Book excerpt: Progress has been made in advancing the state of the art in multiple-scale modeling of damage in composite materials, as delineated below. Interfacial Debonding Analysis in Multiple Fiber Reinforced Composites: Decohesion at multiple fiber interfaces of elastic fiber reinforced composites is modeled by the Voronoi cell finite element model (VCFEM). Interfacial debonding is accommodated by cohesive zone models and simulations are compared with results from experiments, performed using cruciform specimens of fiber polymer-matrix composites. A Multi-level Computational Model for Multi-scale Damage Analysis in Composite and Porous Materials: An adaptive multi-level methodology is developed to create a hierarchy of computational sub-domains with varying resolution for multiple scale problems. It concurrently predicts variables at the structural and microstructural scales and tracks microstructural damage. VCFEM conducts microstructural analysis, while a displacement based FEM code executes the macroscopic analysis. The adaptive process increases efficiency and accuracy. Experimental-Computationai Investigation Of Damage Evolution In Discontinuously Reinforced Composite: A combined experimental-computational approach to study the evolution of microscopic damage to cause failure in commercial SiC particle reinforced DRA's. Aspects of microstructural geometry that are most critical for damage nucleation and evolution are accomplished. Micromechanical modeling of 2D micrographs are conducted with VCFEM. Inferences on the initiation and propagation of damage are made from the 2D simulations.

Book excerpt: This work has developed an adaptive concurrent multi-level computational model for multi-scale analysis of composite structures undergoing damage initiation and growth due to microstructural damage induced by debonding at the fiber-matrix interface. The model combines macroscopic computations using a continuum damage model with explicit micromechanical computations of stresses and strain, including explicit debonding at the fiber-matrix interface. Three hierarchical levels of different resolution adaptively evolve in this to improve the accuracy of solutions by reducing modeling and discretization errors. The levels include: (1) level-0 of pure macroscopic analysis using a continuum damage mechanics (CDM) model; (2) level-1 of asymptotic homogenization based macroscopic-microscopic RVE modeling to monitor the breakdown of continuum laws and signal the need for microscopic analyses; and (3) level-2 regions of pure micromechanical modeling with explicit depiction of the local microstructure. The macroscopic computations are done by conventional FEM models. For micromechanical analysis, the Voronoi cell finite element model(VCFEM) has been improved for studying the interfacial debonding. A new eXtended Voronoi cell finite element model (X-VCFEM) has been developed for modeling interfacial debonding with arbitrary matrix cohesive cracking in fiber-reinforced composites. The cracks are modeled by a cohesive zone model and their incremental directions and growth lengths are determined in terms of the cohesive energy near the crack tip. The power of this method is established through numerical examples.

Book excerpt: The reliable use of fiber reinforced composites (FRCs) in engineering applications depends, among other factors, on the quality of predictions related to their evolving damage state, which further affect design, operation and maintenance conditions. In this context, although a wealth of mechanical behavior, characterization, and failure data and information are available, it is still challenging to understand and predict the failure process in such materials. The main reasons for this deficiency are two. First, the failure processes in FRCs are fairly complex and highly variable given the available manufacturing, processing and usage parameters, which result in unique challenges when monitoring and simulating their performance. Second, despite the several modeling approaches developed using e.g. the Finite Element Analysis (FEA) method, it remains challenging to extend the use of such models across time and lengths scales. This dissertation targets the development of a data-driven modeling approach that is based on a key difference with respect to the previously reported methods on composite damage modeling. Specifically, instead of merely using a number of inputs for material and failure properties based on literature or some experiments, the presented approach targets to create computational workflows that enable the use of nondestructive evaluation data, collected at several scales to generate progressive failure inputs to FEA models, which are first calibrated for their predictions at the material scale and then use similar data to tune aspects of damage initiation and evolution at the structural scale. To demonstrate this approach, a particular class of FRCs is used and a number of analytical and numerical tools are developed or adapted to achieve this type of data-driven FEA modeling. The overall research output, demonstrates that such computational workflows are now possible to provide insights into progressive failure analysis of composite materials, which could impact all phases of design, manufacturing and use of them in applications.

Book excerpt: The course deals with the crucial central question: how can one predict the evolution of damage up to and including final fracture ?Emerging yet mature answers will be presented. First, a description of today's common approaches in industrial environments will be given, along with their limits regarding the design and calculation of stratified composite structures. The course also emphasizes the damage mesomodel initiated at LMT-Cachan and used today in a number of calculation codes. This advanced yet pragmatic tool for the prediction of damage in stratified materials has become mature thanks particularly to the works of LMT-Cachan on its relation to micromechanics, EADS-Innovation Works on its identification, and DLR on its application to impact and crash problems. The course aims to give engineers and researchers the most complete view possible of the state-of-the-art and emerging techniques in damage prediction and failure analysis of laminated composite structures.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Understanding damage and failure of composite materials is critical for reliable and cost-effective engineering design. Bringing together materials mechanics and modeling, this book provides a complete guide to damage, fatigue and failure of composite materials. Early chapters focus on the underlying principles governing composite damage, reviewing basic equations and mechanics theory, before describing mechanisms of damage such as cracking, breakage and buckling. In subsequent chapters, the physical mechanisms underlying the formation and progression of damage under mechanical loads are described with ample experimental data, and micro- and macro-level damage models are combined. Finally, fatigue of composite materials is discussed using fatigue-life diagrams. While there is a special emphasis on polymer matrix composites, metal and ceramic matrix composites are also described. Outlining methods for more reliable design of composite structures, this is a valuable resource for engineers and materials scientists in industry and academia.

Book excerpt: In contrast to metals, a composite material acquires an internal structure where the imprint of its manufacturing process history is a significant part of the internal structure’s makeup and in many cases determines how the material responds to external impulses. The performance for which a composite material is designed must therefore be assessed with due consideration to the manufacturing-induced features in the material volume. Failure theories based on homogenized composites cannot deliver reliable methodologies for performance assessment. This book details approaches that depart from traditional treatments by accounting for manufacturing defects in composite materials. It discusses how manufacturing defects are produced and how they affect the performance of composite materials. Serves as the only book to bring knowledge on manufacturing and failure modeling together in a coherent manner. Guides readers on mechanisms-based modeling with a focus on defects. Treats statistical simulation of microstructure with defects aimed at physical modeling. Covers manufacturing methods for polymer matrix composites. Describes failure modes in unidirectional composites and laminates in the presence of defects. Discusses fatigue damage in the presence of defects. This book is aimed at researchers in industry and academia in aerospace engineering, mechanical engineering, and materials science and engineering. It also serves as a reference for students taking advanced courses in composite materials.
