems that require the cooperation of multiple teams Part IV guides enterprises in developing Agile requirements for ever-larger “systems of systems,” application suites, and product portfolios This book will help you leverage the benefits of Agile without sacrificing the value of effective requirements discovery and analysis. You’ll find proven solutions you can apply right now–whether you’re a software developer or tester, executive, project/program manager, architect, or team leader.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: Many working environments have experienced increased uncertainty due to our fast-moving and unpredictable world. Information technology (IT) projects particularly face several challenges because of their rapidly changing environments and emerging technologies. IT organisations within these contexts adapt project management approaches to address those challenges. Agile, traditional, and hybrid approaches are considered when managing projects. However, agile has gained much attention in recent years due to its effectiveness in addressing issues with traditional ones. There is an increasing demand among organisations to use hybrid agile approaches due to failure rates in IT projects. Recent statistics on the state of agile and other methods in published journals show that more than 50% of organisations tend to use hybrid approaches. Still, there is little knowledge on how organisations combine agile and non-agile approaches. This thesis proposes that a holistic view of hybrid agile implementation is needed to understand what constitutes a hybrid agile approach. The view consists of elements, approaches, frameworks, practices, tools, techniques, success measures, and people factors to understand how organisations use hybrid agile. The view also consists of elements, benefits and challenges to understanding why organisations adopt hybrid agile. The elements answer the research question on how successfully organisations manage IT projects using the hybrid agile approach. A qualitative and interpretative case study design is conducted as the research method. The data collection methods included interviews with agile experts, document analysis, and website analysis, while the primary data analysis technique was thematic analysis. The findings indicate that the studied organisations use predominantly hybrid agile in different combinations of approaches and frameworks. The most common combinations of hybrid agile include scrum framework, in-house built hybrid agile approach and Scaled Agile Framework SAFe framework. The use of scrum ceremonies, artefacts, and application lifecycle management tools appeared to be consistent in hybrid agile. The organisations assessed their success in hybrid agile using internal and external factors, including agile metrics and customer and user satisfaction as the most-used metrics. The findings also show that in developing effective teams in hybrid agile, the focus is on behavioural factors rather than technical factors, where the culture factor, agile mindset factor, and interpersonal factors are the most important people factors in hybrid agile. The findings concerning hybrid agile adoption benefits show that ability to build quickly, having clear requirements, increasing customer and user satisfaction, and ensuring team development and satisfaction are the most perceived benefits of hybrid agile. The findings indicate that the hybrid agile approach is better than pure agile. Hybrid agile is more comprehensive in its adoption since it allows the flexibility of utilising a wide range of approaches and frameworks and consistent use of practices, tools, and techniques. The findings also prove the maturity of hybrid agile because of the consistency of practices used and the adoption of management tools. The benefits indicate that hybrid agile positively impacts several areas within organisations. There are several contributions of our study, including the development of conceptual framework to understand the hybrid agile environment and identify the main elements of impact of the success of hybrid agile. The identification of different combinations of hybrid agile approaches and frameworks is another contribution that can show what constructs hybrid agile. The identified practices, tools, and techniques of hybrid agile are other contributions of our study, as well as the success measures and people factor to assess and determine the success and build effective teams in hybrid agile. The practical contributions of our study include that researchers and practitioners can apply the hybrid agile conceptual framework for analysing how they manage their projects. This can benefit them in better understanding the relations between the used approaches and framework, the used practices, tools, and techniques, how they measure the success, and the people factors' impact on other elements. Therefore, the findings of our study can assist in better exploring the hybrid agile approach and contribute to organisations by improving the chance of success in their IT projects.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Master IBM’s Breakthrough DAD Process Framework for Succeeding with Agile in Large, Complex, Mission-Critical IT Projects It is widely recognized that moving from traditional to agile approaches to build software solutions is a critical source of competitive advantage. Mainstream agile approaches that are indeed suitable for small projects require significant tailoring for larger, complex enterprise projects. In Disciplined Agile Delivery, Scott W. Ambler and Mark Lines introduce IBM’s breakthrough Disciplined Agile Delivery (DAD) process framework, which describes how to do this tailoring. DAD applies a more disciplined approach to agile development by acknowledging and dealing with the realities and complexities of a portfolio of interdependent program initiatives. Ambler and Lines show how to extend Scrum with supplementary agile and lean strategies from Agile Modeling (AM), Extreme Programming (XP), Kanban, Unified Process (UP), and other proven methods to provide a hybrid approach that is adaptable to your organization’s unique needs. They candidly describe what practices work best, why they work, what the trade-offs are, and when to consider alternatives, all within the context of your situation. Disciplined Agile Delivery addresses agile practices across the entire lifecycle, from requirements, architecture, and development to delivery and governance. The authors show how these best-practice techniques fit together in an end-to-end process for successfully delivering large, complex systems--from project initiation through delivery. Coverage includes Scaling agile for mission-critical enterprise endeavors Avoiding mistakes that drive poorly run agile projects to chaos Effectively initiating an agile project Transitioning as an individual to agile Incrementally building consumable solutions Deploying agile solutions into complex production environments Leveraging DevOps, architecture, and other enterprise disciplines Adapting your governance strategy for agile projects Based on facts, research, and extensive experience, this book will be an indispensable resource for every enterprise software leader and practitioner--whether they’re seeking to optimize their existing agile/Scrum process or improve the agility of an iterative process.
