Book excerpt: "While the present population of the Village of Maryville is estimated to be about 1,500, population projections range as high as 20,000 by the year 1990. Massive urban development is anticipated in the area due to a number of factors: (a) the village is located between two interstate highways which intersect to the northeast, (b) the village is located atop the bluffs in relatively good soil and is therefore prime land for development, (c) in relation to other regional development factors such as the Edwardsville Campus of Southern Illinois University, the proposed second metropolitan airport, the Tri-City port development, and the growth of adjacent communities such as Edwardsville and Collinsville, the Village of Maryville is strategically located to benefit from these regional developments. This report points out that the chara[c]ter and extent of urban development in the Maryville area is dependent in large part upon the village's capacity to extend utilities and essential services to its contiguous area. It is strongly recommended that village officials utilize zoning and subdivision regulations, as well as utility extension and annexation agreements, in order to structure and control the growth which is going to occur during the next 20 years. A six-year capital improvement program is included in the report as a suggestion for the most efficient use of the village's limited bonding capacity."--Preliminary page.

Book Synopsis Community Planning by : Stephanie B. Kelly
Download or read book Community Planning written by Stephanie B. Kelly and published by Rowman & Littlefield Publishers. This book was released on 2004-10-17 with total page 237 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Community Planning: How to Solve Urban and Environmental Problems covers the basic theoretical principles of community planning and how planning has evolved in the United States. The book defines the interdisciplinary nature of the field, identifies the forces that shape the planning process, and explains the sub-specialized areas of community planning. Throughout the text, the author draws connections between the theoretical principles of planning and their practical applications, leading to an emphasis on the essential skill that links theory to implementation and practice— problem solving. After reading each chapter and corresponding exercises, students learn to link the theoretical concepts with real world planning problems on their campus, downtown, and hometowns. Several major themes run throughout the text. First, understanding the theoretical principles of community planning leads to effective practical applications in problem solving. Second, using the problem-oriented approach is an effective way of dealing with the immediate situations that confront community planners, and lastly, planners are confronted with their political implications, therefore discussions about the role of federal, state, and local regulations on planning practice are woven into the text. Community Planning: How to Solve Urban and Environmental Problems provides students with an understanding of the events that shape community planning, the particular forces that impact the planning process, and the knowledge that is needed to link content areas together to solve planning problems. The book is suitable for students in regional, environmental, city, and community planning courses, as well as for students in related fields including geography, sociology, criminal justice, public administration, and economics. The content and problem solving techniques are valuable for all students in order to participate in community service activities in the future, and the practical aspects of the text make it suitable as a reference for professional planners and local planning board members as well.

Book Synopsis Building Community Capacity by : Robert J. Chaskin
Download or read book Building Community Capacity written by Robert J. Chaskin and published by Transaction Publishers. This book was released on with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on a gap in current social work practice theory: community change. Much work in this area of macro practice, particularly around "grassroots" community organizing, has a somewhat dated feel to it, is highly ideological in orientation, or suffers from superficiality, particularly in the area of theory and practical application. Set against the context of an often narrowly constructed "clinical" emphasis on practice education, coupled with social work's own current rendering of "scientific management," community practice often takes second or third billing in many professional curricula despite its deep roots in the overall field of social welfare. Drawing on extensive case study data from three significant community-building initiatives, program data from numerous other community capacity-building efforts, key informant interviews, and an excellent literature review, Chaskin and his colleagues draw implications for crafting community change strategies as well as for creating and sustaining the organizational infrastructure necessary to support them. The authors bring to bear the perspectives of a variety of professional disciplines including sociology, urban planning, psychology, and social work. Building Community Capacity takes a collaborative, interdisciplinary approach to a subject of wide and current concern: the role of neighborhood and community structures in the delivery of human services or, as the authors put it, "a place where programs and problems can be fitted together." Social work scholars and students of community practice seeking new conceptual frameworks and insights from research to inform novel community interventions will find much of value in Building Community Capacity.
