Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Emissions of gases and particulate matter by military aircraft were characterized inplume by 'extractive' and 'optical remote-sensing (ORS)' technologies. Non-volatile particle size distribution, number and mass concentrations were measured with good precision and reproducibly. Time-integrated particulate filter samples were collected and analyzed for smoke number, elemental composition, carbon contents, and sulfate. Observed at EEP the geometric mean diameter (as measured by the mobility diameter) generally increased as the engine power setting increased, which is consistent with downstream observations. The modal diameters at the downstream locations are larger than that at EEP at the same engine power level. The results indicate that engine particles were processed by condensation, for example, leading to particle growth in-plume. Elemental analysis indicated little metals were present in the exhaust, while most of the exhaust materials in the particulate phase were carbon and sulfate (in the JP-8 fuel). CO, CO2, NO, NO2, SO2, HCHO, ethylene, acetylene, propylene, and alkanes were measured. The last five species were most noticeable under engine idle condition. The levels of hydrocarbons emitted at high engine power level were generally below the detection limits. ORS techniques yielded real-time gaseous measurement, but the same techniques could not be extended directly to ultrafine particles found in all engine exhausts. The results validated sampling methodology and measurement techniques used for non-volatile particulate aircraft emissions, which also highlighted the needs for further research on sampling and measurement for volatile particulate matter and semi-volatile species in the engine exhaust especially at the low engine power setting.
Book Synopsis Assessment of Pollutant Measurement and Control Goals for Military Aircarft Engines by : William S. Blazowski
Download or read book Assessment of Pollutant Measurement and Control Goals for Military Aircarft Engines written by William S. Blazowski and published by . This book was released on 1972 with total page 71 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The problem of mass emisssions from aircraft gas turbine engines is briefly reviewed and the aspects of this problem which are unique to military aircraft operation are discussed. Pollutant measurement technology and the existing data base are summarized and candidate control techniques are identified. Proposed Environmental Protection Agency regulations for aircraft engine emissions are examined in terms of their impact on and application to military engines. It is concluded that the special considerations, both performance and otherwise, which must be afforded to military aircraft prohibit direct application of the EPA regulations. The report concerns Air Force emission limitation goals established in light of these efforts. Maximum allowable idle combustion inefficiency, oxide of nitrogen emission (1bm/1000 lbm fuel), and smoke number are specified. The rationale behind using these parameters, and the means by which the numerical goals were derived are discussed. (Author).
Book Synopsis Condensation Particle Counting Technology and Its Applications by : Longfei Chen
Download or read book Condensation Particle Counting Technology and Its Applications written by Longfei Chen and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2024-09-20 with total page 171 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Condensation Particle Counting Technology and Its Applications introduces the principles, key components, calibration methods, and applications of condensation particle counting systems. This book delves into the adverse effects of fine particles on human health, along with the existing detection technologies for these particles. It discusses the theories and methods of optical measurement for fine particles and elaborates on the applicable conditions for each light scattering theory, providing a theoretical foundation for detecting particle-scattered light. This book concludes with an overview of the challenges posed by ongoing climate change and future research prospects in condensation particle counting (CPC). This book is intended for industry professionals and environmental researchers specializing in particle and aerosol measurement, detection methods, and technology.

Download or read book PT6A-68 Emissions Measurement Program Summary written by and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Report is the product of a five year emissions testing program designed to document, characterize, and evaluate emissions from aircraft engines, auxiliary power units (APU's) burning JP-8. The purpose of the emissions testing program was to develop emission factors for the tested engines under representative load conditions. This addendum is for the PT6A-68 aircraft engine test program. Testing was performed by Environmental Quality Management, Inc. (EQM). Testing was conducted for criteria and hazardous air pollutants.

Book Synopsis Gas Turbine Engine Smoke Measurement Cross Correlation by :
Download or read book Gas Turbine Engine Smoke Measurement Cross Correlation written by and published by . This book was released on 1983 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An extensive air sampling program was undertaken to measure the particulate emissions from various gas turbine (jet) engines used in military aircraft. This joint Navy, Air Force project was directed and accomplished by the Navy Aircraft Environmental Support Office (AESO) at NAVAIREWORKFAC North Island. The project was accomplished per MIPR S-80-21. The objectives of the study were: First, measure smoke mass emissions at the engine exhaust plane and correlate the results with measured smoke numbers. Second, compare the smoke mass emission measured simultaneously by two different direct mass measurement procedures. A third objective was to measure the particle size distribution of the jet engine exhaust aerosol. Descriptions of the sampling methods used in this project are given in the next section. The aim of the project was to correlate the results obtained using several different particulate emission sampling methods on various military jet engines and determine if other indirect measurement methods can be used to adequately determine particulate emissions. A variety of engine types were tested including: J79-GE-8C/D, J79-GE-10B, F404-GE- 400, TF30-P-414, and J52-P-6B engines. The bulk of the testing and analysis was centered around three engine types: J79-GE-8C/D, J79-GE-10B, and F404-GE-400, due to their availability and widespread use by the Navy.
