Book excerpt: The primary purpose of this study was to identify and describe the specific beneficial elements of Camp Comfort, an innovative weekend grief support program for children. The sample of children included 29 boys and girls who had lost a member of their family in the past year. The study used an empirically rigorous methodology known as concept mapping. The children participated in a three step research process including brainstorming the benefits of camp, sorting and rating the camp benefits, and completing standardized scales of quality of life, depression and coping. A five cluster model of camp benefits was constructed including Attachment and Connections, Traditional Camp, Acceptance and Expression, Escape from Grief-related Stress at Home, and Kid-Friendly Environment. There were significant changes in the direction of healthy coping on several scales for both the younger and older children. No changes were observed on the measures of depression or quality of life. The implications of the benefits concept map and suggestions for research and practice are considered.

Attending a Therapeutic Recreation camp program allows for individuals with disabilities to be around friends, to meet new friends, to feel a part of a family, to do things they have never done before, to become more independent, to escape from feeling different, and to simply be themselves. This study provides one rationale for leisure professionals providing more Therapeutic Recreation camp programs for the young adults with disabilities population. This study also provides practical implications to developing more programming for young adults with disabilities within the field of Therapeutic Recreation.

Book excerpt: This study examines the utilization of a therapeutic summer camp for children with disabilities as a respite care provider for parents of camp participants. Interviews were conducted with nine parents, from seven different families of recent camp participants at Camp LIFE, a camp for children with disabilities located in Burton, TX. The interviews were qualitative in nature, and utilized Atlas.ti research software to guide the data analysis process. The findings centered on five areas: the daily life of a family with a disabled child, the respite needs of these families, the value of respite care in general, the value of respite as provided by Camp LIFE in particular (both while the child attended camp, as well as after the child returned home), the qualities of Camp LIFE that contributed to respite, and suggestions from parents for improvement of service provision. These findings suggest that, as has been found in previous research, raising a child with a disability is often difficult; however, this study found that none of the parents would opt to alter their situation, given the opportunity. It was also reported by parents that respite care is often hard to obtain (for a variety of reasons), but that it is a much-needed and desired service. In terms of Camp LIFE, the interviews showed that the parents did see the camp as a source of respite care, and that each family "did something" with the time their child was at camp in such a way as to maximize these respite benefits. This study is in agreement with an argument raised by previous research; that overnight therapeutic camps are a much-valued source of rest for many parents, and that without such respite, parents would report much higher levels of stress related to the care of a disabled child. Further research should be conducted which further examines the specific processes that allow parents to feel comfortable with obtaining respite from therapeutic camps, as well as research into ways to provide financial support and assistance to further the ability of these camps to provide such services.

Book excerpt: This research study explored children's grief through a lived grief camp experience. The study followed five out of six female campers of a single death. The camp duration was three days and two nights. Campers were observed, interacted with and given a survey at the end of the grief camp experience focused on uncovering the benefits of the grief camp. The purpose of this study was to examine the camp experience as an added layer of supprt for bereaved children. Lack of education of children's grief styles and processes often create situations in which children are not permitted to grieve in a way natural to them (Worden, 1996). Results of the study strongly suggest the grief camp experience provided an added alyer of support and allowed children to process their grief in a healthy way as well as learn positive coping skills that could be continued beyond the camp experience to promote healthy grieving.

Book excerpt: For many individuals with disabilities, camp offers intentional recreational activities designed to meet specific goals. These camps utilize the Therapeutic Recreation (TR) process that typically includes assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation. While research continues to report the benefits campers experience (see Michalski, et al., 2003), there is a gap as to what elements are responsible. The purpose of this study was to identify the most important elements of TR when applied to residential summer camps for individuals with disabilities. To identify these elements, this study utilized a panel of experts (n=8) through a Classic Delphi approach. These experts, mean of 16 years of experience as Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialists and 12 years at camp, initially identified 29 elements. Subsequent rounds of the Delphi provided ratings and definitions of the elements and explained why they are specifically valuable at camp. Statistical analysis identified nine elements as most important: Planning, Evaluation, Socialization, Implementation, Staff Qualifications & Competency Assessment, Management, Prevention, Safety Planning, and Risk Management, Program Evaluation & Research, Quality Improvement. Identifying key elements is critical in developing a framework for future research as well as justifying TR service and prioritizing which elements should be considered when creating a TR camp program.

The dominant 20th century model holds that the function of grief and mourning is to cut bonds with the deceased, thereby freeing the survivor to reinvest in new relationships in the present. Pathological grief has been defined in terms of holding on to the deceased. Close examination reveals that this model is based more on the cultural values of modernity than on any substantial data of what people actually do. Presenting data from several populations, 22 authors - among the most respected in their fields - demonstrate that the health resolution of grief enables one to maintain a continuing bond with the deceased. Despite cultural disapproval and lack of validation by professionals, survivors find places for the dead in their on-going lives and even in their communities. Such bonds are not denial: the deceased can provide resources for enriched functioning in the present. Chapters examine widows and widowers, bereaved children, parents and siblings, and a population previously excluded from bereavement research: adoptees and their birth parents. Bereavement in Japanese culture is also discussed, as are meanings and implications of this new model of grief. Opening new areas of research and scholarly dialogue, this work provides the basis for significant developments in clinical practice in the field.
