They are often filled with additives that improve their processability and mechanical or electrical properties. An understanding of the polymer-filler interaction and the ramifications for the properties of filled polymer blends is a matter of significant practical interest. Phase separation plays an important role in determining the morphology and properties of filled polymer composites, which usually are a blend of various macromolecular fluids, and additive particles. Despite the wide application of these blends, the development and the stability of the phase separating morphology are not fully understood. In particular, the interference of the filler induced composition waves remains unexplored. The presence of a surface induces a composition wave, which consists of stripes parallel to the surface and only exists close to the surface. The morphologies in the bulk take form of the characteristic spinodal decomposition patterns, i.e. the convoluted stripes. This surface directed phase separation has been studied both theoretically and experimentally. Recent numerical results show that an immobile spherical filler particle introduces transient target patterns in two-dimensional polymer thin films, and experimental results have confirmed the observations. The authors report simulation results of the effect of filler geometry on phase separation morphology, focusing on the interference of the composition waves on the stability of two-dimensional polymer blends (polymer thin films).

Book excerpt: A classical metastable state possesses a local free energy minimum at infinite sizes, but not a global one. This concept is phase size independent. We have studied a number of experimental results and proposed a new concept that there exists a wide range of metastable states in polymers on different length scales where their metastability is critically determined by the phase size and dimensionality. Metastable states are also observed in phase transformations that are kinetically impeded on the pathway to thermodynamic equilibrium. This was illustrated in structural and morphological investigations of crystallization and mesophase transitions, liquid-liquid phase separation, vitrification and gel formation, as well as combinations of these transformation processes. The phase behaviours in polymers are thus dominated by interlinks of metastable states on different length scales. This concept successfully explains many experimental observations and provides a new way to connect different aspects of polymer physics.* Written by a leading scholar and industry expert* Presents new and cutting edge material encouraging innovation and future research* Connects hot topics and leading research in one concise volume

Book excerpt: Low shear-rate viscosity measurements of a fluid in a closed system tend to exclude the standard viscometers because of the difficulty involved in isolating the moving components of such instruments from the sample chamber. Yet, there is a need to develop instruments which permit isolation of the sample chamber especially when the fluid of interest is carcinogenic and/or susceptible to interaction with the external environment. Phase separation of polymer blends an interesting topic for researchers to study extensively theoretically and experimentally for many decades. Polymer phase separation has a morphology of dot, line or bi-continuous shape. Application of this phase separation morphology is used for many potential applications such as photovoltaic devices, light-emitting diodes, antireflection coatings and biological devices. Moreover, a new phase-change material might be found to have the best germanium, antimony and tellurium (Ge-Sb-Te) alloy. The goal was to find the best contrast between the crystalline and amorphous states and they are used for electronic device memory either DRAM or Flash chips finally. For polymer solutions, many approaches and techniques have been used to determine the coexistence curve including the lower critical solution temperature (LCST) and the upper critical solution temperature (UCST). A modified centrifugal apparatus for measuring the coexistence curves of a polymer solution: polystyrene solution in methyl cyclohexane is reported for the first time in research laboratory.

Book excerpt: In this work, we propose a model for describing the dynamics in polymer blends or polymer-solvent blends close to and below Tg. The model is solved on a 2D lattice corresponding to spatial scales from 10 nm up to a few micrometers and incorporate the heterogeneous nature of the dynamics at the scale of a dynamic heterogeneity (3-5 nm). In case of polymer blends, we apply this model to study phase separation close to and below Tg upon cooling, and rejuvenation in miscible range upon heating. In the course of phase separation, we observe slow structures forming in coexistence with faster ones. In the same time, the global dynamics of the system slows down and domains grow like the logarithm of the time. During rejuvenation, we observe that morphologies melt much faster the elapsed time required to build them during aging. In the case of polymer-solvent blends, the system is put in contact with a solvent reservoir and is at temperatures far below the pure polymer glass transition. We consider situations where the activity of the solvent reservoir is varied in order to describe either films drying or swelling. Our model allows for explaining case-II diffusion in the context of the plasticisation of a glassy polymer by penetrating solvent during swelling. Regarding the process of film drying, we show that films up to 1 micrometer thick can be completely dried. When drying a thicker film, we show that a glassy crust may appear on the free surface, as shown experimentally.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Phase separation in complex fluids such as polymers has been the subject of several experimental and theoretical studies in recent years. Understanding the phase separation mechanisms and controlling morphological evolution are very important for designing various advanced materials with novel mechanical, optical, electrical, and transport properties. In polymer blends, dynamic asymmetry is induced by a large difference in glass transition temperature. In this work, phase separation behavior of ternary blends of polystyrene/poly(vinyl methyl ether)/polyisoprene, PS/PVME/PI, and polystyrene/poly(vinyl methyl ether)/poly(ethyl methacrylate), PS/PVME/PEMA are investigated. Ternary blends of PS/PVME/PI and PS/PVME/PEMA exhibit complex phase separation behavior since PS and PVME have a lower critical solution temperature (LCST) behavior, while PI and PS (or PVME), PEMA and PS (or PVME) have upper critical solution temperature (UCST) behavior. 2D and 3D phase diagrams for these two ternary systems were plotted by both Flory-Huggins incompressible and regular solution compressible models. Casting the solutions of PS/PVME/PI and PS/PVME/PEMA blends form two phase-separated domains in most compositions: (i) PI-rich or PEMA rich, and (ii) PS/PVME-rich. Post-annealing of such samples leads to the second-stage phase separation due to unfavorable interaction of PS and PVME at temperatures about 100°C. Such behavior that is observed for the first time provides a new potential method for making different morphologies with the same system by changing annealing parameters and composition. Washing one polymer at a time using a selective solvent is used to study the morphology of ternary blends. Optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy are used to study the kinetics and morphology of viscoelastic phase separation (VPS) in ternary blends.

Book excerpt: In this work, a new approach based on the scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) technique was developed to study the morphology of the phases in immiscible polymer blends. The mild operating conditions of the STM allow one to image samples that decompose under electron beam in the electron microscope. Blends of PMMA/poly(Stx-'co'-MMA) with different compositions of copolymer in the blend ([straight phi]), and styrene in the copolymer (x), were studied. Microtomed surfaces of the samples were made conductive by gold coating. The resolution of the STM technique in this approach is limited to the size of the gold grains (20 nm). Good STM images were obtained for all of the opaque samples, some of which were impossible to image with the electron microscope. Samples with x = 0.8 showed cocontinuous morphology for 0.3 [straight phi]
